SUMMARY:Angel’s Share: mɔɹnɪŋ [morning//mourning]
DESCRIPTION:The Long Story\n\n\n\n“Sly and sweet\, wistful and winsome and altogether lovable… Gelsey Bell’s wonderful\, uncategorizable guide to what might unfold on Earth in the millions and billions of years after human history” \n\n\n\n– The New York Times \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: $65 \n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn-Person Event(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\nmɔɹnɪŋ (the phonetic spelling for the word “morning” as well as the word “mourning”) is an operatic masterpiece by singer and composer Gelsey Bell\, which begins just after humanity has disappeared entirely from the Earth\, and traces the weeks\, months\, years\, and millennia that follow. What emerges is a journey through time that is simultaneously whimsical\, fantastical\, playful and profound\, offering a poignant reminder of what it means to be human – despite taking place entirely after our species has vanished from the planet. This specially-adapted production of this critically-acclaimed opera was created just for the Catacombs.  \n\n\n\nThe Short Story\n\n\n\nNothing lasts forever\, but let the magnificent Gelsey Bell welcome you to the Catacombs with her merry band of virtuoso music-makers\, as they spin us a tale that takes us to the heart of what truly matters in this life. \n\n\n\nThe Angel’s Share\n\n\n\nNow in its sixth season\, the Angel’s Share presents intimate classical classical music concerts\, with repertoire ranging from medieval through to contemporary works\, specifically chosen to highlight the unique presence and acoustic power of Green-Wood’s Catacombs\, and the singular character of the Cemetery grounds. The series is curated and directed by Death of Classical Founder Andrew Ousley\, in partnership with the Cemetery. Each Angel’s Share concert features a pre-show spirits tasting\, included in the ticket price\, and the series takes its name from the distiller’s term for whiskey that evaporates while maturing in the barrel\, thus going to the angels. Concerts have been praised in major cultural press throughout the country\, with Vogue Magazine describing it as “one of the most riveting and unusual chamber music performances of my lifetime\,” and The New York Times saying “In a Cemetery\, music lives.” \n\n\n\nGelsey Bell\n\n\n\nGelsey Bell is a Brooklyn-based songwriter\, vocalist\, multi-instrumentalist\, and scholar. She has been described by The New York Times as “one of New York’s most adventurous musicians” and “a charismatic and fiercely intelligent performer.” She is a core member of thingNY\, Varispeed\, and the Chutneys. She has received awards from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts\, Opera America\, the Japan Foundation\, and others. Recent residencies include HERE Arts Center\, Pioneer Works\, Mount Tremper Arts and the Kinosaki Arts Center in Japan. Her works include Cairns (2020)\, a soundwalk for Green-Wood Cemetery (included on the New York Times Best Theater of 2020 list); shuffleyamamba: Yamamba as a Bear (2021)\, a dance piece created with Yasuko Yokoshi; SubtacTTTTTTTTT (2020)\, an early pandemic online performance created with thingNY; and Skylighght (2019)\, created with saxophonist Erin Rogers. She has released multiple albums\, including Heads Together and This is Not a Land of Kings. Performance highlights also include Dave Malloy’s Natasha\, Pierre\, & the Great Comet of 1812 (Broadway) and Ghost Quartet\, Robert Ashley’s Improvement and Crash\, Kate Soper’s Here Be Sirens\, and other works by John King\, Paul Pinto\, Raven Chacon\, Alaina Ferris\, Brent Michael Davids\, Aaron Siegel\, Tomomi Adachi\, and others. She has a PhD from New York University in Performance Studies\, and is part-time faculty at the New School. \n\n\n\nBEFORE PURCHASING YOUR TICKETS\, PLEASE NOTE:\n\n\n\n\nWhere To Go: Check-in begins 15 minutes before your ticketed start time and ONLY takes place at the Gothic Arch near the Main Entrance on Fifth Avenue and 25th Street (500 25th Street). Tasting is for those 21 years of age or older with proof of ID.\n\n\n\nEarly Evening Performance (6pm): Arrive for check-in at the Gothic Arch no later than 6:45pm.\n\n\n\nTwilight Performance (7:30pm): Arrive for check-in at the Gothic Arch no later than 8:15pm.\n\n\n\nFor Your Comfort and Safety: We strongly encourage attendees to wear suitable footwear and dress appropriately for the space as it can be chillier inside the Catacombs than outside. And finally\, we’ll close the night with a performance of Callas’s most beloved arias\, sung by artists from The Metropolitan Opera Lindemann Program and Laffont Competition. \n\n\n\nCome join us as we honor one of the greatest artists in Operatic history with a one-of-a-kind\, one-night-only celebration worthy of La Callas herself. \n\n\n\nPlease note that if only 1 ticket shows as available during the purchase process\, that is the last ticket available. \n\n\n\nBefore Purchasing Tickets\, Please Note:\n\n\n\n\nTasting is for attendees 21 years of age or older with proof of ID.\n\n\n\nDrinks and Food: Tasting of cocktails by Via Carota\, water\, and some light snacks are free. SUMMARY:America/Beautiful 250
