SUMMARY:Decolonizing Death Studies
DESCRIPTION:Gerard Fortune\, Gede (Ghede\, Guede)\n\n\n\nFor those not readily familiar\, Death Studies (or Death Education) can be defined as the interdisciplinary study of death\, dying\, burial\, and last-rites rituals. In all its variations\, it reflects the life of societies—their political systems\, social customs\, norms\, values\, and religious beliefs. This evening’s presentation\, led by Dr. Kami Fletcher\, focuses on how systems of power and privilege were passed through deathways (ways of dying which can also include burial practices\, funerals\, mourning\, and body care)\, either by force\, coercion\, or assimilation. She will highlight why it is imperative to recognize how European colonialism has marginalized\, trivialized\, and outright negated the deathways and death practices of nations\, cultures\, and persons deemed ‘other’. \n\n\n\nDr. Fletcher is an Associate professor of American & African American History at Albright College. She recently served as editor and contributor to Till Death Do Us Part: American Ethnic Cemeteries as Borders Uncrossed. She is currently co-authoring First 100 Years of Black Undertaking in Baltimore and co-editing Southern Cemeteries\, Imprints of Southern Culture. Dr. Fletcher serves as the president for The Collective for Radical Death Studies.  \n\n\n\nThis program is presented as part of a new Death Education series at Green-Wood\, Death & Us. Death is the great universal\, but the ways in which the dead are grieved and memorialized vary across racial\, cultural\, and economic divides in the United States. This series brings together a myriad of voices—from historians and preservationists to activists and funeral practitioners—to explore how diverse communities mourn and commemorate the departed from our nation’s founding to today. \n\n\n\n\n\nFree\, suggested donation $10. Please consider a donation to Green-Wood when reserving your ticket. Your donation will help ensure that we can continue to provide engaging and thought provoking programs in death education at little or no cost to you. A Zoom link will be in your confirmation email upon registration.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\nGet Tickets on Eventbrite

Green-Wood’s official birding checklist is available to pick up from the security guard at the Main Entrance on 25th Street or to print here. \n\n\n\nPlease note: All walking tours traverse hilly and at times uneven terrain. Comfortable footwear is suggested.  \n\n\n\n\n\nTickets are $20/$15 for members. There are no paper or e-tickets. Attendees will be checked in by name. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\nGet Tickets on Eventbrite\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEarly-Spring Migration \n\n\n\nOur April tours will be a feast for the ears and eyes with the trilling song of pine warblers and drumming pronouncements of woodpeckers on newly blossoming trees (including magnolias\, maples\, quinces\, and dogwoods). We’ll discover thousands of songbirds resting before their trip farther north as well as arriving herons and egrets at Green-Wood’s glacial ponds. \n\n\n\nPeak Spring Migration \n\n\n\nFrom ruby-throated hummingbirds to over twenty species of colorful wood warblers\, our peak migration tours will feature many of the 163 bird species that have been recorded at Green-Wood during the month of May. SUMMARY:Mount Auburn and Green-Wood Cemeteries: Their Historians in Conversation\, Part 2

