SUMMARY:Why BIPOC Horticulture Knowledge Matters
DESCRIPTION:BIPOC (Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color) horticulturists’ understanding of plants and nature is often grounded in different perspectives than the institutions in which they work here in the United States. Intentionally or unintentionally\, both public and private gardens currently fail to integrate BIPOC expertise and knowledge in their garden operations. How can institutions integrate this knowledge and create healthier work environments? \n\n\n\nThis program will be led by Wambui Ippolito\, a landscape designer\, horticulturist\, and graduate of the New York Botanical Garden’s School of Professional Horticulture. She develops programming for museums\, public gardens\, and parks exploring the broader context of horticulture\, focusing on the intersections between migration\, design\, history\, culture and science. She lectures both in the US and internationally. In her former career\, Wambui worked as a Development & Democracy Consultant at international organizations both in the US and around the world. She is multilingual\, fluent in five languages. Wambui is also the founder of the BIPOC Hort Group (@bipochort on instagram)\, a multicultural professional organization with membership from the US\, Asia\, Africa\, Latin America\, and the Caribbean. \n\n\n\nThis conversation is part of our new series of virtual programs about the horticulture and wildlife of Green-Wood\, Zooming in on Nature.  \n\n\n\n\n\n$5/Free for members\, RSVP required. A Zoom link will be in your confirmation email upon registration. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\nBuy Tickets on Eventbrite\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNot a Member?\n\n\n\nClick here for all of our membership levels and information. \n\n\n\nAlready a Member?\n\n\n\nClick the gray tickets button to activate the Eventbrite pop-up\, then click Enter promo code. SUMMARY:Death Café
DESCRIPTION:The Death Café is inspired by the centuries-old European salon (or café)\, an informal gathering to discuss philosophical\, political or scientific ideas. In 2011\, British entrepreneur Jon Underwood brought this concept to discussions of the most universal topic of all: death. Underwood’s intention was to provide an opportunity to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” Today\, there are over 4\,400 Death Cafes in 26 countries around the world. \nGreen-Wood is proud to host monthly gatherings of the Death Café here in our beautiful\, modern chapel. Amy Cunningham\, death educator and creator of the Brooklyn-based blog TheInspiredFuneral.com\, invites participants to share their thoughts and feelings on death. It’s an opportunity for safe and open exchanges\, without an agenda. Tea and light snacks are provided. \n“A place for people to discuss our inevitable fate.” – Gothamist \n“It’s a reversal for American culture\, which for a long time has shied away from these conversations.” – Village Voice \n“[E]ncouraging people to talk about death more freely and naturally.” – Haaretz \nFree to attend\, RSVP recommended. Please register using the Eventbrite box below. \nThis program takes place in our Modern Chapel just to the right after passing through the Gothic Arches at the main entrance. All events will take place rain or shine. Click here for our inclement weather policy. \n \nMobile users: Please tap here for free registration.\n

SUMMARY:Urban Oases: Green-Wood and Central Park
DESCRIPTION:New Yorkers have long desired to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. Their first chance came in 1838 when Green-Wood opened far off in the city of Brooklyn\, and quickly became a major tourist destination. Twenty years later came Central Park\, designed by masterminds Olmsted and Vaux\, which offered its own unique landscape and recreational experiences.  \n\n\n\nBut what is the relationship between Green-Wood and Central Park? The Cemetery was\, in many ways\, the inspiration and model for the park. Central Park Conservancy Historian Marie Warsh joins Green-Wood Historian Jeff Richman to talk about these two iconic New York landmarks\, which share design elements\, common artisans\, and more. \n\n\n\nThis conversation is part of our series of virtual programs about the history of Green-Wood and its permanent residents\, Zooming in on History. \n\n\n\n\n\n$9 / $4 for members. A Zoom link will be in your confirmation email upon registration. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\nBuy Tickets on Eventbrite\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNot a Member?\n\n\n\nClick here for all of our membership levels and information. \n\n\n\nAlready a Member?\n\n\n\nClick the gray tickets button to activate the Eventbrite pop-up\, then click Enter promo code. SUMMARY:Birding in Peace
DESCRIPTION:Before our gates open to the general public\, birding expert Rob Jett leads these peaceful Sunday morning walking tours to discover the many birds that call Green-Wood home. \n\n\n\nJust because it’s winter\, doesn’t mean that there aren’t interesting birds to discover in Green-Wood. For some bird species that migrate south after the breeding season\, Brooklyn is their Miami during the cold months. Spend the early morning exploring the cemetery\, looking for overwintering waterfowl\, nuthatches\, woodpeckers\, sparrows\, finches and any half-hardy birds that decided to stick around. By February we’ll see some of the early north-bound birds beginning to trickle back into the area. \n\n\n\nAll walks are at a slow pace on easy to moderate terrain\, but proper\, close toed footwear is suggested. Green-Wood’s official birding checklist is available to pick up from the security guard at the Main Entrance on 25th Street or as a printable PDF here. \n\n\n\n\n\nTickets are $20/$15 for members. There are no paper or e-tickets. SUMMARY:Future of the Funeral: Memorializing Loved Ones during COVID-19
DESCRIPTION:What can we glean from the grief of the great American military battles\, the AIDS Epidemic\, 9-11\, and Sandy Hook that is applicable to these uncertain days of the novel coronavirus? A great deal\, as it happens. While commemorative flags\, quilts\, wreaths\, home altars\, obituaries\, grave markers\, scrap books\, and stories are as relevant as ever\, technology has a greater role in loving remembrance and life story preservation. Also\, even in winter\, we are safely holding more funerals in the great outdoors. Join death educator and funeral director Amy Cunningham for a conversation on how to preserve the legacy of a loved one who has died during the COVID-19 period. From Zoom memorials to remembrances in public spaces\, earth altars and more\, we’ll explore how older customs merge with new possibilities. \n\n\n\n\n\nFree. A Zoom link will be in your confirmation email upon registration. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\nBuy Tickets on Eventbrite

