Join Wes and Barbara Gottlock\, authors of a book on the subject and tour guides of the island\, as they detail the history of this remarkable site\, dating back to 1900 when the land was purchased by Brooklyn resident Francis Bannerman (now buried at Green-Wood) for the storage of military goods which he sold through a world famous Civil War-era catalog. With extensive research and stunning photographs\, the Gottlocks will cover the island’s rise as a glorious landmark and its eventual decline – plus the recent calls for preservation and restoration. Buy a book and have it signed\, then board the trolley for a short Green-Wood tour\, including a stop at the Bannerman family plot. \nThis event has two parts\, with separate tickets for each part: \n1. The free talk in the historic Green-Wood chapel.\n2. A guided trolley tour immediately following the talk. Tickets are $15 for members of the Green-Wood Historic Fund and $20 for nonmembers. \nPlease include both free talk tickets and trolley tour tickets in your order if you would like to attend both parts of the event. Though segregation has certainly been an issue in the city\, Brooklyn and New York City also have long histories of diversity and civil rights activism. This trolley tour will examine the life and accomplishments of many prominent black New Yorkers\, as well as several abolitionists also working for freedom in America.  \nStops will include Susan Smith McKinney Stewart\, the first black female doctor in the state; Jean-Michel Basquiat\, innovative artist of the 1970s and ’80s; Jeremiah Hamilton\, New York’s first black millionaire; civil war heroes and survivors; and more. At the stunning Pierrepont memorial\, you’ll learn about Hezekiah Beers Pierrepont and his early-19th century downtown Brooklyn distillery\, plus other permanent residents with whiskey connections\, including the only casualty in the contentious Whiskey Wars of the mid-1800s.  \nAfter the tour\, climb aboard Green-Wood’s trolley and head to Kings County Distillery in the Brooklyn Navy Yard! They’ve been making gin and whiskey in their historic building since 2010. You’ll see how they create their modern whiskey before tasting some of the delectable product. \n$30 for members of the Historic Fund/$35 for nonmembers. DESCRIPTION: \n \n \n \n \nIn the pursuit of the perfect shot\, photographer Colin Winterbottom has climbed to the top of national landmarks\, crawled into dark and dusty spaces\, and sought out the most dramatic urban landscapes he could find.  \nThis year Winterbottom found a worthy subject in Green-Wood when he was commissioned to bring his award-winning eye to Green-Wood’s forthcoming book Green-Wood at 175: Looking Back/Looking Forward. Currently\, many of his photos of monuments and mausoleums grace the walls in the Museum of the City of New York’s current exhibition on Green-Wood’s 175th anniversary.  \nOn this trolley tour with Winterbottom and Green-Wood Historian Jeff Richman\, you’ll return to the scene of the photographer’s Green-Wood shots (including several mausoleum interiors) as he talks inspiration and technique.
