DESCRIPTION: \nBefore our gates open to the general public\, birding expert Rob Jett leads these peaceful Sunday morning walking tours to discover the many birds that call Green-Wood home. Green-Wood’s official birding checklist is available to pick up from the security guard at the main entrance on 25th Street or to print here. Comfortable footwear is recommended. \n \nEarly-Spring Migration\nOur April tours will be a feast for the ears and eyes with the trilling song of Pine Warblers and drumming pronouncements of Woodpeckers on newly blossoming trees (including magnolias\, maples\, quinces\, and dogwoods). We’ll discover thousands of songbirds resting before their trip north as well as arriving herons & egrets at Green-Wood’s glacial ponds. \n \nPeak Spring Migration\nFrom Ruby-throated Hummingbirds to over 20 species of colorful wood-warblers\, our peak migration tours will feature many of the 163 bird species that have been recorded at Green-Wood during the month of May. Beginning just after sunrise\, we will experience spring’s dawn chorus at the active time of day for birds. \n \nSummer Birding\nIn July we should see the offspring of our resident red-tailed hawk bravely preparing to leave the nest. Warbler songs will be replaced by chirring Cicadas and the tweets of fledgling birds. Butterflies and dragonflies are abundant. DESCRIPTION: \nBefore our gates open to the general public\, birding expert Rob Jett leads these peaceful Sunday morning walking tours to discover the many birds that call Green-Wood home. Green-Wood’s official birding checklist is available to pick up from the security guard at the main entrance on 25th Street or to print here. Comfortable footwear is recommended. \n \nEarly-Spring Migration\nOur April tours will be a feast for the ears and eyes with the trilling song of Pine Warblers and drumming pronouncements of Woodpeckers on newly blossoming trees (including magnolias\, maples\, quinces\, and dogwoods). We’ll discover thousands of songbirds resting before their trip north as well as arriving herons & egrets at Green-Wood’s glacial ponds. \n \nPeak Spring Migration\nFrom Ruby-throated Hummingbirds to over 20 species of colorful wood-warblers\, our peak migration tours will feature many of the 163 bird species that have been recorded at Green-Wood during the month of May. Beginning just after sunrise\, we will experience spring’s dawn chorus at the active time of day for birds. \n \nSummer Birding\nIn July we should see the offspring of our resident red-tailed hawk bravely preparing to leave the nest. Warbler songs will be replaced by chirring Cicadas and the tweets of fledgling birds. Butterflies and dragonflies are abundant. DESCRIPTION:Credit: Robert Denbo\nThe Battle of Brooklyn\, fought in 1776 on land that is now a part of Green-Wood\, was the first battle of the American Revolution to occur after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Green-Wood hosts a day of commemoration to honor all those who served to defend the young republic. See parades\, cannon fire\, horses\, and re-enactments. This is a great event for kids and families. \n10 – 11 AM – TROLLEY TOUR: Join author and historian Barnet Schecter and Green-Wood historian Jeff Richman for a tour of Green-Wood’s Revolutionary War-related sites. This is a separate\, ticketed tour\, not included in general registration for the commemoration events. Please click here for tickets. \n11 AM – LIFE ON THE BATTLEFIELD: Meet soldiers\, their horses\, and famous colonial Americans. Historic re-enactors will demonstrate revolutionary weapons and tactics. \n12:30 PM – BATTLE OF BROOKLYN PARADE: Grab a Revolutionary regiment flag\, wave it high\, and march to Battle Hill with The Regimental Band of the United States Merchant Marine Academy. \n1:15 PM – COMMEMORATION CEREMONY: Honor the spirit and heroes of the Battle of Brooklyn at this commemoration on Battle Hill\, overlooking New York Harbor. \nThese events are free\, excluding the trolley tour\, but please register online so that we can gauge response. We encourage you to consider making an optional donation with your reservation to ensure our ability to continue to offer these events free of charge. \nPlease note: Attendees must stand within the designated viewing areas when the cannons are being fired.
