DESCRIPTION:Before our gates open to the general public\, birding expert Rob Jett leads these peaceful early morning walking tours to discover the many birds that call Green-Wood home. \n\n\n\nJust because it’s winter\, doesn’t mean that there aren’t interesting birds to discover in Green-Wood. DESCRIPTION:Green-Wood’s artist in residence Adam Tendler invites you to contribute to his upcoming installation Exit Strategy (opening June 2024). Exit Strategy is a site specific installation in Green-Wood’s Fort Hamilton Gatehouse that interrogates the complex relationship between grief and personal identity\, creating an immersive environment that meditates on how we attach ourselves to memories and physical objects\, and the possibilities for letting them go. We’ll discover thousands of songbirds resting before their trip farther north as well as arriving herons and egrets at Green-Wood’s glacial ponds. \n\n\n\nPeak Spring Migration (May to mid-June) \n\n\n\nFrom ruby-throated hummingbirds to over twenty species of colorful wood warblers\, our peak migration tours will feature many of the 163 bird species that have been recorded at Green-Wood during the month of May. Beginning just after sunrise\, we will experience spring’s dawn chorus at the most active time of day for birds. \n\n\n\nSummer Birding (Late June to August) \n\n\n\nIn July we should see the offspring of our resident red-tailed hawk bravely preparing to leave the nest. Warbler songs will be replaced by chirring cicadas and the tweets of fledgling birds. Butterflies and dragonflies are abundant. Should maximum capacity be reached\, we will need to limit access to both areas including any associated activities and artist activations. Scroll down for further details. \n\n\n\nOn April 8\, 2024 join us to slow down\, look up\, and celebrate our solar system at a rare astronomical occurrence. This will be the last total solar eclipse (when the Moon occults the Sun from our vantage point on Earth) that is visible from the contiguous United States until 2044! New York City will observe 90 percent totality and\, weather permitting\, we’ll get to view this cosmic event together.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: Free.  \n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\nIn-Person Event(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\nWe’ll gather in Green-Wood’s Meadow and at the Historic Chapel\, where you can enjoy the celestial spectacle through special-edition glasses and telescopes equipped with solar filters. Enhancing the experience\, amateur astronomers will be on hand to operate telescopes and answer questions relating to the eclipse. The celebration will include a diverse array of activities: self-guided explorations and artist-led activations\, including an intimate soil soundscape installation\, a community mural with the Red Hook Art Project\, a listening session pop-up with Sacred Bones Records\, and a gong sound bath by Samer Ghadry alongside NASA’s livestream of the eclipse from the path of totality. \n\n\n\nFood and soft drinks available for purchase. Vendors include Julian Cavin and La Newyorkina. Drinks bar by Green-Wood (cash and credit card accepted). Enjoy vendor offerings or bring your own snacks. Note: This is an alcohol-free event for a family-friendly atmosphere. \n\n\n\nPresented by Pioneer Works\, Green-Wood\, and the Amateur Astronomers Association. We’ll discover thousands of songbirds resting before their trip farther north as well as arriving herons and egrets at Green-Wood’s glacial ponds. \n\n\n\nPeak Spring Migration (May to mid-June) \n\n\n\nFrom ruby-throated hummingbirds to over twenty species of colorful wood warblers\, our peak migration tours will feature many of the 163 bird species that have been recorded at Green-Wood during the month of May. Beginning just after sunrise\, we will experience spring’s dawn chorus at the most active time of day for birds. \n\n\n\nSummer Birding (Late June to August) \n\n\n\nIn July we should see the offspring of our resident red-tailed hawk bravely preparing to leave the nest. Warbler songs will be replaced by chirring cicadas and the tweets of fledgling birds. Butterflies and dragonflies are abundant. We’ll start with a quiet hour of reading alone together—bring your own book on these topics or borrow one from our library—followed by the opportunity for discussion. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: Free. Registration required.  \n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn-Person Event(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Silent Book Club of Death was born from Silent Book Club (SBC)\, a global community of readers and introverts\, with more than 500 chapters in 50 countries around the world. SBC members gather in public at bars\, cafes\, bookstores\, and libraries\, as well as online to read together in quiet camaraderie. Silent Book Club of Death’s  New York chapter is facilitated by Lauren Seeley\,  who is a death doula and illustrator\, and serves as a logistics specialist at Compassionate Care Pet Aquamation.  \n\n\n\nFree. Registration required.
