SUMMARY:Death Café
DESCRIPTION:The Death Café is inspired by the centuries-old European salon (or café)\, an informal gathering to discuss philosophical\, political or scientific ideas. In 2011\, British entrepreneur Jon Underwood brought this concept to discussions of the most universal topic of all: death. Underwood’s intention was to provide an opportunity to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” Today\, there are over 4\,400 Death Cafes in 26 countries around the world. \nGreen-Wood is proud to host monthly gatherings of the Death Café here in our beautiful\, modern chapel. Amy Cunningham\, death educator and creator of the Brooklyn-based blog TheInspiredFuneral.com\, invites participants to share their thoughts and feelings on death. It’s an opportunity for safe and open exchanges\, without an agenda. Tea and light snacks are provided. \n“A place for people to discuss our inevitable fate.” – Gothamist \n“It’s a reversal for American culture\, which for a long time has shied away from these conversations.” – Village Voice \n“[E]ncouraging people to talk about death more freely and naturally.” – Haaretz \nFree to attend\, RSVP recommended. Please register using the Eventbrite box below. \nThis program takes place in our Modern Chapel just to the right after passing through the Gothic Arches at the main entrance. All events will take place rain or shine. Click here for our inclement weather policy. \n \nMobile users: Please tap here for free registration.\n

SUMMARY:Dead Distillers Trolley Tour
DESCRIPTION: \nGreen-Wood is teaming up with our friends at Kings County Distillery to delve into the storied past of distilling in Brooklyn. The afternoon kicks off with a trolley tour of the cemetery’s “permanent residents” with whiskey connections\, including the one and only casualty of the Brooklyn Whiskey Wars of the late 1860s and early 1870s. Afterward\, the trolley will head to Kings County Distillery in the Brooklyn Navy Yard where visitors will see first-hand how whiskey is made and enjoy a tasting of four delectable varieties. \n \nThis tour is based upon the newly published book “Dead Distillers: A History of the Upstarts and Outlaws who Made American Spirits” by Colin Spoelman\, co-founder and Master Distiller at Kings County Distillery. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the distillery. \n \nYou must be 21 or older to participate in this tour; I.D. required. \n \n$35 for members of Green-Wood and BHS / $40 for non-members \n \nGreen-Wood trolley tours are fully accessible and ADA compliant. In order to accommodate a wheelchair or other mobility device on the trolley\, advance arrangements must be made. Please call (718) 210-3080\, ext. 1. Please note that portions of the tour take place outside the trolley and may require exiting the vehicle on multiple occasions. Please contact the Historic Fund for more information. \n \nFor this program you will check in at the Gothic Arches\, right at the main entrance. Trolley tours are run rain or shine\, with the exception of dangerous conditions as determined by Green-Wood. SUMMARY:Tree Stewardship
DESCRIPTION:Learn how you can play an active role in supporting the health of our urban forest\, including the basics of watering\, tree bed gardening\, and soil cultivation. \nThis program will take place outdoors and meet at 37th Street and 9th Avenue in Brooklyn. \nFree – visit the TreesNY website\, www.treesny.org\, for more information and to reserve your space. \nGIVE TREES A CHANCE\nEnvironmental Justice in South Brooklyn \nGreen-Wood’s own neighborhood\, Sunset Park\, is one of the fastest growing and most diverse neighborhoods in all of New York City. Yet\, it also faces serious environmental challenges. Car and truck exhaust from the Gowanus Expressway and industrial emissions from its small manufacturers create higher than average levels of harmful air pollution. Street trees to the rescue! They’re nature’s miracle workers: they intercept and absorb storm water runoff\, provide oxygen\, fight climate change\, and lower air temperatures. \nThe 6\,500 street trees of Sunset Park have a job to do. And they need all the help they can get! Together with TreesNY\, Green-Wood’s horticulture staff is training a team of tree advocates! If you care about the environment\, join us. TreesNY works with both youth and adult volunteers and works throughout the five boroughs of New York City. \nFunding for this project is provided by the NYS Environmental Protection Fund as administered by the Environmental Justice Community Impact Grant Program of the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation.

