The concert features the ISO Symphonic Band\, founded in 1995 to sponsor talented students throughout New York City and led by ISO’s inimitable founder and conductor Brian P. Worsdale. Each year we feature the works of Green-Wood’s permanent residents Fred Ebb\, Louis Moreau Gottschalk\, Leonard Bernstein\, and many others.  \nThe concert is a free event\, but please click here to register your group online so that we can gauge response. \nA trolley “mini-tour” begins right after the concert\, featuring highlights of Green-Wood. SUMMARY:1 p.m. Life and Death Along Sportsmen’s Row: Brooklyn’s Eighth Avenue and Green-Wood
DESCRIPTION: \n \nIn the 1890s\, a swath of Eighth Avenue was grandly deemed Sportsmen’s Row for the many residents in horseracing as owners\, trainers\, and jockeys. Meanwhile\, they lived among men of prominence and success in politics\, business\, law\, and the arts. Lucas Rubin has explored their intertwined lives in his 2012 book\, Brooklyn’s Sportsmen’s Row: Politics\, Society\, and the Sporting Life on Northern Eighth Avenue. And in fact\, much of Rubin’s research was done in Green-Wood’s fruitful archives.  \nNow\, Rubin offers something of a final chapter\, a “where are they now?” of these early Brooklyn residents. Just as their lives came together in fascinating ways\, death brought many together again – right here in Green-Wood.  \nThis talk will take a closer look at some of the book’s more peripheral characters – and some of Eighth Avenue’s most renowned denizens. After the talk\, hop on the trolley for a tour of related Green-Wood sites.  \nThis event has two parts\, with separate tickets for each part: \n\nThe free book talk/presentation in the historic Green-Wood chapel\, ending with a book signing.\nA guided trolley tour immediately following the talk. She has been known to break into an occasional song during her tours. \nA Brooklyn native\, Ruth Edebohls is a licensed New York City tour guide and urban historian with a special enthusiasm for Green-Wood Cemetery. After working for the Brooklyn Center for the Urban Environment as its Coordinator of Urban Tours and as a tour guide for 15 years\, Ruth became a tour guide for the Green-Wood Historic Fund several years ago. She has created and led a host of fascinating tours of Green-Wood. \nAfter retiring from many years of teaching\, Tom Russell became a volunteer at Green-Wood in 2003\, greeting visitors and answering their questions. Tom long has been fascinated with the cemetery’s history\, architecture\, topography\, natural beauty\, and the stories of its permanent residents. DESCRIPTION: \nCivil War Ships\, a Coney Island pier\, vanished Lower East Side streets and Green-Wood – they all converge in this talk by architect David Grider. David’s unflagging curiosity led him on a long research journey through the brass foundry of James Gregory’s surprising eminence in New York history. \nThe rapid-prototyping neighborhoods of foundries & ship yards may have vanished long ago\, but their artful pieces still pop up in SoHo facades\, Virginian steeples and\, surprisingly\, the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. He’ll detail his findings and the hidden threads one uncovers in research. It’s perfect for urban history enthusiasts or anyone who’s ever dove head first into the research rabbit hole. \nAfter the talk\, hop on our trolley for a tour of related Green-Wood sites\, like James Gregory himself\, Brooklyn Bridge caisson maker Eckford Webb\, and cast iron great James Bogardus. \nThis event has two parts\, with separate tickets for each part: \n\nThe free talk in the historic Green-Wood chapel.\nA guided trolley tour immediately following the talk.
