SUMMARY:Heartwood: An Evening on the Art of Living with the End in Mind
DESCRIPTION:Great masters of many traditions have advised that we can live our lives more fully knowing some day we will die. Barbara Becker’s highly anticipated memoir Heartwood: The Art of Living with the End in Mind reminds us of this cornerstone belief of death literacy. \n\n\n\nThe term “heartwood” refers to the core of a tree—the part that is no longer living\, but supports the newer growth rings that surround it. To Barbara\, it’s “a reminder to embrace the inseparability of life and death… a message of wholeness.” \n\n\n\nJoin us for this special virtual conversation with the author and her beloved Zen teacher Robert Chodo Campbell as they navigate the broad questions of the paradoxical marriage of life and death\, and delve into the meaningful personal stories Barbara shares in her book.  \n\n\n\n\n\nHeartwood is available for sale through our Brooklyn-based neighbor\, Uncommon Goods. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP Here\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n“In Heartwood\, Barbara Becker inspires us to follow our curiosity into a world that is both universal and a source of our uniqueness. And what could be better than that?”– Gloria Steinem \n\n\n\nBarbara Becker is a writer and ordained interfaith minister who has dedicated more than twenty-five years to partnering with human rights advocates around the world in pursuit of peace and interreligious understanding. She has worked with the United Nations\, Human Rights First\, the Ms. Foundation for Women\, and the Grameen Bank of Bangladesh\, and has participated in a delegation of Zen Peacemakers and Lakota elders in the sacred Black Hills of South Dakota. She has sat with hundreds of people at the end of their lives and views each as a teacher.  \n\n\n\nSensei Robert Chodo Campbell\, is a co-founder of the New York Zen Center for contemplative Care\, —a non-profit organization that focuses on the teaching of Zen and Buddhist practice with the goal to make them more accessible to people all around the world. The center delivers contemplative approaches to care through education\, personal caregiving\, and meditation practice. Chodo is a dynamic\, grounded\, and visionary leader and teacher: he has traveled extensively throughout the United States instructing in various institutions. Sixty-thousand people listen to his podcasts each year. His passion lies in bereavement counseling and advocating for change in the way our healthcare institutions work with the dying.

SUMMARY:Death Café
DESCRIPTION:The Death Café is inspired by the centuries-old European salon (or café)\, an informal gathering to discuss philosophical\, political or scientific ideas. In 2011\, British entrepreneur Jon Underwood brought this concept to discussions of the most universal topic of all: death. Underwood’s intention was to provide an opportunity to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” Today\, there are over 4\,400 Death Cafes in 26 countries around the world. \nGreen-Wood is proud to host monthly gatherings of the Death Café here in our beautiful\, modern chapel. Amy Cunningham\, death educator and creator of the Brooklyn-based blog TheInspiredFuneral.com\, invites participants to share their thoughts and feelings on death. It’s an opportunity for safe and open exchanges\, without an agenda. Tea and light snacks are provided. \n“A place for people to discuss our inevitable fate.” – Gothamist \n“It’s a reversal for American culture\, which for a long time has shied away from these conversations.” – Village Voice \n“[E]ncouraging people to talk about death more freely and naturally.” – Haaretz \nFree to attend\, RSVP recommended. Please register using the Eventbrite box below. \nThis program takes place in our Modern Chapel just to the right after passing through the Gothic Arches at the main entrance. All events will take place rain or shine. Click here for our inclement weather policy. \n \nMobile users: Please tap here for free registration.\n

SUMMARY:History Happy Hour: Green-Wood’s Magnificent Monuments
