SUMMARY:Femme Fatales
DESCRIPTION:Many distinguished and noteworthy New Yorkers found their permanent residences at Green-Wood in the nineteenth century; it was the place to be buried. Among them\, however\, are also those whose reputations are not as admirable\, including Fanny White\, famed New York City courtesan and brothel manager; Emma Cunningham\, who was tried for the murder of society dentist\, Harvey Burdell (he was strangled and stabbed fifteen times) amidst rumors of greed\, lust\, and depravity; and the Dublin-born Kitty Terry\, who ran away to Liverpool at fifteen where two high-end con men and thieves courted her and together formed a romantic triplet. Expert tour guide Ruth Edebohls will share tales of their alleged misdeeds and unscrupulous behavior. \n \n$20 for members of Green-Wood and BHS / $25 for non-members \n \nGreen-Wood trolley tours are fully accessible and ADA compliant. In order to accommodate a wheelchair or other mobility device on the trolley\, advance arrangements must be made. Please call (718) 210-3080\, ext. 1. Please note that portions of the tour take place outside the trolley and may require exiting the vehicle on multiple occasions. Please contact the Historic Fund for more information. \n \nCheck-in will take place by the Gothic Arch at our Main Entrance at 5th Avenue and 25th Street. Trolley tours are run rain or shine\, with the exception of dangerous conditions as determined by Green-Wood. Click here for our inclement weather policy. \n \n \nMobile users: Please tap here to buy tickets.\n \n\nNot a Member?\nClick here for all of our membership levels and information. \nAlready a Member?\nClick the “Enter promotional code here (members\, use your ID#)” link in the bottom right corner of the ticket box and enter your ID number to apply your ticket discount. SUMMARY:Dead Distillers Trolley Tour
DESCRIPTION: \nGreen-Wood is teaming up with our friends at Kings County Distillery to delve into the storied past of distilling in Brooklyn. The afternoon kicks off with a trolley tour of the cemetery’s “permanent residents” with whiskey connections\, including the one and only casualty of the Brooklyn Whiskey Wars of the late 1860s and early 1870s. Afterward\, the trolley will head to Kings County Distillery in the Brooklyn Navy Yard where visitors will see first-hand how whiskey is made and enjoy a tasting of four delectable varieties. \n \nThis tour is based upon the newly published book “Dead Distillers: A History of the Upstarts and Outlaws who Made American Spirits” by Colin Spoelman\, co-founder and Master Distiller at Kings County Distillery. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the distillery. \n \nYou must be 21 or older to participate in this tour; I.D. required. \n \n$35 for members of Green-Wood and BHS / $40 for non-members \n \nGreen-Wood trolley tours are fully accessible and ADA compliant. \n \nFor this program you will check in at the Gothic Arches\, right at the main entrance. SUMMARY:Me and My Sparrows
DESCRIPTION:Credit: Evan Rabeck\nIt’s a little known fact that the common house sparrow was introduced to North America right here at Green-Wood. In 1854\, about 100 were brought from England and released in the Cemetery (as well as along the Narrows) as natural predators of the inchworms that were destroying trees throughout the city. Today there are approximately seventy-four million sparrows in the United States\, and even veteran birders say they are among the most difficult to distinguish. Are you ready to take the sparrow challenge? From the American Tree Sparrow to the White-crowned Sparrow\, this course will focus on the seventeen regularly-occurring New World sparrow species around the Big Apple\, breaking down the basics of size\, shape\, and behavior. \n \nOnce ticket secures a spot for both sessions\, on October 14th and October 21st\, from 10 AM to 12 PM. Comfortable footwear is recommended\, as we will be exploring Green-Wood for part of the class. \n \n$25 for members of Green-Wood and BHS / $30 for non-members \n \nClick here for our inclement weather policy. \n \nMobile users: Please tap here to buy tickets.\n \n\nNot a Member?\nClick here for all of our membership levels and information. \nAlready a Member?\nClick the “Enter promotional code here (members\, use your ID#)” link in the bottom right corner of the ticket box and enter your ID number to apply your ticket discount. DESCRIPTION:Learn how you can play an active role in supporting the health of our urban forest\, including the basics of watering\, tree bed gardening\, and soil cultivation. \nThis program will take place outdoors and meet at 41stt Street between 8th and 9th Avenues. \nFree – visit TreesNY website\, www.treesny.org\, for more information and to reserve your space. \nGIVE TREES A CHANCE\nEnvironmental Justice in South Brooklyn\n \nGreen-Wood’s own neighborhood\, Sunset Park\, is one of the fastest growing and most diverse neighborhoods in all of New York City. Yet\, it also faces serious environmental challenges. Car and truck exhaust from the Gowanus Expressway and industrial emissions from its small manufacturers create higher than average levels of harmful air pollution. Street trees to the rescue! They’re nature’s miracle workers: they intercept and absorb storm water runoff\, provide oxygen\, fight climate change\, and lower air temperatures. \nThe 6\,500 street trees of Sunset Park have a job to do. And they need all the help they can get! Together with TreesNY\, Green-Wood’s horticulture staff is training a team of tree advocates! If you care about the environment\, join us. TreesNY works with both youth and adult volunteers and works throughout the five boroughs of New York City. \nFunding for this project is provided by the NYS Environmental Protection Fund as administered by the Environmental Justice Community Impact Grant Program of the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation.

