SUMMARY:Closing Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Border Crossings: This and Other Worlds (November 2-4)\, a three-day series of programs\, performances\, and installations that takes inspiration from global practices of honoring those who are no longer with us-e.g.\, El Dia de Los Muertos (the Mexican “Day of the Dead”); the Buddhist and Taoist “Ghost Festival” of Zhong Yuan Jie; the Christian holiday of All Souls Day; and Qingming or “Tomb Sweeping Day\,” a traditional Chinese celebration. The centerpiece of Border Crossings is an altar designed for the community by artist Adrian Viajero Roman\, a long time Sunset Park resident. His inspiration is the El Dia de Los Muertos altars created to honor the dead throughout Mexico and the Mexican diaspora. With many free events\, Border Crossings is a weekend of celebration\, reflection\, and commemoration. \nCo-presented by Bard Graduate Center and The Green-Wood Cemetery\, Border Crossings is part of a series of public programs designed to complement our current exhibition Agents of Faith: Votive Objects in Time and Place. We welcome participants of all backgrounds and religious beliefs. \nAbout the Altar \nAdrian Viajero Roman’s altar commemorates loved ones who have crossed the border from life to death. In particular\, his Puerto Rican compatriots who died during Hurricane Maria in 2017 and those who lost their lives while crossing a border between Mexico and the United States. \nAdd something of your own and be a part of this work of art. All visitors are invited to bring personal offerings to the altar. Flowers\, photographs\, notes\, and/or other objects are welcome. (Please note that offerings left at the altar cannot be returned.) \n \nSchedule \nThe programs take place in and around Green-Wood’s main entrance at 25th Street and 5th Avenue. Please ask security at the Gothic Arch for where to go. \nFree here with RSVP (click Register and choose your event or events).

SUMMARY:Birding in Peace
DESCRIPTION: \n \n \n \n \nBefore our gates open to the general public\, birding expert Rob Jett leads these peaceful Sunday morning walking tours to discover the birds that make Green-Wood their home – at least temporarily. By September\, offspring of these nesting birds will be on their own. Returning warblers will be in their less flamboyant fall plumage. Large numbers of blackbirds\, flycatchers\, sparrows\, vireos\, and swallows will also be passing through. By October\, waterfowl are returning\, and we’ll look for raptors heading south. November will bring back our overwintering feathered denizens from the north. \n \n$10 for members of Green-Wood and BHS / $15 for non-members \n \nFor this program you will check in at the Gothic Arches\, right at the main entrance. \n \nClick here for our inclement weather policy. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nMobile users: Please tap here to buy tickets.\n \n\nNot a Member?\nClick here for all of our membership levels and information. \nAlready a Member?\nClick the “Enter promotional code here (members\, use your ID#)” link in the bottom right corner of the ticket box and enter your ID number to apply your ticket discount. SUMMARY:Artist Talk
SUMMARY:Making an Exit: From the Magnificent to the Macabre
DESCRIPTION: \n \nAuthor and journalist Sarah Murray never gave much thought to what might happen to her remains – until her father died. While he’d always insisted his “organic matter” would have no significance\, he surprised the family by leaving detailed arrangements for the disposal of his ashes. His last request prompted Sarah to explore how – across centuries and cultures – humans have built memorials to their lives. Sarah will share stories\, photos\, and insights from her book Making an Exit: From the Magnificent to the Macabre – How We Dignify the Dead\, which documents her journeys across the world on a very personal quest: seeking inspiration for her own eventual send-off. \n \n “A fascinating travelogue\, but also a personal meditation on loss and fate. Ms. Murray excels in the role of intrepid tour guide.” – The Economist \n \n$10 for members of Green-Wood and BHS / $15 for non-members \n \nClick here for more Morbid Anatomy at Green-Wood events. \n \nClick here for our inclement weather policy. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nMobile users: Please tap here to buy tickets.\n \n\nNot a Member?\nClick here for all of our membership levels and information. \nAlready a Member?\nClick the “Enter promotional code here (members\, use your ID#)” link in the bottom right corner of the ticket box and enter your ID number to apply your ticket discount. SUMMARY:An Inquiry into End-of-Life Experiences: Film Screening and Q&A
DESCRIPTION:This film illuminates occurrences that are rarely shared publicly but remain deeply meaningful to those who experience them. After the screening\, Harry Weil\, Green-Wood’s Manager of Programs\, will join Davis in a discussion about her research and work. \nFive years ago\, artist Leigh Davis had a strange and profound experience at the deathbed of a family member. Since then\, she has worked to create a body of work examining unusual phenomena reported to happen around the time of a death. They include premonitions\, seeing a golden light\, chills or an unexplained warmth\, and sudden lucidity. Davis has recorded over 20 end-of-life experiences through interviews with hospice nurses\, chaplains\, social scientists\, therapists and family members. \nPresented as part of Reimagine End of Life\, a community-wide exploration of death and celebration of life through creativity and conversation. \nTo purchase tickets\, click here.

SUMMARY:In the Parlor: The Final Goodbye Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Take an intimate journey into the lives of three families who have chosen to claim their rightful and active role in caring for dying family members. Each seeks a more personal and fulfilling way to say goodbye. \nThe film challenges us to reflect on the experience of death\, which is so often feared\, denied\, or left unspoken. Heidi Boucher\, filmmaker and home death care guide for over thirty years\, wrote\, directed\, and produced the film. A discussion will follow the screening with Amy Cunningham\, Green-Wood’s death educator. \nPresented as part of Reimagine End of Life\, a community-wide exploration of death and celebration of life through creativity and conversation. \nTo purchase tickets\, click here.
