SUMMARY:(Sold Out) Love Immemorial
DESCRIPTION:Credit: Nancy Rosin\n \nThis event is sold out. Make sure you never miss out on tickets again! Green-Wood members get access to tickets weeks before the general public. Join today. \nJoin Nancy Rosin\, President of the National Valentine Collectors Association\, for this time-traveling presentation on valentines and other items that serve as expressions of love. In today’s world\, valentines are generally relegated to children’s classrooms\, but in the Victorian era (and before) there was a real need to give and receive tokens of love. Life was often shorter\, distances longer\, and sometimes friends\, family\, and lovers said goodbye without knowing if they’d ever communicate again. Objects of affection – be they romantic cards\, hand-carved coins\, locks of hair\, or more – were touchstones for those left behind. Those traditions continued in death and mourning\, and in many ways influenced the way we celebrate our modern Valentine’s Day. \nIn Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel\, Rosin will discuss the history of this time-honored tradition\, and display many pieces from her impressive collection of historic items. After the talk\, a trolley tour through Green-Wood (including toasty beverages!) will feature expressions of love rendered in stone\, on the monuments and memorials of many permanent residents. \n$20 for members of Green-Wood and BHS / $25 for non-members. Seating is limited\, and reservations are recommended. \nGreen-Wood trolley tours are fully accessible and ADA compliant. \nClick here for our inclement weather policy.

SUMMARY:1 p.m. Black History Month
DESCRIPTION:In honor of Black History Month\, Green-Wood presents this celebration and recognition of the unique stories of black lives in Green-Wood. Though segregation has certainly been an issue in the city\, Brooklyn and New York also have long histories of diversity\, progress\, and activism. This trolley tour\, led by Green-Wood Historian Jeff Richman\, will examine the life and accomplishments of many prominent black New Yorkers\, as well as several abolitionists working for freedom in America. \nYou’ll visit the monuments of Susan Smith McKinney Steward\, the first black female doctor in the state; Jean-Michel Basquiat\, innovative artist of the 1970s and ’80s; Jeremiah Hamilton\, New York’s first black millionaire; civil war heroes and survivors; freed slaves working as abolitionists\, and more. Their stories illustrate the long struggle towards equality and the deep impact black New Yorkers have been making on New York City culture since its inception. \n$15 for members of Green-Wood and BHS/$20 for nonmembers. \nGreen-Wood trolley tours are fully accessible and ADA compliant. SUMMARY:Washington’s Immortals
DESCRIPTION: \nIn August 1776\, the American Revolution was on the verge of a disastrous end. General Washington found his troops outmanned and outmaneuvered at the Battle of Brooklyn\, fought on land now part of Green-Wood. But thanks to a single heroic regiment\, known as the “Immortal 400\,” Washington was able to evacuate his men and they lived to fight another day. \nPatrick O’Donnell\, bestselling military historian\, tells this story in his new book\, Washington’s Immortals. In Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel O’Donnell will discuss the 1st Maryland Regiment\, whose actions in many key battles changed the course of history. Using primary sources including letters\, diaries\, and pension applications\, O’Donnell pieces together the stories of these brave men and\, in the process\, the larger story of the revolution. Books will be available for purchasing and signing. \nThis event has two parts\, with separate tickets for each part: \n\nThe free talk in the historic Green-Wood chapel.\nA guided trolley tour immediately following the talk\, which will feature related stops\, including the hallowed ground on which the Battle of Brooklyn was fought. SUMMARY:Our Streets\, Our Stories: Community Scanning Event
DESCRIPTION:We’re teaming up with Brooklyn Public Library to share your Brooklyn memories with the world! SUMMARY:(Sold Out) Cremation: History and the Modern Process
DESCRIPTION:Courtesy of PBDW Architects. Photographer Jonathan Wallen.\nThis event is sold out. Make sure you never miss out on tickets again! Green-Wood members get access to tickets weeks before the general public. Join today. \nWhat is cremation? How long have we been doing it\, and how does it work? Is it the right choice for you or your family? Amy Cunningham leads this tour of cremation’s history and its impact on the present and future of funerals. You’ll learn about the earliest known cremation in Australia 32 thousand years ago\, the pagan cremations in ancient Rome\, and how Judaism’s consistent objection to cremation led to 1\,500 years of Christian burial. Mark Twain\, Walt Whitman\, Madame Helena Blavatsky\, Jessica Mitford\, Ann Landers and Reverend Billy Graham will all make appearances in this engaging\, sometimes jolly talk. You’ll also learn how to choose an end-of-life mode of disposition that expresses your own beliefs and values. After the talk\, you will tour Green-Wood’s crematory with a member of the crematory staff\, and enjoy the chance for discussions and questions at a short reception. \nAmy Cunningham is a Brooklyn-based funeral director and death educator with a passion for helping families arrange dignified\, distinctive funeral and memorial services. A former journalist\, Amy was recently named one of nine top funeral innovators and specializes in making funerals sustainable and affordable. \nClick here for our inclement weather policy.

SUMMARY:Common Shade: A Discussion with Anna Sale of WNYC's Death\, Sex\, and Money
DESCRIPTION:Credit: Steven Acres\n \nOn her podcast Death\, Sex & Money\, Anna Sale talks with writers\, actors\, adventurers – and everyday people – about some intensely personal topics. She gets her guests to open up about things that we tend to worry about often but openly discuss much less frequently – including death. For this year’s first installment of Common Shade\, we’ll welcome Anna to Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel and get her to do the talking. Common Shade host Evan Michelson will sit down with Anna to discuss her podcast\, the allure of those tough topics\, and her own experiences with life’s (and death’s) inevitabilities. Questions and discussion from the audience will follow. \n \nMorbid Anatomy Museum and Green-Wood present Common Shade – a dialogue existing on the borderlands between the living and the dead. Hosted in Green-Wood’s intimate Historic Chapel\, Common Shade will cultivate a social space for death – a place to examine death’s prevalence in our lives\, and its shifting place in history\, art\, culture\, and society. Drawing from Green-Wood’s bucolic setting and using history as our anchor\, each night’s presentations will include dialogue and interviews with guests. Together with artists\, practitioners\, scholars\, and peers\, Common Shade discussions will explore our humble acknowledgments of and engagements with death. \n \n$20 for members of Green-Wood\, Morbid Anatomy Museum and BHS/$25 for non-members. Drinks will be available for purchase during the event (free for Key Holder members with proof of membership). \n \nClick here for our inclement weather policy. \n \nMobile users: Please tap here to buy tickets.\n \n\nNot a Member?\nClick here for all of our membership levels and information. \nAlready a Member?\nClick the “Enter promotional code here (members\, use your ID#)” link in the bottom right corner of the ticket box and enter your ID number to apply your ticket discount.