SUMMARY:In the Parlor: The Final Goodbye Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Take an intimate journey into the lives of three families who have chosen to claim their rightful and active role in caring for dying family members. Each seeks a more personal and fulfilling way to say goodbye. \nThe film challenges us to reflect on the experience of death\, which is so often feared\, denied\, or left unspoken. Heidi Boucher\, filmmaker and home death care guide for over thirty years\, wrote\, directed\, and produced the film. A discussion will follow the screening with Amy Cunningham\, Green-Wood’s death educator. \nPresented as part of Reimagine End of Life\, a community-wide exploration of death and celebration of life through creativity and conversation. \nTo purchase tickets\, click here.

SUMMARY:An Inquiry into End-of-Life Experiences: Film Screening and Q&A
DESCRIPTION:This film illuminates occurrences that are rarely shared publicly but remain deeply meaningful to those who experience them. After the screening\, Harry Weil\, Green-Wood’s Manager of Programs\, will join Davis in a discussion about her research and work. \nFive years ago\, artist Leigh Davis had a strange and profound experience at the deathbed of a family member. Since then\, she has worked to create a body of work examining unusual phenomena reported to happen around the time of a death. They include premonitions\, seeing a golden light\, chills or an unexplained warmth\, and sudden lucidity. Davis has recorded over 20 end-of-life experiences through interviews with hospice nurses\, chaplains\, social scientists\, therapists and family members. \nPresented as part of Reimagine End of Life\, a community-wide exploration of death and celebration of life through creativity and conversation. \nTo purchase tickets\, click here.

SUMMARY:Making an Exit: From the Magnificent to the Macabre
DESCRIPTION: \n \nAuthor and journalist Sarah Murray never gave much thought to what might happen to her remains – until her father died. While he’d always insisted his “organic matter” would have no significance\, he surprised the family by leaving detailed arrangements for the disposal of his ashes. His last request prompted Sarah to explore how – across centuries and cultures – humans have built memorials to their lives. Sarah will share stories\, photos\, and insights from her book Making an Exit: From the Magnificent to the Macabre – How We Dignify the Dead\, which documents her journeys across the world on a very personal quest: seeking inspiration for her own eventual send-off. \n \n “A fascinating travelogue\, but also a personal meditation on loss and fate. Ms. Murray excels in the role of intrepid tour guide.” – The Economist \n \n$10 for members of Green-Wood and BHS / $15 for non-members \n \nClick here for more Morbid Anatomy at Green-Wood events. \n \nClick here for our inclement weather policy. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nMobile users: Please tap here to buy tickets.\n \n\nNot a Member?\nClick here for all of our membership levels and information. \nAlready a Member?\nClick the “Enter promotional code here (members\, use your ID#)” link in the bottom right corner of the ticket box and enter your ID number to apply your ticket discount.
