These loud-voiced mimics—once pirate companions and symbols of imperial power—now forge surprising lives in our cityscapes\, their calls both strange and familiar. \n\n\n\nJoin Shanzhai Lyric\, Green-Wood’s 2025 Artist in Residence\, for a film program exploring the intricate\, evolving relationship between humans and parrots. Through experimental documentary and poetic visual essays\, we’ll reflect on how these creatures—masters of mimicry yet undeniably their own—challenge us to rethink ideas of home\, communication\, and freedom. \n\n\n\nAbout the artists:\n\n\n\nThe poetic inquiry of Shanzhai Lyric uses the concept of “shanzhai”—the Chinese term for counterfeit—as a framework through which to reconsider notions of ownership and property. Its stewards\, Ming Lin and Alex Tatarsky\, both born and raised in New York\, draw inspiration from their Lower Manhattan neighborhood\, particularly the immigrant community of street vendors\, small business owners\, and artists around Canal Street\, the city’s hub for counterfeit goods. Circulating an archive of over 400 shanzhai poetry-garments\, Shanzhai Lyric engages with global production schemes by considering the politics and poetics of the bootleg garment. Their residency focuses on Green-Wood’s colony of monk parakeets who are celebrated for their unique place in the city’s ecosystem\, and whom they’ve called “the original mimicry artists.” \n\n\n\nShanzhai Lyric have previously exhibited their work in national and international institutions\, including MoMA PS1; Henry Moore Institute; and Times Museum\, among others. Shanzhai Lyric’s practice has been supported by numerous residencies\, including the LES Studio Program at Cuchifritos\, Canal Projects\, and Cité des arts.  \n\n\n\nFilms Include:\n\n\n\nYma Sumac: Chuncho (1953) 3:36  \n\n\n\nDubbed the Peruvian Songbird\, Yma Sumac is said to have acquired her incredible vocal range by imitating the birds of the Andean mountains. This film by artists Allora & Calzadilla\, in collaboration with science fiction author Ted Chiang\, explores translation as a device to trace the slippery space between the human and non-human. \n\n\n\nThe Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill (2005) 1:23 \n\n\n\nAn unemployed musician cares for the community of wild parrots that reside just outside his home. When the neighborhood begins to upscale\, and displacement from his rent-free cabin becomes imminent\, he both fears the parrots’ fate and finds solace among them—leading him to question the limits of human freedom. \n\n\n\nFree\, registration required. Join Shanzhai Lyric\, Green-Wood’s 2025 Artists in Residence\, for an ikebana workshop using invasive plants at the Cemetery. Led by artist Christian Kōun Alborz Oldham\, who trained under ikebana master Kosen Ohtsubo\, this hands-on workshop will focus on “freestyle” ikebana. \n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: Free\, registration required \n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn-Person Event(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\nThis revolutionary twentieth-century approach blends centuries-old tradition with dynamic creative expression. Along the way\, participants will forage for invasive plants and use them to create their ikebana arrangements during a hands-on workshop by Oldham at the Fort Hamilton Gatehouse. \n\n\n\nSome supplies will be provided\, but attendees are encouraged to bring additional materials\, including: \n\n\n\n\nPlant materials: Any floral or vegetable elements you’d like to use or share—anything from daisies to bananas\, whether purchased or gathered. Some materials will be foraged at Green-Wood\, but the more\, the better!\n\n\n\nContainers: Vases or any type of vessel that can hold water. It doesn’t need to be a traditional vase—anything watertight will do.\n\n\n\nUnusual or personal items: Feel free to bring any unique or unexpected objects you’d like to incorporate into your arrangement. Think of this as flower arranging meets assemblage—creativity is welcome\, as long as it works with water.\n\n\n\n\nA $20 suggested donation for this event ensures we can provide free and low-cost programs throughout the year.  \n\n\n\nShanzhai Lyric\n\n\n\nThe poetic inquiry of Shanzhai Lyric uses the concept of “shanzhai”—the Chinese term for counterfeit—as a framework to reconsider notions of ownership and property. Its stewards\, Ming Lin and Alex Tatarsky\, born and raised in New York\, draw inspiration from their Lower Manhattan neighborhood\, particularly the immigrant community of street vendors\, small business owners\, and artists around Canal Street\, the city’s hub for counterfeit goods. Circulating an archive of over 400 shanzhai poetry-garments\, Shanzhai Lyric engages with global production schemes by considering the politics and poetics of the bootleg garment. Their residency focuses on Green-Wood’s colony of monk parakeets\, who are celebrated for their unique place in the city’s ecosystem\, and whom they’ve called “the original mimicry artists.” \n\n\n\nShanzhai Lyric has previously exhibited their work in national and international institutions\, including MoMA PS1\, Henry Moore Institute\, and Times Museum\, among others.
