SUMMARY:Rowan Renee: The Perimeter Path
DESCRIPTION:Credit: Rowan Renee\n\n\n\n\n\nJune 3rd-September 4thFree and Open to the Public Daily10am–5pmHistoric Chapel \n\n\n\n\n\nIn-Person Event\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Perimeter Path is an immersive installation in the Historic Chapel by Green-Wood’s 2022 artist in residence\, Rowan Renee. Through extensive onsite research into the public burial lots around the Cemetery’s perimeter and the meticulous crafting of works in marble and glass\, Renee investigates how race and class influence memorialization. \n\n\n\nHistorically\, public lots at Green-Wood offered more affordable burial sites for the working class and poor. Many are located near the Cemetery’s perimeter\, where land was seen as less valuable because of its proximity to city streets. In a historic site like Green-Wood\, known for its stunning and elaborate Victorian era monuments\, Renee shifts visitors’ focus to the erasures and absences in the landscape that point to societal and systemic patterns of inequity.  \n\n\n\nClick here to read more about The Perimeter Path. To learn more about Renee’s creative process\, register for Art and Preservation: An Artist Talk with Rowan Renee (Monday\, July 10th\, 6pm) or To the Perimeter: A Walking Tour with Rowan Renee (Sundays\, July 23rd and September 3rd\, 10am).  \n\n\n\nRowan Renee (b. 1985\, West Palm Beach\, Florida) is a genderqueer artist currently working in Brooklyn\, NY. Their work addresses intergenerational trauma\, gender-based violence and the impact of the criminal legal system through image\, text and installation. They have been exhibited in solo exhibitions at Brooklyn’s Smack Mellon gallery (2021)\, FiveMyles in Crown Heights (2021)\, Aperture Foundation (2017)\, and Pioneer Works (2015). They have received awards from the Aaron Siskind Foundation\, the Harpo Foundation and the Jerome Hill Foundation. You can learn more about their work on their website. \n\n\n\nThe Perimeter Path was made possible with support from the New York State Council on the Arts. \n\n\n\nFree and open to the public\, no reservations are necessary. Please consider a donation to The Green-Wood Historic Fund so that we can continue to offer free and low-cost programs throughout the year.

SUMMARY:I cannot not grieve: CRY SCREAM SHOUT SING
DESCRIPTION:Presented in Partnership with More Art \n\n\n\nI cannot not grieve: CRY SCREAM SHOUT SING\, a newly commissioned performance by multidisciplinary artist Freya Powell\, draws upon the Sophoclean character of Elektra and a Greek chorus to recognize the experience of ambiguous loss as a means to counter the statistic-based records of the COVID-19 pandemic. The performance addresses the permanent state of grief we have been living in since the start of the pandemic. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: Free \n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\nIn-Person Event(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\nExploring the voice as medium this piece tests pitch\, tone\, pacing\, and silence from operatic singing to theatrical utterances. Through varied public expressions of grief (crying\, screaming\, shouting\, and singing) this performance will shroud the listener in an exploration of these outward bodily utterances. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTo reserve your ticket or more information\, visit More Art’s website. \n\n\n\nFreya Powell uses time-based and linguistic platforms to explore language and its relationship to memory\, myth\, and history. Her work has been exhibited in solo shows at Art in General\, Brooklyn\, NY (2017); Herron School of Art\, Indianapolis\, IN (2017); and Arts Santa Monica\, Barcelona\, Spain (2014). She has participated in group shows at institutions including MoMA PS1 (NY)\, EFA Project Space (NY)\, Queens Museum (NY)\, Socrates Sculpture Park (NY)\, and the Bronx Museum (NY)\, among others. SUMMARY:Death Cafe
DESCRIPTION:The Death Cafe is a simple concept. Bring strangers together to discuss one of the great universal truths: death. With thousands of chapters in over 25 countries around the world\, Death Cafes are informal gatherings that aim to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” There is no set agenda\, but small group conversations might include thoughts on burial and cremation versus water cremation and natural organic reduction\, what music you want played at your funeral\, the way death is depicted in literature and film\, or a personal experience you had dealing with grief. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: Free. Registration required. \n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn-Person Event(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\nTaking place in the Cemetery’s Modern Chapel\, Gabrielle Gatto\, Green-Wood’s coordinator of public programs and a death doula who holds a certificate in thanatology\, invites you to share their thoughts\, anxieties\, hopes\, and questions about death. It’s an opportunity for safe and open exchanges—along with tea and pastries!  \n\n\n\nIn remembrance of the 22nd anniversary of 9/11\, we will reserve space in this meeting to reflect on the particular branch of grief that finds its roots in tragedy. Green-Wood is the final resting place of many victims of 9/11; we will honor them with a reflection at the beginning of the program. \n\n\n\nFree. Registration required. Please consider a donation to the Green-Wood Historic Fund so that we can continue to offer free and low-cost programs throughout the year. \n\n\n\nBEFORE RESERVING YOUR SPOT\, PLEASE NOTE:\n\n\n\n\nAttendees must follow ALL instructions and guidance from Cemetery staff and ambassadors.\n\n\n\nTickets: There is no need to print tickets. SUMMARY:Plantasia
