SUMMARY:After the End
DESCRIPTION:A Ritual ABOUT LOSS by Candy Chang and James A. Reeves\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSEPTEMBER 15TH-DECEMBER 6TH\, 10AM-4:30PMHistoric ChapelFree\n\n\n\nDescribe your loss. This simple prompt will be asked of each visitor to After the End\, a new site-specific installation in Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel. Influenced in equal parts by religious ceremonies and science fiction\, artists Candy Chang and James A. Reeves have created a public ritual to contemplate loss in all forms: the loss of loved ones\, relationships\, health\, and worlds we once knew—as well as the practices that have helped us endure. Visitors are invited to share their experience on a scroll and place it upon an illuminated altar. Lit from within\, each response becomes a devotional candle\, and together they form an evolving field of light. Selected reflections will be projected throughout the Chapel\, and visitors can sit in the apse to contemplate the experiences of others as well as their own. After the End offers a modern refuge that reminds us we are not alone as we mourn the end of one reality and enter the next. \n\n\n\nFor over a decade\, Chang and Reeves have collaborated on public rituals to contemplate the human condition. Their installations have been exhibited at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York City\, the Annenberg Space for Photography in Los Angeles\, and the Mural Arts Program in Philadelphia. Inspired by the devotional practices of religion\, the ancient I Ching\, and cyberpunk visions\, Chang and Reeves create public works that facilitate conversations about reckoning with an increasingly alienating world. To learn more\, visit ritualfields.com. \n\n\n\nAfter the End was made possible by a generous grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. \n\n\n\nDue to the overwhelming popular response to After the End\, the installation has now been extended through December 6th! \n\n\n\nFree and open to the public\, no reservations are necessary. Please consider a donation to The Green-Wood Historic Fund so that we can continue to offer free and low-cost programs throughout the year.

SUMMARY:Latent Teloneum
DESCRIPTION:Heidi Lau and Nikholis Planck\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOctober 23rd-DECEMBER 5TH\, 11:00AM-4:00PMFort Hamilton Gatehouse AtticFree\n\n\n\nSince January 2021\, Heidi Lau\, Green-Wood’s artist in residence\, has been creating ceramic sculptures in a studio space on the first floor of the Fort Hamilton Gatehouse. Just above her a large attic sat relatively quiet except for spiders busily weaving their webs. Nearing the end of her residency\, Lau has invited Nikholis Planck for a two-person exhibition in the attic\, which has been unlocked for the public’s viewing. All of the works on view\, like the spiders’ webs\, are suspended from the roof’s wooden support beams. The title\, chosen by the artists\, refers to the hidden costs of the creative process (teloneum is a Medieval word for a tax on the sale of goods). \n\n\n\nFree and open to the public\, no reservations are necessary. Please consider a donation to The Green-Wood Historic Fund so that we can continue to offer free and low-cost programs throughout the year. \n\n\n\nAttendees are asked to use caution when going up and down the stairs. Please do not touch any of the work on view.  \n\n\n\nThe Fort Hamilton Gatehouse is located near the intersection of Fort Hamilton Parkway and Miceli Place.

SUMMARY:Violet Oakley: Pioneering LGBTQ+ Artist
DESCRIPTION:Violet Oakley (1874-1961) was more than a designer\, illustrator\, and muralist—she was a pioneering American artist. As a leading figure of the American Renaissance\, she advocated for equal rights for all races and sexes\, and worked for world peace. In 1902\, Oakley became the first woman to be awarded a major commission for murals inside the Pennsylvania State capitol. Alongside  two of her classmates\, she formed the “Red Rose Girls\,” a group of women artists who lived together while they each became successful in the art world. Today\, she is regarded as an early member of the LGBTQ+ community\, having lived with her partner Edith Emerson for over 45 years. Join Bailey Van Hook\, professor emerita of art history at Virginia Tech\, for a lively conversation with Green-Wood’s historian\, Jeff Richman\, about Violet Oakley’s life and groundbreaking work as she strived in a male dominated field. \n\n\n\n\n\n$9 / $4 for members.

SUMMARY:Death Café
DESCRIPTION:The Death Café is inspired by the centuries-old European salon (or café)\, an informal gathering to discuss philosophical\, political or scientific ideas. In 2011\, British entrepreneur Jon Underwood brought this concept to discussions of the most universal topic of all: death. Underwood’s intention was to provide an opportunity to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” Today\, there are over 4\,400 Death Cafes in 26 countries around the world. \nGreen-Wood is proud to host monthly gatherings of the Death Café here in our beautiful\, modern chapel. Amy Cunningham\, death educator and creator of the Brooklyn-based blog TheInspiredFuneral.com\, invites participants to share their thoughts and feelings on death. It’s an opportunity for safe and open exchanges\, without an agenda. Tea and light snacks are provided. \n“A place for people to discuss our inevitable fate.” – Gothamist \n“It’s a reversal for American culture\, which for a long time has shied away from these conversations.” – Village Voice \n“[E]ncouraging people to talk about death more freely and naturally.” – Haaretz \nFree to attend\, RSVP recommended. Please register using the Eventbrite box below. \nThis program takes place in our Modern Chapel just to the right after passing through the Gothic Arches at the main entrance. All events will take place rain or shine. Click here for our inclement weather policy. \n \nMobile users: Please tap here for free registration.\n
