Stroll Green-Wood’s dusk-lit landscape as Revolutionary War reenactors illuminate life at the time of our country’s battle for survival: setting up camp\, cooking\, socializing\, and steeling themselves for the next day’s battle. There will be dance demonstrations\, festive music\, 18th-century food to sample\, and storytelling about battles won and lost amidst the glow of a campfire. SUMMARY:Battle of Brooklyn: Commemoration
DESCRIPTION:The Battle of Brooklyn\, fought in 1776 on land that is now a part of Green-Wood\, was the first battle of the American Revolution to be waged after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Green-Wood hosts a morning of commemoration to honor all those who served to defend the young Republic. See parades\, cannon fire\, horses\, and re-enactments. This is a great event for kids and families! \n10:00 AM – TROLLEY TOUR (Sold Out): This is a separate\, ticketed tour\, not included in general registration for the Commemoration events. \n11:00 AM – LIFE ON THE BATTLEFIELD: Meet soldiers\, their horses\, and famous colonial Americans. Historic re-enactors will demonstrate revolutionary weapons and tactics.  \n12:30 PM – BATTLE OF BROOKLYN PARADE: Grab a Revolutionary regiment flag\, wave it high\, and march to Battle Hill with The Regimental Band of the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Begins at the main gate. Free. \n1:15 PM – COMMEMORATIVE CEREMONY: Honor the spirit and heroes of the Battle of Brooklyn at this commemoration on Battle Hill\, overlooking New York Harbor.  \nThese events are free\, excluding the trolley tour\, but please register online so that we can gauge response. We encourage you to consider making an optional donation with your reservation to ensure our ability to continue to offer these events free of charge. \nPlease note that the loud noises of the cannons can cause permanent damage to the ears or even hearing loss. Join today. \n \nNew York Times bestselling author Malachy McCourt joins us for a very special literary evening to discuss his new work Death Need Not be Fatal\, a personal memoir that shows readers how to live life to its fullest\, how to grow old without acting old\, and how to die without regret. McCourt recounts the tragedies that have shaped his life: the deaths of his sister and twin brothers; the real story behind Angela’s famous ashes; and a poignant account of the death of the man who left his mother\, brothers\, and him to nearly die in squalor. Yet\, he finds humor in all that life has thrown him so as to look at the prospect of his own demise with emotional clarity and insight. McCourt will be introduced by the book’s co-author Brian McDonald. \n \nMcCourt was born in Brooklyn\, New York in 1931\, but grew up in Limerick\, Ireland. He returned to the United States at the age of 20 where he says he “did a bit of dishwashing\, long-shoring\, military service\, bartending\, stage acting\, and saloon owning.” His illustrative career also included stints as a political activist and a 2006 candidate for governor of the state of New York. DESCRIPTION:What does it sound like when a chorus of female voices sing softly at the bedside of someone who is ill or dying? It sounds like an ancient art\, which is exactly what it is. Bedside singing choirs now exist throughout the United States\, offering solace to those who are on the threshold of life. Artist Leigh Davis has created a new site specific sound installation for Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel that brings this beautiful music into its sacred space. Visitors are encouraged to sit or move through the chapel at their own leisure. The work offers a way to explore the power of loss and memory through song\, emphasizing the beauty and peace one might find in the universal experience of death.  Vigil is presented as part of Reimagining Tradition\, an exhibition developed by Open Source Gallery. \n\nFree\, no reservations required.\n\nClick here for our inclement weather policy.

DESCRIPTION: \n \n \nThere is no better way to enjoy the impressive array of fall foliage than by exploring New York City’s best kept greenspace.  \n \nBeginning at the Fort Hamilton Gate House\, artist Matthew Jensen will guide visitors on three-hour walks to discover Green-Wood’s rich collection of majestic trees and historic monuments. Jensen will be accompanied on each walk by a member of Green-Wood’s staff who will share their own behind-the-scenes experience and knowledge of the cemetery. Through carefully selected poetry and music\, we will share a beautiful series of rituals designed to heal and restore. \n \nThe evening will conclude with the lighting of memorial lanterns at sunset and launching them onto a tranquil pond. \n \nRemembrance is a unifying force when separation is validated and shared. Family members can attend this event together\, but anyone will find companionship with others in attendance. \n \nAll are welcome\, regardless of where loved ones are interred or memorialized.
