SUMMARY:History Happy Hour: Memorializing Disaster
DESCRIPTION:The Green-Wood Cemetery is replete with memorials to some of the nation’s worst disasters\, from ship sinkings and locomotive collisions\, to fires and aviation crashes. While contemporary memorials typically espouse a contemplative minimalism\, nineteenth-century monuments routinely spectacularized such disasters\, rendering destructive and violent scenes at great expense. Memorializing Disaster will chart the changes in these historic attitudes\, introducing visitors to some of the Cemetery’s most striking and extraordinary memorials\, including those dedicated to the sinking of the SS Arctic (1854) the Brooklyn Theatre Fire (1876)\, and the Park Slope/Miller Field air crash (1960). \n\n\n\nWhile we can’t actually bring the bar or the drinks to you\, we can offer some history on tap! Bring your own beverage–why not try our recommended cocktail of the evening–and raise a glass to the past as we stay connected through our latest series\, History Happy Hour. \n\n\n\n\n\n$9 / $4 for members. A Zoom link and recipe will be in your confirmation email upon registration. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\nGet Tickets on Eventbrite\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNot a Member?\n\n\n\nClick here for all of our membership levels and information. \n\n\n\nAlready a Member?\n\n\n\nClick the gray tickets button to activate the Eventbrite pop-up\, then click Enter promo code. SUMMARY:Honoring Our Veterans: A Memorial Day Tribute
DESCRIPTION:While Memorial Day is often overshadowed by shopping sprees and TV marathons\, its true meaning is not lost in a cemetery—where we honor the people who sacrificed so much to serve this country. In commemoration of the Green-Wood’s thousands of permanent residents who have served in the Armed Forces\, historian Jeff Richman will share a few of the most moving stories of veterans interred here. \n\n\n\nWe’ll see the graves of the Prentiss brothers\, Clifton K. Prentiss and William S. Prentiss\, who fought on opposite sides during the Civil War\, later to be buried side by side. We’ll learn about the lesser-known Mexican War lot\, where recently-installed bronze plaques mark the graves of men whose bodies were retrieved from far-off battlefields\, but whose graves remained  unmarked for more than a century. And we will see the final resting place of a man who fought in the Battle of Brooklyn\, the largest battle of the American Revolution\, which took place across the land that is now a part of The Green-Wood Cemetery. \n\n\n\n\n\n$9 / $4 for members. A Zoom link will be in your confirmation email upon registration. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\nGet Tickets on Eventbrite\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis conversation is part of our series of virtual programs about the history of Green-Wood and its permanent residents\, Zooming in on History. \n\n\n\nNot a Member?\n\n\n\nClick here for all of our membership levels and information. \n\n\n\nAlready a Member?\n\n\n\nClick the gray tickets button to activate the Eventbrite pop-up\, then click Enter promo code. SUMMARY:Spring Plant Walk with the Next Epoch Seed Library
DESCRIPTION:Spring is a great time to meet some of the wild\, weedy\, and resilient plants who make their homes in Green-Wood’s urban meadows! Join Ellie Irons and Anne Percoco of the Next Epoch Seed Library for a socially distanced\, multisensorial walking tour focused on spontaneous urban flora. As we find and interact with individual plants\, we’ll consider the role of plant-human reciprocity in ecosystem function\, and how different management strategies impact our plant neighbors and the many other life forms who rely on them. We’ll also make a visit to the Cemetery’s rewilding experiment “Rethinking Urban Grasslands\,” where we’ll meet some of the vegetal collaborators who are helping make it happen. \n\n\n\nLocation: Check-in takes place in the meadow at the Main Entrance at Fifth Avenue and 25th Street. Look for signage. \n\n\n\n\n\n$25/ $20 for members. There are no paper or e-tickets. Attendees will be checked in by name. SUMMARY:Birding in Peace
DESCRIPTION:Courtesy of Jennifer Kepler.\n\n\n\nBefore our gates open to the general public\, birding expert Rob Jett leads these peaceful Sunday morning walking tours to discover the many birds that call Green-Wood home. Green-Wood’s official birding checklist is available to pick up from the security guard at the Main Entrance on 25th Street or to print here. \n\n\n\nPlease note: All walking tours traverse hilly and at times uneven terrain. Comfortable footwear is suggested.  \n\n\n\n\n\nTickets are $20/$15 for members. There are no paper or e-tickets. We’ll discover thousands of songbirds resting before their trip farther north as well as arriving herons and egrets at Green-Wood’s glacial ponds. \n\n\n\nPeak Spring Migration \n\n\n\nFrom ruby-throated hummingbirds to over twenty species of colorful wood warblers\, our peak migration tours will feature many of the 163 bird species that have been recorded at Green-Wood during the month of May. Beginning just after sunrise\, we will experience spring’s dawn chorus at the most active time of day for birds. \n\n\n\nSummer Birding \n\n\n\nIn July we should see the offspring of our resident red-tailed hawk bravely preparing to leave the nest. Warbler songs will be replaced by chirring cicadas and the tweets of fledgling birds. Butterflies and dragonflies are abundant. By late-July\, expect the arrival of the first southbound migrants. \n\n\n\n\n\nNot a Member?\n\n\n\nClick here for all of our membership levels and information. \n\n\n\nAlready a Member?\n\n\n\nClick the gray tickets button to activate the Eventbrite pop-up\, then click Enter promo code.
