SUMMARY:A View to Die For: Community Painting Day
DESCRIPTION:Photo of Leola Bermanzohn by Ben Hider\n\n\n\n\n\nInspired by the grand tradition of painting in the outdoors (or as the French say “en plein air”)\, the Guild of Adventure Painters hosts an afternoon of community creativity amidst the beauty of Green-Wood. Whether you are an expert or novice\, a painter\, sketcher\, or master of crayons\, everyone is welcome to explore their artistic impulses and talents amid the rolling hills and historic monuments of the Cemetery. Artists from the Guild will be on hand to offer advice\, guidance\, and conversation. This is not a class\, but it is an opportunity to share your talents with others free of judgment or critique. Join for the whole afternoon\, or pop in for an hour. All ages are welcome. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: Free. Registration recommended. \n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn-Person Event(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Guild of Adventure Painters is an exploratory painting residency founded in 2018 by Johnny DeFeo and Aaron Zulpo. Each year Adventure Painting takes a group of invited studio artists on a journey to a beautiful location. The focus is on outdoor exploration\, building connections with fellow artists and art institutions along the way. Adventure Painting is set up as a plein air painting adventure; residents are encouraged to make landscape paintings but can interact with the landscape however they see fit throughout the course of the residency. Adventure Painting provides artists an opportunity to travel and explore the American landscape with the hope that it helps advance each artist’s studio practice. \n\n\n\nFree. Reservation is recommended so that we may gauge attendance. Please consider a donation to Green-Wood when reserving your ticket. Your donation will help ensure that we can continue to provide engaging and thought-provoking programs at little or no cost to you. \n\n\n\nBefore Reserving Your Spot\, Please Note:\n\n\n\nIn September\, a map will be provided of possible locations to join the group! Stay tuned! Attendees must bring their own art supplies and ways to get comfortable (chair\, blanket\, easel\, etc).A limited number of art supplies will be offered on a first come\, first served basis. Attendees are strongly encouraged to wear suitable footwear as access to the event involves walking up hills or stairs\, as well as grassy and uneven terrain.

SUMMARY:Lost in the Woods: Grief and the “Ennuipocalypse”
DESCRIPTION:Climate change is a heavy topic. Most of us are inundated with stories of its effects daily when we turn on the nightly news or scroll through headlines on social media. But how can we respond—physically\, emotionally\, or even artistically? \n\n\n\nFor photographer Julianne Nash\, it’s through her camera that she expresses her grief over this loss\, trauma\, and environmental collapse. Her work focuses on the excruciatingly slow pace of climate collapse through a geological time scale (what is often called Ennuipocalypse or Slowpocalypse). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: Free. Registration required. \n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVirtual EventA Zoom link will be in your confirmation email upon registration.\n\n\n\n\n\nIn her most recent series of photographic collages\, Julianne depicts the crisis on a micro-scale\, focusing on the subtle signs of climate collapse throughout the Northeastern US. As she grieves the loss of ecosystems\, Julianne creates surrealist collages that present her own grief within the changing landscape.  \n\n\n\nJulianne Nash is a New York City-based artist. She received her MFA in Photography Video and Related Media from the School of Visual Arts. She received her BFA in Photography from Massachusetts College of Art and Design with Departmental Honors. Julianne’s current work utilizes algorithmic digital collage techniques in combination with traditional compositing to create densely layered landscapes. \n\n\n\nThis program is part of Green-Wood’s Climate Week programming\, a series focusing on the grief and anxieties associated with climate change and how scientists\, artists\, and Cemetery workers can make a lasting impact. \n\n\n\nFree. SUMMARY:Death Café
DESCRIPTION:The Death Café is inspired by the centuries-old European salon (or café)\, an informal gathering to discuss philosophical\, political or scientific ideas. In 2011\, British entrepreneur Jon Underwood brought this concept to discussions of the most universal topic of all: death. Amy Cunningham\, death educator and creator of the Brooklyn-based blog TheInspiredFuneral.com\, invites participants to share their thoughts and feelings on death. It’s an opportunity for safe and open exchanges\, without an agenda. Tea and light snacks are provided. \n“A place for people to discuss our inevitable fate.” – Gothamist \n“It’s a reversal for American culture\, which for a long time has shied away from these conversations.” – Village Voice \n“[E]ncouraging people to talk about death more freely and naturally.” – Haaretz \nFree to attend\, RSVP recommended.
