SUMMARY:Bridget Kibbey & Friends: The Sacred and the Profane
DESCRIPTION:Harpist-slash-rockstar Bridget Kibbey brings a haunting program to the Catacombs\, accompanied by a team of top-notch string players. Together\, they’ll perform music that hovers in the shadows between darkness and light\, from Debussy’s Sacred and Profane dances\, to Bach’s haunting Toccata and Fugue in D Minor\, to the grand finale: André Caplet’s gripping Conte Fantastique. \nThe Program: Debussy: Danses Sacrée et Profane; Saint-Saëns: Fantaisie; Bach: Toccata and Fugue D Minor; Britten: Lachrymae; Caplet: Conte Fantastique \nThe Performers: Chad Hoopes: violin; Grace Park: violin; Matthew Lipman: viola; Mihai Marica: cello \nThe Angel’s Share\, a new series of opera and chamber music concerts\, takes place in Green-Wood’s Catacombs. One of the oldest structures in the 478-acre National Historic Landmark Cemetery\, the Catacombs were built in the 1850s and are normally closed to the public. The series takes its name from the distiller’s term for whiskey that evaporates while maturing in the barrel\, thus going to the angels. \nEach performance includes a pre-concert reception at sunset overlooking New York harbor and the Manhattan skyline. \n$75 for members of Green-Wood and BHS / $80 for non-members \nPLEASE NOTE: Ticketholders must be 21 years or older. \nClick here for our inclement weather policy. \nMobile users: Please tap here to buy tickets.\n\nNot a Member?\nNew or renewing members are entitled to one free tour ticket a year! We’ll discover thousands of songbirds resting before their trip north as well as arriving herons & egrets at Green-Wood’s glacial ponds. \n \nPeak Spring Migration Birding\nMay 5 and 6 (Sat/Sun)\, 13 (Sun)\, 19 and 20 (Sat/Sun)\, & 27 (Sun) from 6:00 AM to 7:30 AM \nFrom Ruby-throated Hummingbirds to over 20 species of colorful wood-warblers\, our peak migration tours will feature many of the 163 bird species that have been recorded at Green-Wood during the month of May. SUMMARY:After the Funeral: Memorializing Loved Ones
DESCRIPTION:Credit: Sybil Sage\n \n \nAfter the funeral is over\, how do we begin memorializing the precious memories of a loved one? While traditional acts – such as published obituaries\, grave markers\, scrap books\, and stories at the dinner table – are important and relevant\, there are new and exciting ways emerging on how to preserve a person’s life\, wisdom\, and cherished values. \n \nJoin death educator Amy Cunningham for a discussion about capturing the true legacy of a loved one. Over the past several years\, she has worked with hundreds of families to ensure that the rituals around memorializing feel true and right for each family. Learn about creating unique keepsakes\, whether it is the form of textiles\, artwork\, charitable donations\, or readings. She will also explore how digital platforms can provide an ideal space for sharing stories and memories that are easily accessible. Discover what might feel right for your family. \n \nFree to attend\, RSVP recommended. Please register using the Eventbrite box below. \n \nThis program takes place in our Modern Chapel just to the right after passing through the Gothic Arches at the main entrance. \n \nAll events will take place rain or shine. SUMMARY:Dead Distillers Trolley Tour
DESCRIPTION: \nGreen-Wood is teaming up with our friends at Kings County Distillery to delve into the storied past of distilling in Brooklyn. The afternoon kicks off with a trolley tour of the cemetery’s “permanent residents” with whiskey connections\, including the one and only casualty of the Brooklyn Whiskey Wars of the late 1860s and early 1870s. Afterward\, the trolley will head to Kings County Distillery in the Brooklyn Navy Yard where visitors will see first-hand how whiskey is made and enjoy a tasting of four delectable varieties. \n \nThis tour is based upon the newly published book “Dead Distillers: A History of the Upstarts and Outlaws who Made American Spirits” by Colin Spoelman\, co-founder and Master Distiller at Kings County Distillery. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the distillery. \n \nYou must be 21 or older to participate in this tour; I.D. required. \n \n$35 for members of Green-Wood and BHS / $40 for non-members \n \nGreen-Wood trolley tours are fully accessible and ADA compliant. In order to accommodate a wheelchair or other mobility device on the trolley\, advance arrangements must be made. Please call (718) 210-3080\, ext. 1. Please note that portions of the tour take place outside the trolley and may require exiting the vehicle on multiple occasions. SUMMARY:Sound the Alarm! Green-Wood’s Firemen
DESCRIPTION: \nFirefighting was an exceptionally dangerous occupation in nineteenth-century New York and Brooklyn. There were little to no fire safety regulations\, and up until 1865 Brooklyn’s fire companies were manned by volunteers – often more focused on inter-company rivalries than in putting out the fires. \n \nJoin Jeff Richman\, Green-Wood’s Historian\, for our first-ever tour to uncover the stories of these courageous men and their sacrifices. Visit the elaborate Firemen’s Monument (1848) that honors the death of thirty men who died in the line of duty\, plus the symbolic brownstone fire hydrants that mark the lot of the infamous Americus 6 Fire Company\, as well as first responders who died in the 9/11 attacks. \n \n$20 for members of Green-Wood and BHS / $25 for non-members. \n \nGreen-Wood trolley tours are fully accessible and ADA compliant. SUMMARY:Street Tree Care
DESCRIPTION: \n \nJoin your fellow environmentalists as we remove litter and weeds from the tree beds\, cultivate the soil\, and provide water and mulch for street trees in Sunset Park. \n \n*** \nGive Trees a Chance: Environmental Justice in South Brooklyn \nGreen-Wood’s own neighborhood\, Sunset Park\, is one of the fastest growing and most diverse neighborhoods in all of New York City. Yet\, it also faces serious environmental challenges. Car and truck exhaust from the Gowanus Expressway and industrial emissions from its small manufacturers create higher than average levels of harmful air pollution. Street trees to the rescue! They’re nature’s miracle workers: they intercept and absorb storm water runoff\, provide oxygen\, fight climate change\, and lower air temperatures. \nThe 6\,500 street trees of Sunset Park have a job to do. And they need all the help they can get! Together with TreesNY\, Green-Wood’s horticulture staff is training a team of tree advocates! If you care about the environment\, join us. Visit TreesNY’s website\, www.treesny.org\, for more information and to RSVP for these free programs. \nFunding for this project is provided by the NYS Environmental Protection Fund as administered by the Environmental Justice Community Impact Grant Program of the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation.

