Join today. \nJoin Nancy Rosin\, President of the National Valentine Collectors Association\, for this time-traveling presentation on valentines and other items that serve as expressions of love. In today’s world\, valentines are generally relegated to children’s classrooms\, but in the Victorian era (and before) there was a real need to give and receive tokens of love. Life was often shorter\, distances longer\, and sometimes friends\, family\, and lovers said goodbye without knowing if they’d ever communicate again. Objects of affection – be they romantic cards\, hand-carved coins\, locks of hair\, or more – were touchstones for those left behind. Those traditions continued in death and mourning\, and in many ways influenced the way we celebrate our modern Valentine’s Day.  \nIn Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel\, Rosin will discuss the history of this time-honored tradition\, and display many pieces from her impressive collection of historic items. After the talk\, a trolley tour through Green-Wood (including toasty beverages!) will feature expressions of love rendered in stone\, on the monuments and memorials of many permanent residents. \n$20 for members of Green-Wood and BHS / $25 for non-members. Though segregation has certainly been an issue in the city\, Brooklyn and New York also have long histories of diversity\, progress\, and activism. This trolley tour\, led by Green-Wood Historian Jeff Richman\, will examine the life and accomplishments of many prominent black New Yorkers\, as well as several abolitionists working for freedom in America.  \nYou’ll visit the monuments of Susan Smith McKinney Steward\, the first black female doctor in the state; Jean-Michel Basquiat\, innovative artist of the 1970s and ’80s; Jeremiah Hamilton\, New York’s first black millionaire; civil war heroes and survivors; freed slaves working as abolitionists\, and more. Join today. \n \nThere are over 700 mausoleums dotting the Green-Wood landscape\, and although they are much smaller in scale than the great buildings of New York\, they are not lacking for architectural significance and merit. Scores of prominent New Yorkers are buried in Green-Wood and oftentimes\, the same architects who were designing impressive homes in the city were also tapped to build within Green-Wood’s 478 acres.  \n \nJoin expert tour guide Ruth Edebohls for a look at the fabulous architectural designs hidden within Green-Wood’s rolling hills. You’ll visit structures designed by renowned architects including Ernest Flagg\, Richard Upjohn and Son\, Stanford White and more. \n \n$15 for members of Green-Wood and BHS/$20 for nonmembers. \n \nThis program is sponsored in part by New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M.
