DESCRIPTION:Green-Wood has invited artist Aaron Asis to develop a series of experiential interventions designed to highlight the perception and significance of being “unseen” in Green-Wood.  Over the next nine months\, Asis will work to accentuate lesser appreciated elements of the cemetery’s physical environments\, and to celebrate them as places of both memorialization and of public congregation. \nunSeen Green will kick-off with a two week site-specific installation in Green-Wood’s Chapel – one of our most visible landmarks – and feature two musical encore events by percussionists Owen Weaver and Dennis Sullivan performing Tristan Perich’s large-scale work Impermanent for tubular bells and two-channel 1-bit electronics. \nFormal seating will be limited. DESCRIPTION: \nGreen-Wood’s historian\, Jeff Richman – author of the recently published The Gallant Samuel Sims – will discuss the life of Brooklyn native and Civil War hero Captain Samuel Sims\, and how the collections of papers and objects that tell his story miraculously were saved from a trash can in California and an old trunk in New York and wound up at Green-Wood.  Afterward\, Richman will lead a trolley tour exploring the cemetery’s rich Civil War history–including a visit to Captain Sims’s grave.  \nThis event has two parts\, with separate tickets for each part: \n\nThe free talk in the historic Green-Wood chapel. The afternoon kicks off with a trolley tour of the cemetery’s permanent residents with whiskey connections\, including the only casualty in the contentious Whiskey Wars of the mid-1800s. Afterward\, the trolley will head to Kings County Distillery in the Brooklyn Navy Yard to explore how whiskey is made and enjoy a tasting of four of their of their delectable products (which they have been producing since 2010). \n \nThis tour is based upon the newly published book “Dead Distillers: A History of the Upstarts and Outlaws who Made American Spirits” by Colin Spoelman\, co-founder and Master Distiller at Kings County Distillery. Author and funeral director Alexandra Kathryn Mosca leads us on an armchair tour of cemeteries both large and small (and we are talking really small) throughout the five boroughs. Her new book\, Gardens of Stone\, explores how memorials and monuments help to tell the tale of New York City\, from its humble beginnings to its emergence as a world capital. She will be joined by John Rousmaniere\, who has compiled an illustrated history of Evergreens Cemetery (which straddles Brooklyn and Queens)\, titled Green Oasis in Brooklyn\, and Richard L. SUMMARY:(Sold Out) Dead Distillers Trolley Tour
DESCRIPTION: \nGreen-Wood is teaming with our friends at Kings County Distillery to delve into the past and present of distilling\, Brooklyn style. The afternoon kicks off with a trolley tour of the cemetery’s permanent residents with whiskey connections\, including the only casualty in the contentious Whiskey Wars of the mid-1800s. Afterward\, the trolley will head to Kings County Distillery in the Brooklyn Navy Yard to explore how whiskey is made and enjoy a tasting of four of their of their delectable products (which they have been producing since 2010). \n \nThis tour is based upon the newly published book “Dead Distillers: A History of the Upstarts and Outlaws who Made American Spirits” by Colin Spoelman\, co-founder and Master Distiller at Kings County Distillery. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the distillery. \n \nLimited to 30 persons. This event is strictly 21+; I.D. required. This tour begins promptly at 3:30PM\, no late admission allowed. \n \n$35 for members of Green-Wood and BHS/$40 for non-members. \n \nGreen-Wood trolley tours are fully accessible and ADA compliant.
