Otake is interested in communing with and surveying the physical and emotional traces of the deceased. \n\n\n\nIn Mother\, through videos and sculpture\, Otake talks to and dances with her mother\, who died in 2019. It is one daughter and her mother’s personal story. The artist\, however\, hopes viewers have an opportunity to contemplate their own maternal bonds\, as well as the diverse yet common connection to a mother that “links us all to the distant past.” Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel is a poignant setting for Mother\, as for over a century it has provided many with a place for such reflection.  \n\n\n\nMother is curated by Harry Weil\, Green-Wood’s Vice President of Education and Public Programs. Iris McCloughan aided in the installation’s creation as a dramaturg. Mother includes two videos created in 2019 soon after Otake’s mother passed away\, as well as photo prints and objects. The video of the artist speaking is excerpted from “Elegies\,” made in collaboration with John Killacky and Brian Stevenson. Green-Wood’s official birding checklist will be made available to all attendees\, or you can print it in advance here. \n\n\n\nAnd depending when you stop by\, you may see a variety of different species passing through: \n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: $20\, and $15 for members \n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWalking Tour(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\nEarly Spring Migration (April) \n\n\n\nOur April tours will be a feast for the ears and eyes with the trilling song of pine warblers and drumming pronouncements of woodpeckers on newly blossoming trees (including magnolias\, maples\, quinces\, and dogwoods). We’ll discover thousands of songbirds resting before their trip farther north as well as arriving herons and egrets at Green-Wood’s glacial ponds. \n\n\n\nPeak Spring Migration (May to mid-June) \n\n\n\nFrom ruby-throated hummingbirds to over twenty species of colorful wood warblers\, our peak migration tours will feature many of the 163 bird species that have been recorded at Green-Wood during the month of May. Beginning just after sunrise\, we will experience spring’s dawn chorus at the most active time of day for birds. \n\n\n\nSummer Birding (Late June to August) \n\n\n\nIn July we should see the offspring of our resident red-tailed hawk bravely preparing to leave the nest. Warbler songs will be replaced by chirring cicadas and the tweets of fledgling birds. Butterflies and dragonflies are abundant. We’ll discover thousands of songbirds resting before their trip farther north as well as arriving herons and egrets at Green-Wood’s glacial ponds. \n\n\n\nPeak Spring Migration (May to mid-June) \n\n\n\nFrom ruby-throated hummingbirds to over twenty species of colorful wood warblers\, our peak migration tours will feature many of the 163 bird species that have been recorded at Green-Wood during the month of May. Beginning just after sunrise\, we will experience spring’s dawn chorus at the most active time of day for birds. \n\n\n\nSummer Birding (Late June to August) \n\n\n\nIn July we should see the offspring of our resident red-tailed hawk bravely preparing to leave the nest. Warbler songs will be replaced by chirring cicadas and the tweets of fledgling birds. Butterflies and dragonflies are abundant. DESCRIPTION:AN Installation by Eiko Otake\n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto Credit: Maria Baranova\n\n\n\nFebruary 25th–May 7thFree and Open to the Public Daily 10am–5pmHistoric Chapel \n\n\n\nIn her fifty-year career\, Eiko Otake has explored themes of loss\, which has included practicing her own death\, conversing with the dead\, and moving among the abandoned remains of irradiated Fukushima. Otake is interested in communing with and surveying the physical and emotional traces of the deceased. \n\n\n\nIn Mother\, through videos and sculpture\, Otake talks to and dances with her mother\, who died in 2019. It is one daughter and her mother’s personal story. The artist\, however\, hopes viewers have an opportunity to contemplate their own maternal bonds\, as well as the diverse yet common connection to a mother that “links us all to the distant past.” Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel is a poignant setting for Mother\, as for over a century it has provided many with a place for such reflection.  \n\n\n\nMother is curated by Harry Weil\, Green-Wood’s Vice President of Education and Public Programs. Iris McCloughan aided in the installation’s creation as a dramaturg. Mother includes two videos created in 2019 soon after Otake’s mother passed away\, as well as photo prints and objects. The video of the artist speaking is excerpted from “Elegies\,” made in collaboration with John Killacky and Brian Stevenson. Green-Wood’s official birding checklist will be made available to all attendees\, or you can print it in advance here. \n\n\n\nAnd depending when you stop by\, you may see a variety of different species passing through: \n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: $20\, and $15 for members \n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWalking Tour(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\nEarly Spring Migration (April) \n\n\n\nOur April tours will be a feast for the ears and eyes with the trilling song of pine warblers and drumming pronouncements of woodpeckers on newly blossoming trees (including magnolias\, maples\, quinces\, and dogwoods). We’ll discover thousands of songbirds resting before their trip farther north as well as arriving herons and egrets at Green-Wood’s glacial ponds. \n\n\n\nPeak Spring Migration (May to mid-June) \n\n\n\nFrom ruby-throated hummingbirds to over twenty species of colorful wood warblers\, our peak migration tours will feature many of the 163 bird species that have been recorded at Green-Wood during the month of May. Beginning just after sunrise\, we will experience spring’s dawn chorus at the most active time of day for birds. \n\n\n\nSummer Birding (Late June to August) \n\n\n\nIn July we should see the offspring of our resident red-tailed hawk bravely preparing to leave the nest. Warbler songs will be replaced by chirring cicadas and the tweets of fledgling birds. Butterflies and dragonflies are abundant. By late-July\, expect the arrival of the first southbound migrants. \n\n\n\nBefore Purchasing A Ticket\, Please Note:\n\n\n\n\nCOVID-19 Policy: In accordance with New York State and CDC guidance\, masks are optional. Attendees must follow ALL instructions and guidance from Cemetery staff and ambassadors.\n\n\n\nTickets: There are no paper or e-tickets! Attendees will be checked in by name.\n\n\n\nWhere To Go: Check-in takes place at the meadow near the Main Entrance at Fifth Avenue and 25th Street (500 25th Street).\n\n\n\nFor Your Safety: We strongly encourage attendees to wear suitable footwear.The route includes several steep hills\, some stairs\, as well as grassy and uneven terrain. There is no place to sit down during the tour. Due to the challenging nature of the route\, this tour is not ADA accessible and is not recommended for children under the age of 10.DA accessible and is not recommended for children under the age of 10.\n\n\n\nA Little More About Safety: Unless it is a medical emergency\, it is not possible to leave during the tour. Please consider your own abilities–as well as those in your party–before purchasing tickets.\n\n\n\nRefunds and exchanges: Ticket sales are final. No exchanges or refunds unless the tour is canceled.\n\n\n\nInclement Weather Policy: We monitor the weather throughout the day for the best chance of proceeding with the tour\, and will not make a final decision until at least 3 hours before the start of the tour.