DESCRIPTION:Over the course of the nineteenth century\, Green-Wood’s management codified an extraordinary range of guidelines for future permanent residents and their families\, including the need to avoid “tame and uninteresting” and “injurious or offensive structure(s).” The Cemetery’s open-air archive of diverse architectural and sculptural styles—from neo-Gothic to Egyptian Revival and beyond—is a testament to clients’ competitiveness\, the city’s changing tastes\, and the desire to leave one’s mark. Learn more about some of the Cemetery’s most extraordinary and prodigious resting sites\, including those of seventeen-year-old Charlotte Canda\, aspiring Mayoral candidate John Anderson\, and John Matthews—America’s “soda fountain king.” \n\n\n\nWhile we can’t actually bring the bar or the drinks to you\, we can offer some history on tap! Bring your own beverage–why not try our recommended cocktail of the evening–and raise a glass to the past as we stay connected through our latest series\, History Happy Hour. \n\n\n\n\n\n$9 / $4 for members. A Zoom link and recipe will be in your confirmation email upon registration. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\nGet Tickets on Eventbrite\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNot a Member?\n\n\n\nClick here for all of our membership levels and information. \n\n\n\nAlready a Member?\n\n\n\nClick the gray tickets button to activate the Eventbrite pop-up\, then click Enter promo code. DESCRIPTION:Every object tells a story—and this one-of-a kind embroidered piece in the collections of The New-York Historical Society is no different. In 2011\, Margaret K. Hofer\, now vice president and museum director at N-YHS was contacted by an antiques dealer who had come across a rare find: a sampler (a demonstration of embroidery technique) made by fifteen-year-old Rosena Disery in 1820\, while a student at New York’s African Free School. Hofer virtually joins Green-Wood Historian Jeff Richman\, to discuss how this one object helped to uncover the fascinating life story of Rosena (interred at Green-Wood as Rosanna Van Dyke) and her family\, who\, against the odds\, prospered in nineteenth-century New York City. \n\n\n\nThis conversation is part of our series of virtual programs about the history of Green-Wood and its permanent residents\, Zooming in on History. \n\n\n\n\n\n$9 / $4 for members. SUMMARY:Sowing the Future: The Next Epoch Seed Library
DESCRIPTION:NESL’s Lawn Lab at Wheaton College for the exhibition In the Weeds: Art and the Natural World\, Fall 2019. Photo by Elizabeth Hoy. \n\n\n\nPresenters: Ellie Irons and Anne Percoco\n\n\n\nThe Next Epoch Seed Library (NESL) is an artist-run institution focused on collecting\, saving\, and sharing the seeds of wild urban plants (aka weeds). From sculptural installations and workshops to zines and rewilding interventions\, they work to create connections between plants and people in landscapes heavily impacted by human activity. In this talk\, Ellie Irons and Anne Percoco will discuss how they founded and developed NESL\, as well as their recent projects like the Deep Time Seed Burial series and ongoing Lawn (Re)Disturbance Laboratory. Through these experiential\, public-facing projects\, the NESL centers our plant neighbors as key participants in the struggle for ecologically just urban habitats. Artists Ellie Irons and Anne Percoco founded NESL in 2016. Based in Jersey City and Brooklyn\, the project also has a semi-permanent home in Troy\, New York at the Sanctuary for Independent Media’s NATURE Lab. \n\n\n\nThis conversation is part of our series of virtual programs about the horticulture and wildlife of Green-Wood\, Zooming in on Nature.  \n\n\n\n\n\n$5/Free for members\, RSVP required. SUMMARY:Green-Wood’s Hidden Treasures: A Horticulturist’s View
DESCRIPTION:Green-Wood is an immense place\, and a visit to our grounds can be overwhelming. What should you see? What direction should you go in? Don’t worry\, we’ve got you covered! This new series of tours\, led by the Cemetery’s expert staff\, provides a behind-the-scenes exploration of art\, history\, and nature.  \n\n\n\nDid you know that Green-Wood is a Level III accredited arboretum? For this morning’s walking tour\, Green-Wood’s Director of Horticulture Joseph Charap will give you a behind-the-scenes look into the inner-workings of the arboretum. How does the horticulture department manage and care for Green-Wood’s natural landscape? What goes into tree selection and preservation? How can we steward our landscape for the future? Joseph will answer these questions and more as he fills you in on recent research initiatives\, special projects\, and landscape renovations—including the partnership with Cornell University to leverage urban grasslands in the fight against climate change.  \n\n\n\nJoseph has worked at Green-Wood since 2014\, championing the plants of Green-Wood (both great and small) as we strive to maintain a diverse and sustainable urban arboretum. \n\n\n\nNotice: This tour begins and ends from the Main Entrance located at 25th Street and Fifth Avenue. \n\n\n\n\n\n$30/ $25 for members. SUMMARY:Birding in Peace