DESCRIPTION:Min Kwon\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen pianist Min Kwon first conceived America/Beautiful\, the country was in a moment of fracture – pandemic isolation\, racial reckoning\, and political unrest. Looking at her two daughters\, whose birthdays fall on Presidents’ Day and the Fourth of July\, she began asking a simple\, urgent question: What does America mean\, and what kind of nation are we becoming? \n\n\n\nFrom that reflection came an extraordinary undertaking: America/Beautiful. Kwon commissioned more than eighty leading composers across the United States to each write a variation on America the Beautiful\, producing a vast mosaic of voices\, aesthetics\, identities\, and histories. \n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: $90\, $72 for members \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn-Site Event(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\nNo two variations are alike. Some are tender and lyrical\, others bracing and dissonant; some meditate\, others protest. Together they form a living portrait of a country in conversation with itself. Now\, as the nation approaches its 250th anniversary\, Kwon returns to the Catacombs with music from this monumental project – timed to the release of her complete recording of all 76 variations. What began as a question has become a document of its time: a sonic archive of how America’s leading creative voices\, in all their diversity\, heard this moment in history. \n\n\n\nMember Discount: Green-Wood and Death of Classical members receive 20% off the above ticket price. \n\n\n\nBefore Purchasing A Ticket\, Please Note:\n\n\n\n\nAttendees must follow all instructions and guidance from Cemetery staff and ambassadors.\n\n\n\nWhere To Go: Check-in begins 15 minutes before your ticketed start time and ONLY takes place at the Arch near the Main Entrance on Fifth Avenue and 25th Street (500 25th Street). There are no paper or e-tickets! Attendees will be checked in by name.\n\n\n\nFood and Drinks: We will start with a 45-minute reception at the Modern Chapel to enjoy a tasting of cocktails by Via Carota and snacks (all free!)\, and the beauty of the Cemetery\, before the program begins. Tasting is for those 21 years of age or older with proof of ID.\n\n\n\nEarly Evening Performance (6pm): Arrive for check-in at the Gothic Arch no later than 6:45pm.\n\n\n\nTwilight Performance (7:30pm): Arrive for check-in at the Gothic Arch no later than 8:15pm.\n\n\n\nAccessibility & Safety: Please note that the Catacombs are a historic structure and not ADA-compliant. Access requires ascending and descending stairs. We strongly encourage attendees to dress for the conditions of the Catacombs\, which can be cooler than the outdoor temperature.\n\n\n\nA Little More About Accessibility & Safety: Attendees may travel to the Catacombs on foot or by trolley. The walk takes about 20-30 minutes\, and includes hilly and uneven terrain. Proper footwear and flashlights are strongly recommended. The Green-Wood trolley is ADA-compliant\, but the Catacombs are not. If you have any questions or concerns regarding disability-related accommodations for this program\, please call (718) 768-7300 or email events@green-wood.com.\n\n\n\nTicket sales are final. SUMMARY:Beethoven: String Quartet Op. 135 & Jeff Scott World Premiere
DESCRIPTION:Poiesis Quartet\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe return to the vaulted stillness of the Green-Wood Catacombs for the final completed string quartet of Beethoven – the luminous and enigmatic String Quartet in F major\, Op. 135. \n\n\n\nComposed just months before his death\, Op. 135 stands apart from Beethoven’s other late quartets. Where some rage against fate or reach toward the infinite\, this final work feels like a resolute whisper – intimate\, questioning\, and unexpectedly serene. Beethoven inscribed the opening of the final movement with an enigmatic statement: “Must it be? It must be.” In these final pages\, Beethoven doesn’t shout into the abyss; instead\, he embraces and converses with it. \n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: $90\, $72 for members \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn-Site Event(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\nIn a powerful counterpoint\, Beethoven’s Op. 135 is paired with the world premiere of Jeff Scott’s Tapestry of the Beloved Beatified\, a ritual of remembrance honoring the activists Marsha P. Johnson\, Harvey Milk\, Sylvia Rivera\, and Jeanne Manford. Too often marginalized by history\, their lives rise here not as symbols of struggle\, but as radiant\, deeply human presences–defiant\, compassionate\, and enduring. Scott’s score unfolds through shifting textures of chant\, whispered testimony\, and expanding polyphony\, at moments breaking into speech-like utterance\, as if memory itself were finding its voice. \n\n\n\nPerforming this singular program is the Poiesis Quartet\, named one of The New York Times’ Performances of the Year in 2025. Praised for their precision\, warmth\, and fearless programming\, Poiesis has established itself as one of the most compelling young ensembles on today’s stage\, and we’re honored to bring their elemental\, urgent music-making to the intimacy of the catacombs.
