SUMMARY:Purcell: Dido and Aeneas
DESCRIPTION:The Long Story\nHenry Purcell wrote Dido & Aeneas in 1680\, but this tragic meditation on destiny\, love\, and death resonates just as powerfully today. Director Alek Shrader interweaves excerpts from Christopher Marlowe’s play based on the same story\, infusing a sense of agency and dignity back to the character of the wounded queen\, and the terrible decision she faces when abandoned by the love of her life. With superstar Daniela Mack as Dido\, you won’t want to miss her sing the heartrending final aria “When I Am Laid in Earth” (while…in…a…Catacomb!) \n \nThe Short Story\nWhat’s left\, when all hope of love is lost? Come to the operatic event of the summer and find out. \n \n$80 for members of Green-Wood and BHS / $85 for non-members \n \nThe Angel’s Share\, a new series of opera and chamber music concerts\, takes place in Green-Wood’s Catacombs. One of the oldest structures in the 478-acre National Historic Landmark Cemetery\, the Catacombs were built in the 1850s and are normally closed to the public. The series takes its name from the distiller’s term for whiskey that evaporates while maturing in the barrel\, thus going to the angels. \n \nEach performance includes a pre-concert reception at sunset overlooking New York harbor and the Manhattan skyline. \n \nPLEASE NOTE: Ticketholders must be 21 years or older. \n \nClick here for our inclement weather policy. \n \nMobile users: Please tap here to buy tickets.\n \n\nNot a Member?\nClick here for all of our membership levels and information. \nAlready a Member?\nClick the “Enter promotional code here (members\, use your ID#)” link in the bottom right corner of the ticket box and enter your ID number to apply your ticket discount. SUMMARY:Become a Citizen Pruner
DESCRIPTION:Stewardship and pruning hugely reduce a tree’s vulnerability to common urban threats such as pedestrian and vehicular traffic\, drought and storms. In New York City\, where there is limited funding for tree maintenance but significant need\, Citizen Pruners provides a great asset to our urban environment. Join fellow nature lovers and urbanists to become licensed to take care of NYC’s street trees. \nThe 12-hour Citizen Pruner Course consists of 5 sessions – 4 in the classroom and 1 field outing. \nPrice: $100\, or $15 for residents of Sunset Park (zip codes 11232 and 11220) \nVisit the TreesNY website\, www.treesny.org\, for more information and to reserve your space. \nGIVE TREES A CHANCE\nEnvironmental Justice in South Brooklyn \nGreen-Wood’s own neighborhood\, Sunset Park\, is one of the fastest growing and most diverse neighborhoods in all of New York City. Yet\, it also faces serious environmental challenges. Car and truck exhaust from the Gowanus Expressway and industrial emissions from its small manufacturers create higher than average levels of harmful air pollution. Street trees to the rescue! They’re nature’s miracle workers: they intercept and absorb storm water runoff\, provide oxygen\, fight climate change\, and lower air temperatures. \nThe 6\,500 street trees of Sunset Park have a job to do. And they need all the help they can get! Together with TreesNY\, Green-Wood’s horticulture staff is training a team of tree advocates! If you care about the environment\, join us. TreesNY works with both youth and adult volunteers and works throughout the five boroughs of New York City. \nFunding for this project is provided by the NYS Environmental Protection Fund as administered by the Environmental Justice Community Impact Grant Program of the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation.

SUMMARY:Tree Stewardship
DESCRIPTION:Learn how you can play an active role in supporting the health of our urban forest\, including the basics of watering\, tree bed gardening\, and soil cultivation. \nThis program will take place outdoors and meet at 38th Street and 4th Avenue in Brooklyn. \nFree – visit the TreesNY website\, www.treesny.org\, for more information and to reserve your space.