DESCRIPTION:Courtesy of Jennifer Kepler.\n\n\n\nBefore our gates open to the general public\, birding expert Rob Jett leads these peaceful Sunday morning walking tours to discover the many birds that call Green-Wood home. Green-Wood’s official birding checklist is available to pick up from the security guard at the Main Entrance on 25th Street or to print here. \n\n\n\nPlease note: All walking tours traverse hilly and at times uneven terrain. Comfortable footwear is suggested.  \n\n\n\n\n\nTickets are $20/$15 for members. There are no paper or e-tickets. We’ll discover thousands of songbirds resting before their trip farther north as well as arriving herons and egrets at Green-Wood’s glacial ponds. \n\n\n\nPeak Spring Migration \n\n\n\nFrom ruby-throated hummingbirds to over twenty species of colorful wood warblers\, our peak migration tours will feature many of the 163 bird species that have been recorded at Green-Wood during the month of May. Beginning just after sunrise\, we will experience spring’s dawn chorus at the most active time of day for birds. \n\n\n\nSummer Birding \n\n\n\nIn July we should see the offspring of our resident red-tailed hawk bravely preparing to leave the nest. Warbler songs will be replaced by chirring cicadas and the tweets of fledgling birds. Butterflies and dragonflies are abundant. By late-July\, expect the arrival of the first southbound migrants. \n\n\n\n\n\nNot a Member?\n\n\n\nClick here for all of our membership levels and information. \n\n\n\nAlready a Member?\n\n\n\nClick the gray tickets button to activate the Eventbrite pop-up\, then click Enter promo code. SUMMARY:History Happy Hour: Memorializing Disaster
DESCRIPTION:The Green-Wood Cemetery is replete with memorials to some of the nation’s worst disasters\, from ship sinkings and locomotive collisions\, to fires and aviation crashes. While contemporary memorials typically espouse a contemplative minimalism\, nineteenth-century monuments routinely spectacularized such disasters\, rendering destructive and violent scenes at great expense. Memorializing Disaster will chart the changes in these historic attitudes\, introducing visitors to some of the Cemetery’s most striking and extraordinary memorials\, including those dedicated to the sinking of the SS Arctic (1854) the Brooklyn Theatre Fire (1876)\, and the Park Slope/Miller Field air crash (1960). \n\n\n\nWhile we can’t actually bring the bar or the drinks to you\, we can offer some history on tap! SUMMARY:Honoring Our Veterans: A Memorial Day Tribute
DESCRIPTION:While Memorial Day is often overshadowed by shopping sprees and TV marathons\, its true meaning is not lost in a cemetery—where we honor the people who sacrificed so much to serve this country. In commemoration of the Green-Wood’s thousands of permanent residents who have served in the Armed Forces\, historian Jeff Richman will share a few of the most moving stories of veterans interred here. \n\n\n\nWe’ll see the graves of the Prentiss brothers\, Clifton K. Prentiss and William S. Prentiss\, who fought on opposite sides during the Civil War\, later to be buried side by side. We’ll learn about the lesser-known Mexican War lot\, where recently-installed bronze plaques mark the graves of men whose bodies were retrieved from far-off battlefields\, but whose graves remained  unmarked for more than a century. And we will see the final resting place of a man who fought in the Battle of Brooklyn\, the largest battle of the American Revolution\, which took place across the land that is now a part of The Green-Wood Cemetery. \n\n\n\n\n\n$9 / $4 for members. SUMMARY:Spring Plant Walk with the Next Epoch Seed Library
DESCRIPTION:Spring is a great time to meet some of the wild\, weedy\, and resilient plants who make their homes in Green-Wood’s urban meadows! Join Ellie Irons and Anne Percoco of the Next Epoch Seed Library for a socially distanced\, multisensorial walking tour focused on spontaneous urban flora. As we find and interact with individual plants\, we’ll consider the role of plant-human reciprocity in ecosystem function\, and how different management strategies impact our plant neighbors and the many other life forms who rely on them. We’ll also make a visit to the Cemetery’s rewilding experiment “Rethinking Urban Grasslands\,” where we’ll meet some of the vegetal collaborators who are helping make it happen. \n\n\n\nLocation: Check-in takes place in the meadow at the Main Entrance at Fifth Avenue and 25th Street.
