SUMMARY:The Art of Goodbye: German Expressionism
DESCRIPTION:Credit: Ernst Ludwig Kirchner\, Street\, Berlin\, 1913\, Museum of Modern Art.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Art of Goodbye explores how artists have depicted loss throughout history. From ancient Greek funerary urns to medieval crucifixion altar pieces and haunting World War I trench scenes\, the program delves into how different eras confronted grief. Each session highlights the artists\, their works\, and the societies that shaped or resisted these expressions of sorrow. Together\, we’ll trace how art has served as a means to understand\, express\, and sometimes transcend loss. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: Free. Registration required. \n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVirtual EventA Zoom link will be in your confirmation email upon registration.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis evening’s session focuses on how German Expressionist artists of the early twentieth century confronted the turmoil of their time—war\, social upheaval\, and existential dread—by rejecting traditional beauty in favor of distorted forms\, bold colors\, and provocative imagery. \n\n\n\nThe Art of Goodbye is a series in Death Education led by Harry Weil\, Green-Wood’s Vice President of Education and Public Programs who holds a PhD in art history and has lectured extensively on modern and contemporary art. \n\n\n\nFree. Registration required. Please consider a donation to the Green-Wood Historic Fund so that we can continue to offer free and low-cost programs throughout the year.

SUMMARY:ARCH by Kaleider (UK)
DESCRIPTION:Presented as part of the DOWN TO EARTH international festival of multidisciplinary performance in public spaces.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSet against the backdrop of Green-Wood’s historic landscape\, ARCH is a powerful\, open-air performance from the UK-based collective Kaleider. Conceived and directed by Seth Honnor\, this meditative\, large-scale work invites audiences to witness the construction of a freestanding arch—two-thirds concrete\, one-third ice—accompanied by a choir of live singers from New York’s MasterVoices. \n\n\n\n\n\nTo reserve your spot\, click here. \n\n\n\nIn-Person Event(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\nARCH explores the tension between permanence and impermanence\, and structure and collapse. Through physical performance and a haunting\, nonverbal score by composer Verity Standen\, it provides a thoughtful yet urgent reflection on the systems we construct—architectural\, economic\, political—and their effects on our environment and each other. \n\n\n\nFor more information and to reserve tickets when they become available\, please visit Down to Earth’s website. \n\n\n\nAbout DOWN TO EARTH:\n\n\n\nDOWN TO EARTH Festival Director and Executive Producer: Elena SiyankoDOWN TO EARTH Festival Director: Frank HentschkerProducer and Associate Director of Programs\, Segal Center: Meg AraneoProducer: Natalie Rine \n\n\n\nDOWN TO EARTH\, NYC’s First International Festival of Multidisciplinary Creation in Public Spaces\, brings world-class international performance\, theater\, contemporary circus\, opera installation\, and participatory events—absolutely free—directly to New York City’s vibrant\, diverse communities. An initiative that embraces global exchange and democratizes cultural expression\, the inaugural festival runs from August 29–September 7\, 2025. The Martin E. Segal Theatre Center at The Graduate Center\, CUNY\, serves as the festival’s producer\, organizational and curatorial home\, and fiscal agent.  \n\n\n\nHere in NYC\, partnering with parks in Brooklyn\, Manhattan\, and Queens and collaborating with more than 10 dynamic cultural and community organizations\, we’re staging performances and workshops across multiple urban spaces. Citizen expression beats at the heart of the festival’s artistic vision. DOWN TO EARTH affirms art’s critical role in the economic\, social\, and mental well-being of all New Yorkers. With a focus on how artistic presence transforms the experience of place\, and the powerful role of outdoor creation in transforming communities and spaces\, DOWN TO EARTH seeks to expand access to cultural expression\, privilege public assembly\, and combat the injustices inherent in socio-economic exclusion. Central to the festival’s mission is our commitment to dismantling cultural barriers by offering free programs for students\, youth\, immigrant communities\, and families. By attracting a diverse public to free outdoor arts and in situ performances that are accessible and inviting\, the festival will redress the shortcomings of an expensive system of cultural dissemination.
