Through extensive onsite research into the public burial lots around the Cemetery’s perimeter and the meticulous crafting of works in marble and glass\, Renee investigates how race and class influence memorialization. \n\n\n\nHistorically\, public lots at Green-Wood offered more affordable burial sites for the working class and poor. Many are located near the Cemetery’s perimeter\, where land was seen as less valuable because of its proximity to city streets. In a historic site like Green-Wood\, known for its stunning and elaborate Victorian era monuments\, Renee shifts visitors’ focus to the erasures and absences in the landscape that point to societal and systemic patterns of inequity.  \n\n\n\nClick here to read more about The Perimeter Path. They have been exhibited in solo exhibitions at Brooklyn’s Smack Mellon gallery (2021)\, FiveMyles in Crown Heights (2021)\, Aperture Foundation (2017)\, and Pioneer Works (2015). They have received awards from the Aaron Siskind Foundation\, the Harpo Foundation and the Jerome Hill Foundation. DESCRIPTION:Credit: Evan Rabeck\n\n\n\n\n\nBefore our gates open to the general public\, birding expert Rob Jett leads these peaceful early morning walking tours to discover the many birds that make Green-Wood their home—at least temporarily. Green-Wood’s official birding checklist will be made available to all attendees\, or you can print it in advance here. \n\n\n\nAnd depending when you stop by\, you may see a variety of different species passing through: \n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: $20\, and $15 for members \n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWalking Tour(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\nEarly Spring Migration (April) \n\n\n\nOur April tours will be a feast for the ears and eyes with the trilling song of pine warblers and drumming pronouncements of woodpeckers on newly blossoming trees (including magnolias\, maples\, quinces\, and dogwoods). We’ll discover thousands of songbirds resting before their trip farther north as well as arriving herons and egrets at Green-Wood’s glacial ponds. \n\n\n\nPeak Spring Migration (May to mid-June) \n\n\n\nFrom ruby-throated hummingbirds to over twenty species of colorful wood warblers\, our peak migration tours will feature many of the 163 bird species that have been recorded at Green-Wood during the month of May. Beginning just after sunrise\, we will experience spring’s dawn chorus at the most active time of day for birds. \n\n\n\nSummer Birding (Late June to August) \n\n\n\nIn July we should see the offspring of our resident red-tailed hawk bravely preparing to leave the nest. Warbler songs will be replaced by chirring cicadas and the tweets of fledgling birds. Butterflies and dragonflies are abundant. Through extensive onsite research into the public burial lots around the Cemetery’s perimeter and the meticulous crafting of works in marble and glass\, Renee investigates how race and class influence memorialization. \n\n\n\nHistorically\, public lots at Green-Wood offered more affordable burial sites for the working class and poor. Many are located near the Cemetery’s perimeter\, where land was seen as less valuable because of its proximity to city streets. In a historic site like Green-Wood\, known for its stunning and elaborate Victorian era monuments\, Renee shifts visitors’ focus to the erasures and absences in the landscape that point to societal and systemic patterns of inequity.  \n\n\n\nClick here to read more about The Perimeter Path. We’ll discover thousands of songbirds resting before their trip farther north as well as arriving herons and egrets at Green-Wood’s glacial ponds. \n\n\n\nPeak Spring Migration (May to mid-June) \n\n\n\nFrom ruby-throated hummingbirds to over twenty species of colorful wood warblers\, our peak migration tours will feature many of the 163 bird species that have been recorded at Green-Wood during the month of May. Beginning just after sunrise\, we will experience spring’s dawn chorus at the most active time of day for birds. \n\n\n\nSummer Birding (Late June to August) \n\n\n\nIn July we should see the offspring of our resident red-tailed hawk bravely preparing to leave the nest. Warbler songs will be replaced by chirring cicadas and the tweets of fledgling birds. Butterflies and dragonflies are abundant. You’ll weave through the Cemetery’s stunning landscape and visit the graves of fascinating figures in New York and American history. This not-to-be-missed walking tour ends with a visit to the Catacombs\, which are normally closed to the public. \n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: $30\, and $25 for members \n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWalking Tour(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\nBefore Purchasing A Ticket\, Please Note:\n\n\n\n\nCOVID-19 Policy: In accordance with New York State and CDC guidance\, masks are optional. Attendees must follow ALL instructions and guidance from Cemetery staff and ambassadors.\n\n\n\nTickets: There is no need to print tickets! Attendees will be checked in by name.\n\n\n\nWhere To Go: Check-in takes place at the Main Entrance at Fifth Avenue and 25th Street (500 25th Street).\n\n\n\nFor Your Safety: This tour takes place in the dark. We strongly encourage attendees to wear suitable footwear and bring flashlights.The route includes several steep hills\, some stairs\, as well as grassy and uneven terrain. There is no place to sit down during the tour.