SUMMARY:A Fond History of Burial Garments
DESCRIPTION:Credit: Kate Hoover\nThe rule of simplicity that works so well in life also works great after death. Many families are now opting for burial shrouds instead of caskets to bury loved ones\, asserting greater creative control over the aesthetics of the traditional American funeral. Join death educator Amy Cunningham for an engaging discussion of how shrouds and garments have been used for over a millennia in cultures across the globe. She’ll also explore present-day\, eco-friendly shroud making\, including the work of several clever designers who hope we’ll start taking our final outfits as seriously as we select what we don every day. \n \nFree to attend\, RSVP recommended. Please register using the Eventbrite box below. \n \nClick here for our inclement weather policy. \n \nMobile users: Please tap here for free registration.\n

SUMMARY:Epilogues and Epitaphs
DESCRIPTION:The Long Story\nMost people wouldn’t equate “historically-informed Baroque chamber music” with “soul-blasting\, face-melting hot sauce fire”… at least not until they hear Augusta McKay Lodge. She and her band Voyage Sonique bring a gas torch to the works of a bygone era\, burning a path through a series of musical monuments to grief and remembrance. \n \nThe Short Story\nSometimes before we can move forward\, we must first look back to the past for a light. Let Augusta McKay Lodge and Voyage Sonique strike the match. \n \n$80 for members of Green-Wood and BHS / $85 for non-members \n \nThe Angel’s Share\, a new series of opera and chamber music concerts\, takes place in Green-Wood’s Catacombs. One of the oldest structures in the 478-acre National Historic Landmark Cemetery\, the Catacombs were built in the 1850s and are normally closed to the public. The series takes its name from the distiller’s term for whiskey that evaporates while maturing in the barrel\, thus going to the angels. \n \nEach performance includes a pre-concert reception at sunset overlooking New York harbor and the Manhattan skyline. \n \nPLEASE NOTE: Ticketholders must be 21 years or older. \n \nClick here for our inclement weather policy. \n \nMobile users: Please tap here to buy tickets.\n \n\nNot a Member?\nClick here for all of our membership levels and information. \nAlready a Member?\nClick the “Enter promotional code here (members\, use your ID#)” link in the bottom right corner of the ticket box and enter your ID number to apply your ticket discount. SUMMARY:Welcome to the Weird: Illustrated Lecture and Book Signing with Erik Davis
DESCRIPTION:As the world’s weather jumps the rails\, some have started referring to global warming as global weirding—and for good reason. Between the apocalyptic mutations of our times\, the emergence of what philosopher Graham Harman calls weird materialism\, and the growing popularity of psychedelia\, esoterica\, and other uncanny cultures\, the weird has become a key zone of contemporary thought and experience. In this talk\, Dr. Erik Davis—author of the new book High Weirdness: Drugs\, Esoterica\, and Visionary Experience in the Seventies—will deepen our historical\, conceptual\, and aesthetic sense of what it means to live in weird times. \n \nErik Davis is an author\, scholar\, podcaster\, and award-winning journalist based in San Francisco. He has been talking\, writing\, and presenting about alternative culture\, spirituality\, and media technology for over thirty years. A popular speaker and documentary talking head\, he also explores the “cultures of consciousness” on his weekly podcast Expanding Mind. He earned his PhD in religious studies at Rice University in 2015. \n \nBooks will also be available for sale and signing. \n \nTickets are $10 / $5 for members of Green-Wood and the “Morbid Anatomy Supporters” Patreon Members.

DESCRIPTION:The Long Story\nHenry Purcell wrote Dido & Aeneas in 1680\, but this tragic meditation on destiny\, love\, and death resonates just as powerfully today.
Join fellow nature lovers and urbanists to become licensed to take care of NYC’s street trees. \nThe 12-hour Citizen Pruner Course consists of 5 sessions – 4 in the classroom and 1 field outing. \nPrice: $100\, or $15 for residents of Sunset Park (zip codes 11232 and 11220) \nVisit the TreesNY website\, www.treesny.org\, for more information and to reserve your space.