SUMMARY:Death Café
DESCRIPTION:The Death Café is inspired by the centuries-old European salon (or café)\, an informal gathering to discuss philosophical\, political or scientific ideas. In 2011\, British entrepreneur Jon Underwood brought this concept to discussions of the most universal topic of all: death. Underwood’s intention was to provide an opportunity to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” Today\, there are over 4\,400 Death Cafes in 26 countries around the world. \nGreen-Wood is proud to host monthly gatherings of the Death Café here in our beautiful\, modern chapel. Amy Cunningham\, death educator and creator of the Brooklyn-based blog TheInspiredFuneral.com\, invites participants to share their thoughts and feelings on death. It’s an opportunity for safe and open exchanges\, without an agenda. Tea and light snacks are provided. \n“A place for people to discuss our inevitable fate.” – Gothamist \n“It’s a reversal for American culture\, which for a long time has shied away from these conversations.” – Village Voice \n“[E]ncouraging people to talk about death more freely and naturally.” – Haaretz \nFree to attend\, RSVP recommended. Please register using the Eventbrite box below. \nThis program takes place in our Modern Chapel just to the right after passing through the Gothic Arches at the main entrance. SUMMARY:(Sold Out) A Night at Niblo’s Garden
DESCRIPTION: \nBoth nights of this event are sold out. Scroll down to join the waitlist for a particular date\, and make sure you never miss out on tickets again! Green-Wood members get access to tickets weeks before the general public. Join today. \n \nThis popular event is back in 2018 for two nights! SUMMARY:The Doorway to Joe: The Art of Joe Coleman
DESCRIPTION:A Conversation with the Artist \n \n“If P.T. Barnum had hired Breughel or Bosch to paint sideshow banners they might have resembled the art of Joe Coleman.” – The New York Times \n \n“Terrible things happen in Joe Coleman’s paintings. Flesh rots. Sores weep. The flames of hell burn brightly. Perversion runs rampant. Things fall apart: Bodies. Cities. The whole social order. Yet there’s beauty here\, too: The colors dazzle\, the detail astounds. And a stalwart symmetry surrounds his aberrant images\, a symmetry born of both faith and fear” – Nancy Shulins\, Associated Press \n \nRenowned iconoclast and painter Joe Coleman sits down for a conversation with Harold Schechter\, professor of American literature and popular culture at CUNY’s Queens College. The reception will include an exclusive sneak peak of the upcoming feature documentary about Coleman. \n \nThis program is presented in partnership with Morbid Anatomy and takes place in Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel\, just a short distance inside the main entrance at 5th Avenue and 25th Street. \n \n$15 for members of Green-Wood and BHS / $20 for non-members. \n \nClick here for our inclement weather policy. \n \nMobile users: Please tap here to buy tickets.\n \n\nNot a Member?\nClick here for all of our membership levels and information. \nAlready a Member?\nClick the “Enter promotional code here (members\, use your ID#)” link in the bottom right corner of the ticket box and enter your ID number to apply your ticket discount.
All events will take place rain or shine. Click here for our inclement weather policy. \n \nMobile users: Please tap here for free registration.\n

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Wild Nights with Emily
DESCRIPTION:Courtesy of Anna Stypko\nFresh off its SXSW premiere\, the dramatic comedy Wild Nights with Emily stars Molly Shannon as the poet Emily Dickinson. The film was inspired by an article in the New York Times that documented how infrared technologies restored erasures that hid romantic content in Dickinson’s letters. The poet’s persona\, popularized since her death\, was that of a reclusive spinster – a delicate wallflower\, too sensitive for this world. This film explores her passionate\, vivacious side that was covered up for years – most notably Emily’s lifelong romantic relationship with another woman (Susan Ziegler). After Emily died\, a rivalry emerged when her brother’s mistress (Amy Seimetz) along with editor T.W. Higginson (Brett Gelman) published a book of Emily’s poems. Irreverent and surreal\, Wild Nights was one of “The 50 Most Anticipated American Independent Films of 2018” (Filmmaker Magazine); you will never look at Dickinson the same way again. \n7:45 PM: Doors Open\n8:30 PM: Live Music\n9:00 PM: Film Begins\n10:30 PM: Q&A\n11:00 PM: After-Party Sponsored by Corona Extra\, Ketel One Family Made Vodka and Fever-Tree \nClick here to purchase tickets.
