SUMMARY:After the End
DESCRIPTION:A Ritual ABOUT LOSS by Candy Chang and James A. Reeves\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSEPTEMBER 15TH-DECEMBER 6TH\, 10AM-4:30PMHistoric ChapelFree\n\n\n\nDescribe your loss. This simple prompt will be asked of each visitor to After the End\, a new site-specific installation in Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel. Influenced in equal parts by religious ceremonies and science fiction\, artists Candy Chang and James A. Reeves have created a public ritual to contemplate loss in all forms: the loss of loved ones\, relationships\, health\, and worlds we once knew—as well as the practices that have helped us endure. Visitors are invited to share their experience on a scroll and place it upon an illuminated altar. Lit from within\, each response becomes a devotional candle\, and together they form an evolving field of light. Selected reflections will be projected throughout the Chapel\, and visitors can sit in the apse to contemplate the experiences of others as well as their own. After the End offers a modern refuge that reminds us we are not alone as we mourn the end of one reality and enter the next. \n\n\n\nFor over a decade\, Chang and Reeves have collaborated on public rituals to contemplate the human condition. Their installations have been exhibited at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York City\, the Annenberg Space for Photography in Los Angeles\, and the Mural Arts Program in Philadelphia. Inspired by the devotional practices of religion\, the ancient I Ching\, and cyberpunk visions\, Chang and Reeves create public works that facilitate conversations about reckoning with an increasingly alienating world. To learn more\, visit ritualfields.com. \n\n\n\nAfter the End was made possible by a generous grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. \n\n\n\nDue to the overwhelming popular response to After the End\, the installation has now been extended through December 6th! \n\n\n\nFree and open to the public\, no reservations are necessary. Please consider a donation to The Green-Wood Historic Fund so that we can continue to offer free and low-cost programs throughout the year.

SUMMARY:History Happy Hour: Wildlife in the Afterlife
DESCRIPTION:Alongside the religious motifs commonly found in Victorian-era cemeteries—like Green-Wood—are images from the natural world. Animals depicted on memorials all hold their own meanings\, telling us something about the deceased. We’ll take a deep dive into the unexpected\, and sometimes confounding\, symbolism of cemetery beasts. The evening’s focus will be on three symbols—doves\, lambs\, and snakes—while also looking at owls\, peacocks\, squirrels\, dogs\, butterflies\, and other creatures you can discover on cemetery monuments. \n\n\n\nWhile we can’t actually bring the bar or the drinks to you\, we can offer some history on tap! Bring your own beverage–why not try our recommended cocktail of the evening–and raise a glass to the past as we stay connected through our latest series\, History Happy Hour. \n\n\n\n\n\n$9 / $4 for members. A Zoom link and recipe will be emailed the day before the program. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\nGet Tickets on Eventbrite\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNot a Member?\n\n\n\nClick here for all of our membership levels and information. \n\n\n\nAlready a Member?\n\n\n\nClick the gray tickets button to activate the Eventbrite pop-up\, then click Enter promo code. Large numbers of blackbirds\, flycatchers\, sparrows\, vireos\, and swallows will also be passing through. By October\, waterfowl are returning\, and we’ll look for raptors heading south.

SUMMARY:History Happy Hour: Friend or Foe—The Acquaintances of Edgar Allan Poe
DESCRIPTION:Edgar Allan Poe—the American literary master of the macabre—had enough internal conflict in his life to write quite the sensational memoir. Discover a number of Poe’s “frenemies” who ended up at Green-Wood\, such as Elizabeth F. Ellet\, who exposed his correspondence with Frances S. Osgood and accused him of indecency; Rufus Wilmot Griswold\, Poe’s literary executor who succeeded in depicting him as destitute alcoholic; and John Anderson; the tobacco shop owner believed to have offered Poe money to write “The Mystery of Marie Rogȇt.” \n\n\n\n\n\n$9 / $4 for members. Impoverished and in despair\, he wrote a quartet that centers around a towering slow movement\, which depicts a terrified maiden as she begs death to pass her by. \n\n\n\nThe Short Story\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTwo masterpieces\, written nearly two centuries apart\, which both remind us of the beauty and brevity of this life. \n\n\n\n$80\, no member discount available.