SUMMARY:A Night of Victorian Tragedy: LIVE
DESCRIPTION:The Victorians knew a thing or two about tragedy—in fact\, they seemed to almost revel in tales of disaster and doom. And a Victorian-era cemetery\, like Green-Wood\, has an abundance of these heartbreaking stories. Three years ago\, four storytellers battled it out\, and it was the harrowing shipwreck of the Lexington\, which caught fire and sank in the icy waters of the Long Island Sound in January\, 1840\, that won the title of “Most Tragic Victorian Tale.”  \n\n\n\nGet ready for round two! Expert storyteller\, writer\, and comic Tara Clancy hosts this not to be missed event\, where you (yes you!)\, the audience members\, vote on which Victorian tale is to be crowned as the most tragic. Four aficionados of sadness will try to convince you that theirs is the most heartbreaking. Throughout the night\, you can try your luck at Victorian-era trivia with some great Green-Wood prizes for the most knowledgeable (or just plain lucky). Be sure to bring tissues. Fainting couches not provided. \n\n\n\nArrive at the time on your ticket. The event begins at 8:30pm.  Attendees are expected to follow all necessary health and safety protocols as directed by the Cemetery’s staff and volunteers.  \n\n\n\n\n\n$35 / $30 for members. Beginning just after sunrise\, we will experience spring’s dawn chorus at the most active time of day for birds. \n\n\n\nSummer Birding \n\n\n\nIn July we should see the offspring of our resident red-tailed hawk bravely preparing to leave the nest. Warbler songs will be replaced by chirring cicadas and the tweets of fledgling birds. Butterflies and dragonflies are abundant. By late-July\, expect the arrival of the first southbound migrants. \n\n\n\n\n\nNot a Member?\n\n\n\nClick here for all of our membership levels and information. \n\n\n\nAlready a Member?\n\n\n\nClick the gray tickets button to activate the Eventbrite pop-up\, then click Enter promo code. DESCRIPTION:Great masters of many traditions have advised that we can live our lives more fully knowing some day we will die. Barbara Becker’s highly anticipated memoir Heartwood: The Art of Living with the End in Mind reminds us of this cornerstone belief of death literacy. \n\n\n\nThe term “heartwood” refers to the core of a tree—the part that is no longer living\, but supports the newer growth rings that surround it. To Barbara\, it’s “a reminder to embrace the inseparability of life and death… a message of wholeness.” \n\n\n\nJoin us for this special virtual conversation with the author and her beloved Zen teacher Robert Chodo Campbell as they navigate the broad questions of the paradoxical marriage of life and death\, and delve into the meaningful personal stories Barbara shares in her book.  \n\n\n\n\n\nHeartwood is available for sale through our Brooklyn-based neighbor\, Uncommon Goods. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP Here\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n“In Heartwood\, Barbara Becker inspires us to follow our curiosity into a world that is both universal and a source of our uniqueness. And what could be better than that?”– Gloria Steinem \n\n\n\nBarbara Becker is a writer and ordained interfaith minister who has dedicated more than twenty-five years to partnering with human rights advocates around the world in pursuit of peace and interreligious understanding. She has worked with the United Nations\, Human Rights First\, the Ms. Foundation for Women\, and the Grameen Bank of Bangladesh\, and has participated in a delegation of Zen Peacemakers and Lakota elders in the sacred Black Hills of South Dakota. She has sat with hundreds of people at the end of their lives and views each as a teacher.  \n\n\n\nSensei Robert Chodo Campbell\, is a co-founder of the New York Zen Center for contemplative Care\, —a non-profit organization that focuses on the teaching of Zen and Buddhist practice with the goal to make them more accessible to people all around the world. The center delivers contemplative approaches to care through education\, personal caregiving\, and meditation practice. Chodo is a dynamic\, grounded\, and visionary leader and teacher: he has traveled extensively throughout the United States instructing in various institutions. Sixty-thousand people listen to his podcasts each year. His passion lies in bereavement counseling and advocating for change in the way our healthcare institutions work with the dying.

SUMMARY:Death Café
DESCRIPTION:The Death Café is inspired by the centuries-old European salon (or café)\, an informal gathering to discuss philosophical\, political or scientific ideas. In 2011\, British entrepreneur Jon Underwood brought this concept to discussions of the most universal topic of all: death. Underwood’s intention was to provide an opportunity to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” Today\, there are over 4\,400 Death Cafes in 26 countries around the world. \nGreen-Wood is proud to host monthly gatherings of the Death Café here in our beautiful\, modern chapel. Amy Cunningham\, death educator and creator of the Brooklyn-based blog TheInspiredFuneral.com\, invites participants to share their thoughts and feelings on death. It’s an opportunity for safe and open exchanges\, without an agenda. Tea and light snacks are provided. \n“A place for people to discuss our inevitable fate.” – Gothamist \n“It’s a reversal for American culture\, which for a long time has shied away from these conversations.” – Village Voice \n“[E]ncouraging people to talk about death more freely and naturally.” – Haaretz \nFree to attend\, RSVP recommended. Please register using the Eventbrite box below. \nThis program takes place in our Modern Chapel just to the right after passing through the Gothic Arches at the main entrance. All events will take place rain or shine. Click here for our inclement weather policy. \n \nMobile users: Please tap here for free registration.\n

SUMMARY:History Happy Hour: Green-Wood’s Magnificent Monuments
DESCRIPTION:Over the course of the nineteenth century\, Green-Wood’s management codified an extraordinary range of guidelines for future permanent residents and their families\, including the need to avoid “tame and uninteresting” and “injurious or offensive structure(s).” The Cemetery’s open-air archive of diverse architectural and sculptural styles—from neo-Gothic to Egyptian Revival and beyond—is a testament to clients’ competitiveness\, the city’s changing tastes\, and the desire to leave one’s mark. Learn more about some of the Cemetery’s most extraordinary and prodigious resting sites\, including those of seventeen-year-old Charlotte Canda\, aspiring Mayoral candidate John Anderson\, and John Matthews—America’s “soda fountain king.” \n\n\n\nWhile we can’t actually bring the bar or the drinks to you\, we can offer some history on tap! Bring your own beverage–why not try our recommended cocktail of the evening–and raise a glass to the past as we stay connected through our latest series\, History Happy Hour. \n\n\n\n\n\n$9 / $4 for members.
