DESCRIPTION:This event is sold out. You can check our full calendar for more events. Make sure you never miss out on tickets again! Green-Wood members get access to tickets weeks before the general public. Join today. \n\n\n\nWhile the colorful trees and migrating birds of Green-Wood get lots of buzz\, visitors might not know about the bounty of mushrooms sprouting throughout the Cemetery’s 478 verdant acres. SUMMARY:A Day in the Life of a Death Doula
DESCRIPTION:You’ve heard of a birth doula\, but what about a death doula? It’s a profession that has only recently begun making its way to the mainstream\, but one that is highly poignant. Death doulas serve an important role in end-of-life care\, helping individuals and families to navigate the uncharted territory of the dying process. But what exactly does a death doula do?  \n\n\n\nJoin us for a panel discussion that sets out to answer this question\, and provide first-hand insight into the role of the death doula. Panelists and deathcare professionals  Dina Stander\, Lashanna Williams\, Ori Aguila\, and Maria Salas—will take us through their experiences advocating for compassion and community within the death and dying process. \n\n\n\n\n\nFree. A Zoom link will be in your confirmation email upon registration. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\nGet Tickets on Eventbrite\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis program is presented as part of a new Death Education series at Green-Wood\, Death & Us. Death is the great universal\, but the ways in which the dead are grieved and memorialized vary across racial\, cultural\, and economic divides in the United States. This series brings together a myriad of voices—from historians and preservationists to activists and funeral practitioners—to explore how diverse communities mourn and commemorate the departed from our nation’s founding to today.

SUMMARY:History Revisited: Celebrating Green-Wood’s Black Residents
DESCRIPTION:In honor of Black History Month\, Green-Wood presents this virtual celebration and recognition of the unique stories of Black lives memorialized at the Cemetery. Although Brooklyn and New York City have long struggled with segregation and racism\, they also have a history of diversity\, progress\, and activism. This conversation\, between City Councilman Robert E. Cornegy\, Jr.\, and Green-Wood Historian Jeff Richman\, will examine the life and accomplishments of many prominent Black New Yorkers. Featured will be Jean-Michel Basquiat\, innovative artist of the 1970s and ’80s; Susan Smith McKinney Steward\, the first Black female doctor in the New York State; Jeremiah Hamilton\, New York’s first Black millionaire; and jazz great Cedar Walton. We’ll also discuss freed enslaved people who worked as abolitionists and those buried in Green-Wood’s Freedom Lots\, where more than one thousand people of color are interred. These stories illustrate the long struggle towards equality that remains ongoing today. \n\n\n\nThis conversation is part of our series of virtual programs about the history of Green-Wood and its permanent residents\, Zooming in on History. \n\n\n\n\n\nReservations to this virtual program are free. Please consider a donation so that Green-Wood can continue to provide free and low-cost programs throughout the year. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\nGet Tickets on Eventbrite\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA Zoom link will be in your confirmation email upon registration.

SUMMARY:Why BIPOC Horticulture Knowledge Matters
DESCRIPTION:BIPOC (Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color) horticulturists’ understanding of plants and nature is often grounded in different perspectives than the institutions in which they work here in the United States. Intentionally or unintentionally\, both public and private gardens currently fail to integrate BIPOC expertise and knowledge in their garden operations. How can institutions integrate this knowledge and create healthier work environments? \n\n\n\nThis program will be led by Wambui Ippolito\, a landscape designer\, horticulturist\, and graduate of the New York Botanical Garden’s School of Professional Horticulture. She develops programming for museums\, public gardens\, and parks exploring the broader context of horticulture\, focusing on the intersections between migration\, design\, history\, culture and science. She lectures both in the US and internationally. In her former career\, Wambui worked as a Development & Democracy Consultant at international organizations both in the US and around the world. She is multilingual\, fluent in five languages. Wambui is also the founder of the BIPOC Hort Group (@bipochort on instagram)\, a multicultural professional organization with membership from the US\, Asia\, Africa\, Latin America\, and the Caribbean. \n\n\n\nThis conversation is part of our new series of virtual programs about the horticulture and wildlife of Green-Wood\, Zooming in on Nature.  \n\n\n\n\n\n$5/Free for members\, RSVP required. SUMMARY:Death Café
DESCRIPTION:The Death Café is inspired by the centuries-old European salon (or café)\, an informal gathering to discuss philosophical\, political or scientific ideas. In 2011\, British entrepreneur Jon Underwood brought this concept to discussions of the most universal topic of all: death. Underwood’s intention was to provide an opportunity to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” Today\, there are over 4\,400 Death Cafes in 26 countries around the world. \nGreen-Wood is proud to host monthly gatherings of the Death Café here in our beautiful\, modern chapel. Amy Cunningham\, death educator and creator of the Brooklyn-based blog TheInspiredFuneral.com\, invites participants to share their thoughts and feelings on death. It’s an opportunity for safe and open exchanges\, without an agenda. Tea and light snacks are provided. \n“A place for people to discuss our inevitable fate.” – Gothamist \n“It’s a reversal for American culture\, which for a long time has shied away from these conversations.” – Village Voice \n“[E]ncouraging people to talk about death more freely and naturally.” – Haaretz \nFree to attend\, RSVP recommended. Please register using the Eventbrite box below. \nThis program takes place in our Modern Chapel just to the right after passing through the Gothic Arches at the main entrance. All events will take place rain or shine. Click here for our inclement weather policy. \n \nMobile users: Please tap here for free registration.\n

