Come explore and even check out books about nature from the Kidsmobile on the Saturday of the Green-House Grand Opening Weekend Celebration! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCommunity Planting at Jean Shin’s Offering\n\n\n\n10:00am–3:00pmLocation: Main Entrance Meadow \n\n\n\nJoin volunteer gardeners to plant native wildflower seedlings in Green-Wood’s Main Entrance meadow as part of artist Jean Shin’s Offering. This large-scale earthwork\, inspired by traditional Korean burial mounds\, is composed entirely from materials sourced within the Cemetery itself: wood chips\, tree trunks\, and glacial rocks.   \n\n\n\nAs you plant\, you’ll learn how the mound was built and how native wildflowers support pollinators and other wildlife. The seedlings you put in the earth will take root in the burial mound\, bringing color and life to the surface while creating a sustained habitat for wildlife. Created from fallen trees from the Cemetery’s grounds\, the work draws inspiration from Korean tumuli burial mounds and honors cycles of remembrance\, decay\, and renewal. \n\n\n\nTo mark the opening of the installation and the debut weekend of the historic Green-House\, we will begin in the Modern Chapel\, where Shin will introduce the work\, followed by remarks from Gabrielle Gatto\, Manager of Public Programs\, on Green-Wood’s approach to death education and collective remembrance. Participants will then take part in a community ritual led by Mudang Jenn\, a Korean shaman. The afternoon kicks off with a trolley tour of the Cemetery to discover influential figures of the Revolutionary War and distillers who made their mark on the young Republic. Afterward\, the trolley heads to Fort Hamilton Distillery in Industry City where you’ll experience “white” rye straight off the still\, sample whiskey directly from the barrel\, and learn how to bottle your own spirits! April brings pine warblers\, woodpeckers\, and thousands of migrating songbirds among the blooming magnolias and dogwoods\, while herons gather at the glacial ponds. May and early June offer peak birding with over 163 species passing through\, including ruby-throated hummingbirds and wood warblers. Summer sees young red-tailed hawks taking flight\, along with abundant butterflies and dragonflies. This tour is not accessible for those using wheelchairs or other mobility aids and may be difficult for those with balance or other mobility issues. There is no place to sit down during the tour.
