SUMMARY:Beethoven: String Quartet Op. 135 & Jeff Scott World Premiere
DESCRIPTION:Poiesis Quartet\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe return to the vaulted stillness of the Green-Wood Catacombs for the final completed string quartet of Beethoven – the luminous and enigmatic String Quartet in F major\, Op. 135. \n\n\n\nComposed just months before his death\, Op. 135 stands apart from Beethoven’s other late quartets. Where some rage against fate or reach toward the infinite\, this final work feels like a resolute whisper – intimate\, questioning\, and unexpectedly serene. Beethoven inscribed the opening of the final movement with an enigmatic statement: “Must it be? It must be.” In these final pages\, Beethoven doesn’t shout into the abyss; instead\, he embraces and converses with it. \n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: $90\, $72 for members \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn-Site Event(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\nIn a powerful counterpoint\, Beethoven’s Op. 135 is paired with the world premiere of Jeff Scott’s Tapestry of the Beloved Beatified\, a ritual of remembrance honoring the activists Marsha P. Johnson\, Harvey Milk\, Xulhaz Mannan\, and Jeanne Manford. Too often marginalized by history\, their lives rise here not as symbols of struggle\, but as radiant\, deeply human presences–defiant\, compassionate\, and enduring. Scott’s score unfolds through shifting textures of chant\, whispered testimony\, and expanding polyphony\, at moments breaking into speech-like utterance\, as if memory itself were finding its voice. \n\n\n\nPerforming this singular program is the Poiesis Quartet\, named one of The New York Times’ Performances of the Year in 2025. Praised for their precision\, warmth\, and fearless programming\, Poiesis has established itself as one of the most compelling young ensembles on today’s stage\, and we’re honored to bring their elemental\, urgent music-making to the intimacy of the catacombs. \n\n\n\nMember Discount: Green-Wood and Death of Classical members receive 20% off the above ticket price. \n\n\n\nBefore Purchasing A Ticket\, Please Note:\n\n\n\n\nAttendees must follow all instructions and guidance from Cemetery staff and ambassadors.\n\n\n\nWhere To Go: Check-in begins 15 minutes before your ticketed start time and ONLY takes place at the Arch near the Main Entrance on Fifth Avenue and 25th Street (500 25th Street). There are no paper or e-tickets! Attendees will be checked in by name.\n\n\n\nFood and Drinks: We will start with a 45-minute reception at the Modern Chapel to enjoy a tasting of cocktails by Via Carota and snacks (all free!)\, and the beauty of the Cemetery\, before the program begins. Tasting is for those 21 years of age or older with proof of ID.\n\n\n\nEarly Evening Performance (6pm): Arrive for check-in at the Gothic Arch no later than 6:45pm.\n\n\n\nTwilight Performance (7:30pm): Arrive for check-in at the Gothic Arch no later than 8:15pm.\n\n\n\nAccessibility & Safety: Please note that the Catacombs are a historic structure and not ADA-compliant. Access requires ascending and descending stairs. We strongly encourage attendees to dress for the conditions of the Catacombs\, which can be cooler than the outdoor temperature.\n\n\n\nA Little More About Accessibility & Safety: Attendees may travel to the Catacombs on foot or by trolley. The walk takes about 20-30 minutes\, and includes hilly and uneven terrain. Proper footwear and flashlights are strongly recommended. The Green-Wood trolley is ADA-compliant\, but the Catacombs are not. If you have any questions or concerns regarding disability-related accommodations for this program\, please call (718) 768-7300 or email events@green-wood.com.\n\n\n\nTicket sales are final. No exchanges or refunds unless the event is canceled.

SUMMARY:Lincoln in the Bardo Immersive Cemetery Preview
DESCRIPTION:THE LONG STORY\n\n\n\nDeath of Classical and The Green-Wood Cemetery are once again proud to partner with the Metropolitan Opera for an immersive cemetery preview of Lincoln in the Bardo\, the major new opera based on the beloved Booker Prize-winning novel by George Saunders. With music by composer (and certified Death Doula) Missy Mazzoli and libretto by Royce Vavrek\, the work will receive its world premiere at the Met on October 19\, 2026. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn-Person Event(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\nSet over the course of a single night in a Georgetown cemetery during the Civil War\, Lincoln in the Bardo imagines President Abraham Lincoln returning to the grave of his beloved eleven-year-old son\, Willie\, whose death has shattered him. Trapped between this life and the next in a realm called the bardo\, a chorus of restless spirits watches as Lincoln confronts an impossible grief while carrying the weight of a nation at war. Tender\, funny\, heartbreaking\, and ultimately life-affirming\, the story explores what it means to let go\, to love\, and to carry on after unimaginable loss.  \n\n\n\nOn September 25th\, audiences will journey deep into the heart of Green-Wood along a historic path adorned with music\, dance\, spoken word\, and theatrical encounters inspired by the novel’s haunting world of spirits. As night falls\, an intimate performance featuring stars of the Metropolitan Opera production will begin\, followed by a conversation with Mazzoli and Vavrek moderated by music journalist Amanda Petrusich about bringing Saunders’s masterpiece to the operatic stage. \n\n\n\nTicket options include General Admission seating in chairs and on the grass (with tastings of spirits and non-alcoholic offerings\, along with light snacks) and Premium Seating at reserved tables (which also includes a bottle of wine). \n\n\n\nTHE SHORT STORY\n\n\n\nThe world premiere of Lincoln in the Bardo will be the cultural event of the season\, and you can say you heard it first in the Cemetery…a once-in-a-lifetime preview of this profoundly moving tale of a father grieving his son\, and a president grappling with the soul of a nation. \n\n\n\nWHAT YOU CAN EXPECT\n\n\n\nYou’ll enter through Green-Wood’s iconic Gothic Arch at sunset before setting off on a walk through the Cemetery. Before you get to the stage\, enjoy musicians\, dancers\, actors\, and other performers as they transform the landscape into an echo of the novel’s mysterious bardo\, alongside tastings of spirits and non-alcoholic offerings accompanied by light snacks. Then everyone will gather for an intimate performance of excerpts from Lincoln in the Bardo and a conversation with the creative team behind one of the year’s most anticipated new operas. \n\n\n\nEVENT DETAILS\n\n\n\n6:00-7:30 PM – Pre-Show Immersive Experience (staggered entry based on ticket purchase\, see below) \n\n\n\n7:30-8:30 PM – Mainstage Preview of Lincoln in the Bardo \n\n\n\n8:30-9:00 PM – Return to the Gothic Arch \n\n\n\nTicket Tiers: \n\n\n\n$400 – Premium seating for four at a reserved table near the stage (price includes all four seats at the table)\, with complimentary beverages at your table and entry beginning at 6:00 PM \n\n\n\n$65 – General admission seating in chairs and entry beginning at 6:00 PM \n\n\n\n$15 – General admission seating on the grass (small blankets permitted\, no chairs or picnics allowed) and entry beginning at 6:30 PM \n\n\n\nMember Discount:Green-Wood and Death of Classical members receive 20% off the above ticket price for the General admission seating in chairs and on the grass.