SUMMARY:Urban Oases: Green-Wood and Central Park
DESCRIPTION:New Yorkers have long desired to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. Their first chance came in 1838 when Green-Wood opened far off in the city of Brooklyn\, and quickly became a major tourist destination. Twenty years later came Central Park\, designed by masterminds Olmsted and Vaux\, which offered its own unique landscape and recreational experiences.  \n\n\n\nBut what is the relationship between Green-Wood and Central Park? The Cemetery was\, in many ways\, the inspiration and model for the park. Central Park Conservancy Historian Marie Warsh joins Green-Wood Historian Jeff Richman to talk about these two iconic New York landmarks\, which share design elements\, common artisans\, and more. \n\n\n\nThis conversation is part of our series of virtual programs about the history of Green-Wood and its permanent residents\, Zooming in on History. \n\n\n\n\n\n$9 / $4 for members. SUMMARY:Birding in Peace
DESCRIPTION:Before our gates open to the general public\, birding expert Rob Jett leads these peaceful Sunday morning walking tours to discover the many birds that call Green-Wood home. \n\n\n\nJust because it’s winter\, doesn’t mean that there aren’t interesting birds to discover in Green-Wood. For some bird species that migrate south after the breeding season\, Brooklyn is their Miami during the cold months. Spend the early morning exploring the cemetery\, looking for overwintering waterfowl\, nuthatches\, woodpeckers\, sparrows\, finches and any half-hardy birds that decided to stick around. By February we’ll see some of the early north-bound birds beginning to trickle back into the area. \n\n\n\nAll walks are at a slow pace on easy to moderate terrain\, but proper\, close toed footwear is suggested. Green-Wood’s official birding checklist is available to pick up from the security guard at the Main Entrance on 25th Street or as a printable PDF here. \n\n\n\n\n\nTickets are $20/$15 for members. SUMMARY:Future of the Funeral: Memorializing Loved Ones during COVID-19
DESCRIPTION:What can we glean from the grief of the great American military battles\, the AIDS Epidemic\, 9-11\, and Sandy Hook that is applicable to these uncertain days of the novel coronavirus? A great deal\, as it happens. While commemorative flags\, quilts\, wreaths\, home altars\, obituaries\, grave markers\, scrap books\, and stories are as relevant as ever\, technology has a greater role in loving remembrance and life story preservation. Also\, even in winter\, we are safely holding more funerals in the great outdoors. Join death educator and funeral director Amy Cunningham for a conversation on how to preserve the legacy of a loved one who has died during the COVID-19 period. From Zoom memorials to remembrances in public spaces\, earth altars and more\, we’ll explore how older customs merge with new possibilities. \n\n\n\n\n\nFree. SUMMARY:What Happens When No One Can Pay for the Funeral?
DESCRIPTION:Death is universal\, but its aftermath can be difficult—particularly when no one has money for a funeral. What happens to those who die with no family and no money? Social anthropologist Sally Raudon has traveled the world\, exploring that issue across many cultures. Join Raudon and Green-Wood Historian Jeff Richman for a discussion about how the bodies of the indigent are interred throughout the world\, comparing such New York City burials to those in the United Kingdom\, New Zealand\, Ghana\, Bali\, etc. She will also touch on excess mortality and how that is being handled around the world. \n\n\n\nSally Raudon is a PhD Candidate in the Department of Social Anthropology at St. John’s College of the University of Cambridge in England; her doctoral work focuses on what happens to New Yorkers who can’t afford a funeral. She has visited many diverse cultures\, exploring how the bodies of the indigent are interred. \n\n\n\n\n\n$9 / $4 for members. SUMMARY:History Happy Hour: Forever Young—The Canda Monument
DESCRIPTION:Life after death takes on a new meaning when discussing the Charlotte Canda monument and the cult fascination that has gripped Green-Wood’s visitors since it was erected. Often the poster child for Green-Wood in early guidebooks from the mid-1800s\, the Canda gravesite is exemplary not only for its ornate decoration\, but also for the tragic story it tells. Join us for this special History Happy Hour as we explore the monument’s beautiful design as well as investigate the story behind Green-Wood’s “It Girl.” \n\n\n\nWhile we can’t actually bring the bar or the drinks to you\, we can offer some history on tap!
Historian Drew Gilpin Faust weaves together a complex narrative of national grief\, shared by both northerners and southerners\, in her extraordinary and landmark book\, This Republic of Suffering: Death and the Civil War. Join Dr. Faust and Green-Wood’s historian Jeff Richman for a conversation about death\, mourning\, and memorialization in the wake of the Civil War. \n\n\n\nDr. Faust is one of the leading historians of the Civil War and the American South and served as the president of Harvard University\, the first woman to hold that position.
There are no paper or e-tickets. Attendees will be checked in by name. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\nGet Tickets on Eventbrite\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nCourtesy of Jennifer Kepler.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNot a Member?\n\n\n\nClick here for all of our membership levels and information. \n\n\n\nAlready a Member?\n\n\n\nClick the gray tickets button to activate the Eventbrite pop-up\, then click Enter promo code.
