SUMMARY:Death Café
DESCRIPTION:The Death Café is inspired by the centuries-old European salon (or café)\, an informal gathering to discuss philosophical\, political or scientific ideas. In 2011\, British entrepreneur Jon Underwood brought this concept to discussions of the most universal topic of all: death. Underwood’s intention was to provide an opportunity to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” Today\, there are over 4\,400 Death Cafes in 26 countries around the world. \nGreen-Wood is proud to host monthly gatherings of the Death Café here in our beautiful\, modern chapel. Amy Cunningham\, death educator and creator of the Brooklyn-based blog TheInspiredFuneral.com\, invites participants to share their thoughts and feelings on death. It’s an opportunity for safe and open exchanges\, without an agenda. Tea and light snacks are provided. \n“A place for people to discuss our inevitable fate.” – Gothamist \n“It’s a reversal for American culture\, which for a long time has shied away from these conversations.” – Village Voice \n“[E]ncouraging people to talk about death more freely and naturally.” – Haaretz \nFree to attend\, RSVP recommended. Please register using the Eventbrite box below. \nThis program takes place in our Modern Chapel just to the right after passing through the Gothic Arches at the main entrance. All events will take place rain or shine. Click here for our inclement weather policy. \n \nMobile users: Please tap here for free registration.\n

SUMMARY:Birding in Peace
DESCRIPTION:Before our gates open to the general public\, birding expert Rob Jett leads these peaceful early morning walking tours to discover the many birds that make Green-Wood their home—at least temporarily. Green-Wood’s official birding checklist will be made available to all attendees\, or you can print it in advance here. \n\n\n\nAnd depending when you stop by\, you may see a variety of different species passing through: \n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: $20\, and $15 for members \n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWalking Tour(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nEarly Spring Migration (April)\n\n\n\nOur April tours will be a feast for the ears and eyes with the trilling song of pine warblers and drumming pronouncements of woodpeckers on newly blossoming trees (including magnolias\, maples\, quinces\, and dogwoods). We’ll discover thousands of songbirds resting before their trip farther north as well as arriving herons and egrets at Green-Wood’s glacial ponds. \n\n\n\nPeak Spring Migration (May to mid-June)\n\n\n\nFrom ruby-throated hummingbirds to over twenty species of colorful wood warblers\, our peak migration tours will feature many of the 163 bird species that have been recorded at Green-Wood during the month of May. Beginning just after sunrise\, we will experience spring’s dawn chorus at the most active time of day for birds. \n\n\n\nSummer Birding (Late June to August)\n\n\n\nIn July we should see the offspring of our resident red-tailed hawk bravely preparing to leave the nest. Warbler songs will be replaced by chirring cicadas and the tweets of fledgling birds. Butterflies and dragonflies are abundant. By late-July\, expect the arrival of the first southbound migrants. \n\n\n\nBefore Purchasing Your Ticket\, Please Note:\n\n\n\nDue to COVID-19\, this tour may be canceled. Attendees will be notified immediately of any changes and your ticket(s) will be refunded.Attendees are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to wear a face covering at all times\, regardless of vaccine status\, and follow ALL instructions and guidance from Cemetery staff and ambassadors.
SUMMARY:Mahler’s 9th for Four Hands
DESCRIPTION:Credit: Kevin Condon\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Long Story\n\n\n\nMahler’s towering 9th Symphony is one of the single most profound musical statements ever written\, culminating in a final movement that unfolds as an extended meditation on mortality\, slowly and achingly exploring the space between sound and silence\, presence and absence\, life and death. \n\n\n\nNormally this piece requires a 100-person orchestra\, but since that might feel a bit tight in the Catacombs\, we went one better by bringing in the staggering pianistic talents of Jed Distler and Jerome Kuderna (who is replacing Stewart Goodyear due to illness) to perform a rarely-heard arrangement of the work for four hands on one piano that’s both epic and intimate. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: $80. No member discount available. \n\n\n\n\nBuy Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn-Person Event(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Short Story\n\n\n\nCome experience this heart-rendingly poignant\, bittersweetly beautiful farewell to life\, performed in the Catacombs as you’ll never hear it again. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented in partnership with Death of Classical as part of the Angel’s Share series.  \n\n\n\n$80. No member discount available. \n\n\n\nBefore Purchasing Your Tickets\, Please Note:\n\n\n\nTickets are non-refundable and cannot be exchanged for another performance or timeslot. We will start with an hour long reception at the Modern Chapel to enjoy a whiskey tasting and snacks (all free!)\, and the beauty of the Cemetery\, before the program begins. Tasting is for those 21 years of age or older with proof of ID. The journey to and from the Catacombs takes approximately 20-30 minutes\, which includes walking over hilly and uneven terrain; proper footwear is recommended. A trolley service to and from the site will be available. The program inside the Catacombs will run for approximately one hour with no intermission.Attendees must follow ALL instructions and guidance from Cemetery staff and ambassadors. Green-Wood reserves the right to deny entry to anyone who refuses to comply with these guidelines\, which are based on CDC\, state\, and city mandates.Feeling Sick?