DESCRIPTION:Presented in Partnership with Pioneer Works and Sacred Bones Records \n\n\n\nRain Date Friday\, September 15th \n\n\n\nThis special evening of performances pays tribute to Mort Garson’s sought-after 1976 album Plantasia. Surrounded by the Cemetery’s lush vegetation\, Laraaji\, Drew McDowall\, DAOUI (Angel Bat Dawid & Oui Ennui)\, Alex Zhang Hungtai\, and North Americans will reimagine tracks from Plantasia while guests explore the grounds\, soak up the music\, and browse vendors and Plantasia related merch for sale. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: $40. \n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\nIn-Person Event(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\nIf you purchased a snake plant\, asparagus fern\, peace lily\, or what have you from Mother Earth on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles (or bought a Simmons mattress from Sears)\, you also took home Plantasia\, an album recorded especially for plants. Subtitled “warm earth music for plants… and the people that love them\,” it was full of bucolic\, charming\, stoner-friendly\, decidedly unscientific tunes enacted on the new-fangled device called the Moog. Plants date back to the dawn of time\, but apparently\, they loved the Moog\, never mind that the synthesizer had been on the market for just a few years. Most of all\, the plants loved the ditties made by composer Mort Garson. Over the years\, Garson’s discreet electronic music has gained a cult following\, leading to a reissue of the LP in 2019. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTo purchase tickets or for more information\, visit Pioneer Works’ website.  \n\n\n\nThis program will take place at Valley Water\, near Green-Wood’s Main Entrance. Attendees can only enter at 25th Street and Fifth Avenue. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn case of inclement weather\, tickets will be honored on the rain date\, Friday\, September 15. \n\n\n\nPlease bring a blanket or lawn chair to get comfortable. Outside food and alcohol are not permitted. Bags will be checked at the door.

DESCRIPTION:The Calidore String Quartet\n\n\n\n\n\nCredit: Kevin Condon\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented in partnership with Death of Classical \n\n\n\nThe Long Story\n\n\n\nComposed in the final years before his death\, Beethoven’s String Quartet Opus 130 remains to this day one of the most mysterious and revelatory works ever set to score. Beethoven had been deaf for decades when he wrote it\, and these six movements conjure a sound world unlike anything heard before or since\, speaking to the limitless reaches of human emotion\, from joy to despair\, the sacred to the profane\, and everything in between. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: $85 (no member discount) \n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn-Person Event(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\nThe beating heart of the piece is the slow movement\, which caused Beethoven himself to declare “that he had composed this Cavatina truly in the tears of melancholy.” We’ll finish the work as Beethoven originally intended\, with his Grosse Fugue finale that exists at the edges of madness and incomprehensibility\, hurtling between chaos and order in one of music’s most extraordinary expressions. \n\n\n\nFor these singular performances\, we are lucky enough to be graced by the glory of the Calidore Quartet – four of today’s leading musicians who “speak\, breathe\, think and feel as one” (Washington Post)\, and who stand among the world’s greatest interpreters of Beethoven’s music. \n\n\n\nThe Short Story\n\n\n\nBeethoven’s staggering string quartet offers us a musical vision of the space between emotion and expression. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor more information on this evening’s program and the performers\, visit Death of Classical’s website. \n\n\n\nBEFORE Purchasing Your Tickets\, PLEASE NOTE:\n\n\n\n\nTickets: There is no need to print tickets! We will start with a 45-minute reception at the Modern Chapel to enjoy a whiskey tasting and snacks (all free!)\, and the beauty of the Cemetery\, before the program begins. Tasting is for those 21 years of age or older with proof of ID.\n\n\n\nFor Your Comfort and Safety: The journey to and from the Catacombs takes approximately 20-30 minutes\, which includes walking over hilly and uneven terrain; proper footwear is recommended. SUMMARY:(Sold Out) Beethoven String Quartet Opus 130 & Grosse Fugue
Attendees will be checked in by name. \n\n\n\nWhere To Go: Check-in ONLY takes place at the Gothic Arch near the Main Entrance on Fifth Avenue and 25th Street (500 25th Street).\n\n\n\nBe On Time!: Check-in begins 15 minutes before your ticketed start time.