SUMMARY:Death Café
DESCRIPTION:The Death Café is inspired by the centuries-old European salon (or café)\, an informal gathering to discuss philosophical\, political or scientific ideas. In 2011\, British entrepreneur Jon Underwood brought this concept to discussions of the most universal topic of all: death. Underwood’s intention was to provide an opportunity to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” Today\, there are over 4\,400 Death Cafes in 26 countries around the world. \nGreen-Wood is proud to host monthly gatherings of the Death Café here in our beautiful\, modern chapel. Amy Cunningham\, death educator and creator of the Brooklyn-based blog TheInspiredFuneral.com\, invites participants to share their thoughts and feelings on death. It’s an opportunity for safe and open exchanges\, without an agenda. Tea and light snacks are provided. \n“A place for people to discuss our inevitable fate.” – Gothamist \n“It’s a reversal for American culture\, which for a long time has shied away from these conversations.” – Village Voice \n“[E]ncouraging people to talk about death more freely and naturally.” – Haaretz \nFree to attend\, RSVP recommended. SUMMARY:Maria Sabina: Shaman\, Curandera\, and Visionary Poet
DESCRIPTION:In 1957\, Life magazine published a photo essay\, “Seeking the Magic Mushroom\,” featuring Maria Sabina\, a curandera (healer) and shaman living in the Sierra Mazateca in southern Mexico. Sabina was the first to allow foreigners to take part in veladas\, healing vigils when participants eat psilocybin mushrooms. The essay opened Western audiences’ eyes to the use of psychedelics and led\, ultimately\, to the synthesizing of LSD. \nIn this illustrated talk\, poet\, novelist\, and diplomat Homero Aridjis will share his first-hand accounts of meeting Maria Sabina\, whom he sees not only as a cultural icon\, but also as arguably the greatest visionary poet in twentieth-century Latin America. Aridjis’s 2013 novel Carne de Dios\, centers on Sabina’s life in Huautla and her involvement with Westerners who flocked to her home to experience the hallucinogenic effects of the “magic mushrooms”. \nConsidered to be one of Latin America’s greatest living writers\, Aridjis is also widely known for his pioneering work as an environmental activist and his two-term stint as president of PEN International. Aridjis has served as Mexico’s Ambassador to Switzerland\, The Netherlands\, and UNESCO. Many of his fifty books of poetry and prose have been translated into fifteen languages and he has received important literary and environmental prizes in Mexico\, France\, Italy\, the United States and Serbia. Among his books available in English are The Child Poet\, Eyes to See Otherwise\, A Time of Angels\, Maria the Monarch\, and News of the Earth\, a biography of his relationship with the natural world and a wide-ranging selection of his work and writings in defense of the environment. \nFollowing will be a wine reception where you can meet Homero and bring any copies of his books for signing. \nTickets are $20 / $15 for members of Green-Wood and the Morbid Anatomy Patreon. \nClick here for our inclement weather policy. SUMMARY:The Art of the Condolence Letter
DESCRIPTION:We all struggle to find the right words. We want to convey sympathy\, admiration\, and support. And we want to express ourselves as well as possible. Why not take inspiration from another time? Condolence letters of the nineteenth century\, when death was ever present\, were mainstays of life—missives of comfort written straight from the heart. Death educator Amy Cunningham will lead a practical guide to crafting messages that heal and knowing what’s best left unsaid. Along the way\, she’ll share condolences written by luminaries including Thomas Jefferson\, Emily Dickinson\, Queen Victoria\, Marcel Proust\, and Ernest Hemingway. \n \nFree to attend\, RSVP recommended. SUMMARY:Furnishing a Tomb in Ancient Egypt
DESCRIPTION:Lid from a Sarcophagus\, ca. 1292-1075 B.C.E. Terracotta\, pigment\, 24 x 17 x 8 1/2 in.\, 40 lb. (61 x 43.2 x 21.6 cm\, 18.14kg). Brooklyn Museum\, Charles Edwin Wilbour Fund\, 37.1518E. Creative Commons-BY (Photo: Brooklyn Museum\, 37.1518E_PS1.jpg)\nAncient Egyptian kings like Tutankhamun could have anything he wanted for his tomb. But the king’s subjects\, ordinary middle-class Egyptians\, were forced to make choices about the objects they included in their tombs. They wanted to guarantee their entrance to the next world\, but they simply could not afford everything that royalty had. This lecture explores how Egyptians furnished their tombs on a budget. Their strategies included choosing cheaper materials\, combining two or more necessary objects into one item\, or even buying a coffin second hand. Examples of all these strategies will be illustrated and explained. \n \nThis evening is presented in partnership with Morbid Anatomy. \n \nEdward Bleiberg is Senior Curator of Egyptian Art at the Brooklyn Museum. He joined the Museum in 1998 from the University of Memphis\, Institute of Egyptian Art and Archaeology\, where he had been Director and Associate Professor. A Pittsburgh native\, he graduated from Haverford College in Pennsylvania. Dr. Bleiberg received an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. He is the author of several books and articles on the ancient Egyptian economy\, Egyptian coffins\, and the Jewish minority in ancient Egypt and ancient Rome. Exhibitions that Dr. Bleiberg has organized for Brooklyn include Jewish Life in Ancient Egypt\, Tree of Paradise: Jewish Mosaics from the Roman Empire\, To Live Forever: Egyptian Treasures from the Brooklyn Museum\, Soulful Creatures: Animal Mummies from ancient Egypt and Striking Power: Iconoclasm in Ancient Egypt. \n \n$5 for members of Green-Wood and BHS / $10 for non-members \n \nThis program takes place in our Modern Chapel just to the right after passing through the Gothic Arches at the main entrance. In 2011\, British entrepreneur Jon Underwood brought this concept to discussions of the most universal topic of all: death. SUMMARY:Winter Street Tree Care Workshop
DESCRIPTION: \nJoin Ashleigh Pettus\, Operations Manager for Trees New York\, and learn how to care for your street trees and help them thrive. Topics discussed will include watering\, mulching\, and tree bed gardening. We will also discuss why street trees are important to the urban environment. Click here to register directly for this day’s program. \n \nThe meeting location is Green-Wood’s Modern Chapel\, right off of the main entrance. \n \n*** \nGive Trees a Chance: Environmental Justice in South Brooklyn \nGreen-Wood’s own neighborhood\, Sunset Park\, is one of the fastest growing and most diverse neighborhoods in all of New York City. Visit TreesNY’s website\, www.treesny.org\, for more information and to RSVP for these free programs. \nFunding for this project is provided by the NYS Environmental Protection Fund as administered by the Environmental Justice Community Impact Grant Program of the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation.