SUMMARY:What Happens When No One Can Pay for the Funeral?
DESCRIPTION:Death is universal\, but its aftermath can be difficult—particularly when no one has money for a funeral. What happens to those who die with no family and no money? Social anthropologist Sally Raudon has traveled the world\, exploring that issue across many cultures. Join Raudon and Green-Wood Historian Jeff Richman for a discussion about how the bodies of the indigent are interred throughout the world\, comparing such New York City burials to those in the United Kingdom\, New Zealand\, Ghana\, Bali\, etc. She will also touch on excess mortality and how that is being handled around the world. \n\n\n\nSally Raudon is a PhD Candidate in the Department of Social Anthropology at St. John’s College of the University of Cambridge in England; her doctoral work focuses on what happens to New Yorkers who can’t afford a funeral. She has visited many diverse cultures\, exploring how the bodies of the indigent are interred. \n\n\n\n\n\n$9 / $4 for members. SUMMARY:History Happy Hour: Forever Young—The Canda Monument
DESCRIPTION:Life after death takes on a new meaning when discussing the Charlotte Canda monument and the cult fascination that has gripped Green-Wood’s visitors since it was erected. Often the poster child for Green-Wood in early guidebooks from the mid-1800s\, the Canda gravesite is exemplary not only for its ornate decoration\, but also for the tragic story it tells. Join us for this special History Happy Hour as we explore the monument’s beautiful design as well as investigate the story behind Green-Wood’s “It Girl.” \n\n\n\nWhile we can’t actually bring the bar or the drinks to you\, we can offer some history on tap! Bring your own beverage–why not try our recommended cocktail of the evening–and raise a glass to the past as we stay connected through our latest series\, History Happy Hour. \n\n\n\n\n\n$9 / $4 for members.
SUMMARY:Winter Fungi Walk
DESCRIPTION:While the colorful trees and migrating birds of Green-Wood get lots of buzz\, visitors might not know about the bounty of mushrooms sprouting throughout the Cemetery’s 478 verdant acres. Join Sigrid Jakob and Ethan Crenson\, longtime members of the New York Mycological Society\, for a socially distanced mushroom walk to discover Green-Wood’s winter fungi. Not only do some edible mushrooms pop up during thaws\, but other types of fungi\, like polypores\, jellies\, and crust fungi flourish in the colder weather. Tiny ascomycetes\, or “dots on sticks\,” are an often overlooked but ubiquitous fungi that\, though difficult to identify\, are fascinating to study. Learn basics of mushroom identification\, habitat\, and season. Come prepared for cold weather and off-road walking.  \n\n\n\nMeet at the Main Entrance Gate by Fifth Avenue and 25th Street. \n\n\n\n\n\n$25 / $20 for members. There are no paper or e-tickets. SUMMARY:Zooming in on Fungi: Bumps on Sticks and Other Ascomycetes
DESCRIPTION:Credit: Matthew Wills\, via iNaturalist.org\n\n\n\nGreen-Wood provides a rich habitat for mushrooms and other fungi throughout the year. In the summer the charismatic mycorrhizal mushrooms (don’t worry\, we will fill you in on what that means) flourish among the old oaks and pines. But what about in the winter? Ethan Crenson and Sigrid Jakob\, both longtime members of the New York Mycological Society\, will introduce you to the cold-weather mushrooms that appear during this time of the year (like the fascinating spore-shooting ascomycetes). Come explore the overlooked\, and often tiny\, fungi that play an important role in our ecosystem.   \n\n\n\nThis conversation is part of our new series of virtual programs about the horticulture and wildlife of Green-Wood\, Zooming in on Nature.  \n\n\n\n\n\n$5/Free for members\, RSVP required.

SUMMARY:Mount Auburn and Green-Wood Cemeteries: Their Historians in Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Opening its gates in Cambridge\, Massachusetts in 1831\, Mount Auburn was America’s first rural cemetery\, providing the model for cemeteries across the country—including Green-Wood! The list of luminaries buried within it is endless\, including painter Winslow Homer\, reformer Dorthea Dix\, poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow\, and collector extraordinaire Isabella Stewart Gardner. Set among its 175 acres of rolling hills are breathtaking monuments and mausoleums designed by the leading designers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and a diverse collection of flora. Join Meg L. Winslow\, Mount Auburn’s curator of historical collections and archives\, and Jeff Richman\, Green-Wood’s historian\, as they discuss the historical significance of these two great rural cemeteries and how they are being preserved for centuries to come! \n\n\n\nThis conversation is part of our series of virtual programs about the history of Green-Wood and its permanent residents\, Zooming in on History. \n\n\n\n\n\n$9 / $4 for members.
