SUMMARY:Rowan Renee: The Perimeter Path
DESCRIPTION:Credit: Rowan Renee\n\n\n\n\n\nJune 3rd-September 4thFree and Open to the Public Daily10am–5pmHistoric Chapel \n\n\n\n\n\nIn-Person Event\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Perimeter Path is an immersive installation in the Historic Chapel by Green-Wood’s 2022 artist in residence\, Rowan Renee. Through extensive onsite research into the public burial lots around the Cemetery’s perimeter and the meticulous crafting of works in marble and glass\, Renee investigates how race and class influence memorialization. \n\n\n\nHistorically\, public lots at Green-Wood offered more affordable burial sites for the working class and poor. Many are located near the Cemetery’s perimeter\, where land was seen as less valuable because of its proximity to city streets. In a historic site like Green-Wood\, known for its stunning and elaborate Victorian era monuments\, Renee shifts visitors’ focus to the erasures and absences in the landscape that point to societal and systemic patterns of inequity.  \n\n\n\nClick here to read more about The Perimeter Path. To learn more about Renee’s creative process\, register for Art and Preservation: An Artist Talk with Rowan Renee (Monday\, July 10th\, 6pm) or To the Perimeter: A Walking Tour with Rowan Renee (Sundays\, July 23rd and September 3rd\, 10am).  \n\n\n\nRowan Renee (b. 1985\, West Palm Beach\, Florida) is a genderqueer artist currently working in Brooklyn\, NY. Their work addresses intergenerational trauma\, gender-based violence and the impact of the criminal legal system through image\, text and installation. They have been exhibited in solo exhibitions at Brooklyn’s Smack Mellon gallery (2021)\, FiveMyles in Crown Heights (2021)\, Aperture Foundation (2017)\, and Pioneer Works (2015). They have received awards from the Aaron Siskind Foundation\, the Harpo Foundation and the Jerome Hill Foundation. You can learn more about their work on their website. \n\n\n\nThe Perimeter Path was made possible with support from the New York State Council on the Arts. \n\n\n\nFree and open to the public\, no reservations are necessary. Please consider a donation to The Green-Wood Historic Fund so that we can continue to offer free and low-cost programs throughout the year.

We’ll discover thousands of songbirds resting before their trip farther north as well as arriving herons and egrets at Green-Wood’s glacial ponds. \n\n\n\nPeak Spring Migration (May to mid-June) \n\n\n\nFrom ruby-throated hummingbirds to over twenty species of colorful wood warblers\, our peak migration tours will feature many of the 163 bird species that have been recorded at Green-Wood during the month of May. Beginning just after sunrise\, we will experience spring’s dawn chorus at the most active time of day for birds. \n\n\n\nSummer Birding (Late June to August) \n\n\n\nIn July we should see the offspring of our resident red-tailed hawk bravely preparing to leave the nest. Warbler songs will be replaced by chirring cicadas and the tweets of fledgling birds. Butterflies and dragonflies are abundant. By late-July\, expect the arrival of the first southbound migrants. \n\n\n\nBefore Purchasing A Ticket\, Please Note:\n\n\n\n\nCOVID-19 Policy: In accordance with New York State and CDC guidance\, masks are optional. SUMMARY:A Day in the Life of a Death Positive Thought Leader
DESCRIPTION:Credit: Jothan Cashero\n\n\n\n\n\nEver wonder what it’s like to live alongside death on a daily basis? What inspires someone to work in the death-care field? Green-Wood’s “A Day in the Life” series brings together industry professionals for lively conversations on the intricacies of their trade and to answer your burning questions about the field of end-of-life care. \n\n\n\nThis evening\, we’ll be joined by an all-star panel of movers and shakers in the death care industry: Melissa Meadow\, Amber Carvaly\, and Sandra Baker. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: Free. Registration required. \n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVirtual Program (see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\nEach of their work has served as a conversation catalyst for the changing landscape of death care\, providing thought-provoking topics for those both in and outside of the field. \n\n\n\nAbout the panelists: \n\n\n\nMelissa Meadow\, also known as the “Modern Mortician” is a licensed funeral director and (non-practicing) embalmer who has been in the death care field since 1996. She is one of five professionals pioneering the first not-for-profit Funeral Home and Conservation Burial Park for People and Pets with The End Foundation.  \n\n\n\nAmber Carvaly has been a licensed funeral director for almost a decade. With Caitlin Doughty\, she co-founded and ran Undertaking LA\, a mortuary in Los Angeles\, where she found herself teaching Kim Kardashian how to do makeup for the dead. As a culinary grief educator\, Carvaly now runs Mortician in the Kitchen which focuses on the role food can play in grief. \n\n\n\nSandra Baker is a licensed funeral director\, a founder at The End Foundation\, and an advocate for end-of-life options. \n\n\n\nFree.
SUMMARY:Birding in Peace
DESCRIPTION:Credit: Evan Rabeck\n\n\n\n\n\nBefore our gates open to the general public\, birding expert Rob Jett leads these peaceful early morning walking tours to discover the many birds that make Green-Wood their home—at least temporarily. Green-Wood’s official birding checklist will be made available to all attendees\, or you can print it in advance here. \n\n\n\nAnd depending when you stop by\, you may see a variety of different species passing through: \n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: $20\, and $15 for members \n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWalking Tour(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\nEarly Spring Migration (April) \n\n\n\nOur April tours will be a feast for the ears and eyes with the trilling song of pine warblers and drumming pronouncements of woodpeckers on newly blossoming trees (including magnolias\, maples\, quinces\, and dogwoods). DESCRIPTION:Various Artists\n\n\n\n\n\nCredit: Kevin Condon\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented in partnership with Death of Classical \n\n\n\nThe Long Story\n\n\n\nThis year marks the 400th anniversary of the death of William Byrd\, one of the great musical mavericks of the Renaissance. When Catholics were being tortured and killed for their beliefs during the Reformation\, Byrd composed three masses for small ensembles\, so that people could worship the old Latin rite in the secrecy of their homes. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: $95 (no member discount) \n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn-Person Event(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\nHe did this not because he was a religious zealot\, but because he wanted to speak out against injustice\, and remind people that belief should be something that unites us\, rather than divides us. \n\n\n\nPart art installation\, part concert\, and part immersive theater\, Secret Byrd springs from the visionary mind of Bill Barclay. The performance will feature 6 singers and 6 instrumentalists spread throughout the Catacombs\, involving audience members in the experience of a forbidden Mass during a time of danger\, and a powerful reminder of the tenuous nature of faith and tolerance. \n\n\n\nThe Short Story\n\n\n\nJoin us for an unforgettable performance that feels as relevant today as it did four centuries ago.

SUMMARY:Secret Byrd
This meditation on the religious persecution that divided Elizabethan England echoes the tragedies we witness unfolding across the globe now\, and offers a plea for peace\, hope and respect. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor more information on this evening’s program and the performers\, visit Death of Classical’s website. \n\n\n\nBEFORE Purchasing Your Tickets\, PLEASE NOTE:\n\n\n\n\nTickets: There is no need to print tickets! Attendees will be checked in by name. \n\n\n\nWhere To Go: Check-in ONLY takes place at the Gothic Arch near the Main Entrance on Fifth Avenue and 25th Street (500 25th Street).\n\n\n\nBe On Time!: Check-in begins 15 minutes before your ticketed start time. We will start with a 45-minute reception at the Modern Chapel to enjoy a whiskey tasting and snacks (all free!)\, and the beauty of the Cemetery\, before the program begins.
