SUMMARY:Arbor Day Street Tree Care
DESCRIPTION:Street trees do some heavy lifting in our city: they intercept and absorb storm water runoff\, filter the air\, mitigate the effects of climate change\,  help cool our neighborhoods\, and are habitat to many wildlife that fill our streets with song and awe. However\, growing on the streets of the city can be rough! Their soils can be compacted easily\, which can stunt root growth and inhibit water absorption. Join the Green-Wood horticulture team to care for our neighborhood street trees!  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: Free. Registration recommended. \n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn-Person Event(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\nVolunteer stewardship activities include: \n\n\n\nTree bed clean up and soil cultivation – In addition to being unsightly\, compacted soil and litter block the movement of oxygen\, water and nutrients to tree roots. Volunteers remove litter and weeds from tree beds and loosen up the surface soil with hand cultivators \n\n\n\nWatering Trees – New York City street trees live in permanent drought conditions. All trees\, especially newly planted trees\, need thorough and deep watering during the spring and summer. Volunteers water trees using buckets and hoses. \n\n\n\nMulching – Mulch conserves water\, moderates soil temperatures\, improves soil structure and mitigates damage from dogs\, people\, de-icing salts and cleaning agents. Volunteers mulch trees with mulch or woodchips. \n\n\n\nLocation: Check-in takes place outside the 9th Avenue D subway entrance. \n\n\n\nBefore Registering\, Please Note:\n\n\n\n\nTickets: There is no need to print tickets! Attendees will be checked in by name.\n\n\n\nWhere To Go: Check-in takes place at the 9th Avenue D subway entrance.\n\n\n\nFor Your Safety: We strongly encourage attendees to wear suitable footwear. \n\n\n\nInclement Weather Policy: We monitor the weather throughout the day for the best chance of proceeding with the program\, and will not make a final decision until at least 3 hours before the start of the program. SUMMARY:Mother
DESCRIPTION:AN Installation by Eiko Otake\n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto Credit: Maria Baranova\n\n\n\nFebruary 25th–May 7thFree and Open to the Public Daily 10am–5pmHistoric Chapel \n\n\n\nIn her fifty-year career\, Eiko Otake has explored themes of loss\, which has included practicing her own death\, conversing with the dead\, and moving among the abandoned remains of irradiated Fukushima. Otake is interested in communing with and surveying the physical and emotional traces of the deceased. \n\n\n\nIn Mother\, through videos and sculpture\, Otake talks to and dances with her mother\, who died in 2019. It is one daughter and her mother’s personal story. The artist\, however\, hopes viewers have an opportunity to contemplate their own maternal bonds\, as well as the diverse yet common connection to a mother that “links us all to the distant past.” Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel is a poignant setting for Mother\, as for over a century it has provided many with a place for such reflection.  \n\n\n\nMother is curated by Harry Weil\, Green-Wood’s Vice President of Education and Public Programs. Iris McCloughan aided in the installation’s creation as a dramaturg. Mother includes two videos created in 2019 soon after Otake’s mother passed away\, as well as photo prints and objects. The video of the artist speaking is excerpted from “Elegies\,” made in collaboration with John Killacky and Brian Stevenson. The other\, “With Mother in Twilight\,” was filmed by Rebekkah Palov.   \n\n\n\nMade possible in part by the New York State Council on the Arts and National Endowment for the Arts. \n\n\n\nClick here for more information about the artist and installation. \n\n\n\nFree and open to the public\, no reservations are necessary. Please consider a donation to The Green-Wood Historic Fund so that we can continue to offer free and low-cost programs throughout the year.

Attended by me\, her death was unhurried\, and convincingly due.” — Eiko Otake \n\n\n\nJoin us for a special evening with acclaimed movement-based\, interdisciplinary artist Eiko Otake\, whose latest Installation\, Mother\, is currently on view in the Historic Chapel. Having often explored themes of loss\, Otake performed Two Grave Markers at Green-Wood in 2020\, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Registration required. \n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn-Person Event(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\nOtake will be joined in conversation with Gabrielle Gatto\, Green-Wood’s coordinator of public programs and a certified death doula\, for a discussion about dying\, death\, loss\, and grief. In particular\, they will focus on the experience of witnessing the death of a loved one: the impact it has on our own lives and\, in contrast\, how violence deprives people not only of life but also of an unhurried death.  \n\n\n\nThis talk takes place in the Modern Chapel\, and there will be an opportunity to view the installation in the Historic Chapel before and after. A reception will follow. \n\n\n\nFree. Registration required. Please consider a donation to the Green-Wood Historic Fund so that we can continue to offer free and low-cost programs throughout the year. \n\n\n\nBefore Reserving Your SPot\, Please Note:\n\n\n\n\nCOVID-19 Policy: In accordance with New York State and CDC guidance\, masks are optional. Green-Wood’s official birding checklist will be made available to all attendees\, or you can print it in advance here. \n\n\n\nAnd depending when you stop by\, you may see a variety of different species passing through: \n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: $20\, and $15 for members \n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWalking Tour(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\nEarly Spring Migration (April) \n\n\n\nOur April tours will be a feast for the ears and eyes with the trilling song of pine warblers and drumming pronouncements of woodpeckers on newly blossoming trees (including magnolias\, maples\, quinces\, and dogwoods). We’ll discover thousands of songbirds resting before their trip farther north as well as arriving herons and egrets at Green-Wood’s glacial ponds. \n\n\n\nPeak Spring Migration (May to mid-June) \n\n\n\nFrom ruby-throated hummingbirds to over twenty species of colorful wood warblers\, our peak migration tours will feature many of the 163 bird species that have been recorded at Green-Wood during the month of May. Beginning just after sunrise\, we will experience spring’s dawn chorus at the most active time of day for birds. \n\n\n\nSummer Birding (Late June to August) \n\n\n\nIn July we should see the offspring of our resident red-tailed hawk bravely preparing to leave the nest. Warbler songs will be replaced by chirring cicadas and the tweets of fledgling birds. Butterflies and dragonflies are abundant. By late-July\, expect the arrival of the first southbound migrants. \n\n\n\nBefore Purchasing A Ticket\, Please Note:\n\n\n\n\nCOVID-19 Policy: In accordance with New York State and CDC guidance\, masks are optional.

SUMMARY:Birding in Peace
DESCRIPTION:Credit: Evan Rabeck\n\n\n\n\n\nBefore our gates open to the general public\, birding expert Rob Jett leads these peaceful early morning walking tours to discover the many birds that make Green-Wood their home—at least temporarily.
