SUMMARY:(SOLD OUT) David Hertzberg: The Rose Elf (World Premiere)
DESCRIPTION:Select another Angel’s Share event (Concerts in the Catacombs) in the summer series. \nYou may join the waitlist for any of the Rose Elf performances below. \nMake sure you never miss out on tickets again! Green-Wood members get access to tickets weeks before the general public. Join today. \nThe Angel’s Share kicks off with the World Premiere of The Rose Elf\, a chamber opera by composer David Hertzberg\, directed by the visionary R. B. Schlather and starring award-winning mezzo-soprano Samantha Hankey. Hertzberg just won the Music Critics Association of North America’s “Best New Opera Award” for his last work\, The Wake World (based on famed occultist Aleister Crowley)\, and in The Rose Elf he tells the tale of two lovers torn apart by a senseless act of violence; and of a strange and sensuous being\, at once near and distant\, who witnesses this tragedy and is transformed. \nDirected by R.B. Schlather \nThe Singers: Samantha Hankey\, The Elf; Alisa Jordheim\, The Girl/Luna; Kyle Bielfield\, The Beloved/Horus; Andrew Bogard\, The Brother \nThe Orchestra: Teddy Poll\, conductor; Zhenwei Li\, clarinet; Katherine Jordan\, horn; Bradley Loudis\, percussion; Euntaek Kim\, piano; Shannon Lee\, violin; Abigail Fayette\, violin; Sung Jin Lee\, viola; John-Henry Crawford\, cello; Sam Casseday\, bass \nThe Angel’s Share\, a new series of opera and chamber music concerts\, takes place in Green-Wood’s Catacombs. One of the oldest structures in the 478-acre National Historic Landmark Cemetery\, the Catacombs were built in the 1850s and are normally closed to the public. The series takes its name from the distiller’s term for whiskey that evaporates while maturing in the barrel\, thus going to the angels. \nEach performance includes a pre-concert reception at sunset overlooking New York harbor and the Manhattan skyline. \n$75 for members of Green-Wood and BHS / $80 for non-members \nPLEASE NOTE: Ticketholders must be 21 years or older. \nClick here for our inclement weather policy. \nMobile users: Please tap here to join the waitlist.\n\nNot a Member?\nNew or renewing members are entitled to one free tour ticket a year! SUMMARY:Death Café
DESCRIPTION:The Death Café is inspired by the centuries-old European salon (or café)\, an informal gathering to discuss philosophical\, political or scientific ideas. In 2011\, British entrepreneur Jon Underwood brought this concept to discussions of the most universal topic of all: death. Underwood’s intention was to provide an opportunity to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” Today\, there are over 4\,400 Death Cafes in 26 countries around the world. \nGreen-Wood is proud to host monthly gatherings of the Death Café here in our beautiful\, modern chapel. Amy Cunningham\, death educator and creator of the Brooklyn-based blog TheInspiredFuneral.com\, invites participants to share their thoughts and feelings on death. It’s an opportunity for safe and open exchanges\, without an agenda. Tea and light snacks are provided. \n“A place for people to discuss our inevitable fate.” – Gothamist \n“It’s a reversal for American culture\, which for a long time has shied away from these conversations.” – Village Voice \n“[E]ncouraging people to talk about death more freely and naturally.” – Haaretz \nFree to attend\, RSVP recommended. Please register using the Eventbrite box below. \nThis program takes place in our Modern Chapel just to the right after passing through the Gothic Arches at the main entrance. All events will take place rain or shine. Click here for our inclement weather policy. \n \nMobile users: Please tap here for free registration.\n

SUMMARY:Dead Distillers Trolley Tour
DESCRIPTION: \nGreen-Wood is teaming up with our friends at Kings County Distillery to delve into the storied past of distilling in Brooklyn. The afternoon kicks off with a trolley tour of the cemetery’s “permanent residents” with whiskey connections\, including the one and only casualty of the Brooklyn Whiskey Wars of the late 1860s and early 1870s. SUMMARY:Film Screening: Exit Music
DESCRIPTION:Courtesy of Cameron Mullenneaux\n*New York Premiere* \nBorn with cystic fibrosis\, 28-year-old Ethan Rice has been preparing to die his entire life. His father Ed\, a Vietnam veteran with PTSD\, immersed him in a world of imagination and documented it on camera\, a hobby that provided relief from the fear of his son’s prognosis and his own painful past. Equal parts comedy and darkness\, Exit Music is the last year\, last breath\, and final creative act of Ethan as he awaits the inevitable. Interweaving home movies with Ethan’s original music and animation\, his story is an unflinching meditation on mortality and invites the viewer to experience Ethan’s transition from reality to memory. In a culture that often looks away from death\, this film demystifies the dying process\, a universal cornerstone of the human experience. \nAfter the screening\, filmmaker Cameron Mullenneaux will be in conversation with Green-Wood’s Death Educator Amy Cunningham. \n7:45 PM: Doors Open\n8:30 PM: Live Music by Samuel R Saffery\n9:00 PM: Film Begins\n10:30 PM: Q&A\n11:00 PM: After-Party Sponsored by Corona Extra\, Ketel One Family Made Vodka and Fever-Tree \nClick here to purchase tickets.

Beginning just after sunrise\, we will experience spring’s dawn chorus at the active time of day for birds. \n \nSummer Birding Sundays\nJune & July from 6:00 AM to 7:30 AM (except July 1st)\nSunday August 5th from 6:00 AM to 7:30 AM & August 19th from 6:30 AM to 8:00 AM \nIn July we should see the offspring of our resident red-tailed hawk bravely preparing to leave the nest. SUMMARY:Death and Dying in the LGBTQ Community
DESCRIPTION:Credit: William Wood\nDeath is notable for its universality\, but death and dying are often experienced differently by those in the LGBTQ community. Disparities associated with social inequality as well as institutionalized homophobia and transphobia greatly affect the mental and physical health of LBGTQ persons worldwide. The Center for Disease Control stresses the “need for culturally competent medical care and prevention services” specific to this population. \nJoin death educator Amy Cunningham\, trust and estate attorney Michael Bond\, Esq.\, funeral celebrant Donna Henes\, and Teresa Theophano\, Assistant Director of Care Management Services at SAGE\, the advocacy group for LGBTQ elders\, in a conversation about death\, dying\, and funeral rituals in the LGBTQ community. Panelists will explore a range of topics\, including historic precedents (among them the discovery of a same sex couple’s tomb in ancient Egypt)\, the impact of the AIDS epidemic on the rise of alternative bereavement\, and the creation of non-traditional families when many churches and families of LGBTQ people turned their backs on – or failed to recognize – their LGBTQ members. Attendees will also learn about vital end-of-life related planning materials. \nFree to attend\, RSVP recommended. Please register using the Eventbrite box below. \nClick here for our inclement weather policy. \nMobile users: Please tap here for free registration.\n
