SUMMARY:Death Café
DESCRIPTION:The Death Café is inspired by the centuries-old European salon (or café)\, an informal gathering to discuss philosophical\, political or scientific ideas. In 2011\, British entrepreneur Jon Underwood brought this concept to discussions of the most universal topic of all: death. Underwood’s intention was to provide an opportunity to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” Today\, there are over 4\,400 Death Cafes in 26 countries around the world. \nGreen-Wood is proud to host monthly gatherings of the Death Café here in our beautiful\, modern chapel. Amy Cunningham\, death educator and creator of the Brooklyn-based blog TheInspiredFuneral.com\, invites participants to share their thoughts and feelings on death. It’s an opportunity for safe and open exchanges\, without an agenda. Tea and light snacks are provided. \n“A place for people to discuss our inevitable fate.” – Gothamist \n“It’s a reversal for American culture\, which for a long time has shied away from these conversations.” – Village Voice \n“[E]ncouraging people to talk about death more freely and naturally.” – Haaretz \nFree to attend\, RSVP recommended. Please register using the Eventbrite box below. \nThis program takes place in our Modern Chapel just to the right after passing through the Gothic Arches at the main entrance. All events will take place rain or shine. Click here for our inclement weather policy. \n \nMobile users: Please tap here for free registration.\n

SUMMARY:Dead Distillers Trolley Tour
DESCRIPTION: \nGreen-Wood is teaming up with our friends at Kings County Distillery to delve into the storied past of distilling in Brooklyn. The afternoon kicks off with a trolley tour of the cemetery’s “permanent residents” with whiskey connections\, including the one and only casualty of the Brooklyn Whiskey Wars of the late 1860s and early 1870s. Afterward\, the trolley will head to Kings County Distillery in the Brooklyn Navy Yard where visitors will see first-hand how whiskey is made and enjoy a tasting of four delectable varieties. \n \nThis tour is based upon the newly published book “Dead Distillers: A History of the Upstarts and Outlaws who Made American Spirits” by Colin Spoelman\, co-founder and Master Distiller at Kings County Distillery. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the distillery. \n \nYou must be 21 or older to participate in this tour; I.D. required. \n \n$35 for members of Green-Wood and BHS / $40 for non-members \n \nGreen-Wood trolley tours are fully accessible and ADA compliant. SUMMARY:Death and Dying in the LGBTQ Community
DESCRIPTION:Credit: William Wood\nDeath is notable for its universality\, but death and dying are often experienced differently by those in the LGBTQ community. Disparities associated with social inequality as well as institutionalized homophobia and transphobia greatly affect the mental and physical health of LBGTQ persons worldwide. The Center for Disease Control stresses the “need for culturally competent medical care and prevention services” specific to this population. \nJoin death educator Amy Cunningham\, trust and estate attorney Michael Bond\, Esq.\, funeral celebrant Donna Henes\, and Teresa Theophano\, Assistant Director of Care Management Services at SAGE\, the advocacy group for LGBTQ elders\, in a conversation about death\, dying\, and funeral rituals in the LGBTQ community. Panelists will explore a range of topics\, including historic precedents (among them the discovery of a same sex couple’s tomb in ancient Egypt)\, the impact of the AIDS epidemic on the rise of alternative bereavement\, and the creation of non-traditional families when many churches and families of LGBTQ people turned their backs on – or failed to recognize – their LGBTQ members. Attendees will also learn about vital end-of-life related planning materials. \nFree to attend\, RSVP recommended. Please register using the Eventbrite box below. \nClick here for our inclement weather policy. \nMobile users: Please tap here for free registration.\n

SUMMARY:Film Screening: New York Non-Fiction (Short Films)
DESCRIPTION:In 1886\, The New York Times reported that “It is the ambition of the New Yorker to live upon Fifth Avenue\, to take his airings in the [Central] Park\, and to sleep with his fathers in Green-Wood.” On this night\, among the fathers and mothers resting in Green-Wood\, we celebrate New Yorkers\, all New Yorkers. From the neighborhood veterans\, creepy craigslist roommates\, and preachers on the corner\, to the weirdos wantonly disrupting traffic\, the activists fighting gentrification\, and the people who just gentrified your neighborhood\, this is a night of stories about you and the other 8.5 million people who live in this city. Whether they are liberated by their creativity or imprisoned by government contractors\, the protagonists of these short films are real and they are your neighbors. Come\, grab a slice\, and hang out with your city. \n7:45 PM: Doors Open\n8:30 PM: Live Music\n9:00 PM: Films Begin\n10:30 PM: After-Party Sponsored by Corona Extra\, Ketel One Family Made Vodka and Fever-Tree \nClick here to purchase tickets.

SUMMARY:Planting for the Next Century
DESCRIPTION: \n \nJoseph Charap\, Green-Wood’s Director of Horticulture\, and Sam Bishop\, TreesNY’s Education Director\, lead a walk about planting trees for the next century. \n \n*** \nGive Trees a Chance: Environmental Justice in South Brooklyn \nGreen-Wood’s own neighborhood\, Sunset Park\, is one of the fastest growing and most diverse neighborhoods in all of New York City. Yet\, it also faces serious environmental challenges. Car and truck exhaust from the Gowanus Expressway and industrial emissions from its small manufacturers create higher than average levels of harmful air pollution. Street trees to the rescue! They’re nature’s miracle workers: they intercept and absorb storm water runoff\, provide oxygen\, fight climate change\, and lower air temperatures. \nThe 6\,500 street trees of Sunset Park have a job to do. And they need all the help they can get! Together with TreesNY\, Green-Wood’s horticulture staff is training a team of tree advocates! If you care about the environment\, join us. Visit TreesNY’s website\, www.treesny.org\, for more information and to RSVP for these free programs. \nFunding for this project is provided by the NYS Environmental Protection Fund as administered by the Environmental Justice Community Impact Grant Program of the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Wild Nights with Emily
DESCRIPTION:Courtesy of Anna Stypko\nFresh off its SXSW premiere\, the dramatic comedy Wild Nights with Emily stars Molly Shannon as the poet Emily Dickinson. The film was inspired by an article in the New York Times that documented how infrared technologies restored erasures that hid romantic content in Dickinson’s letters. The poet’s persona\, popularized since her death\, was that of a reclusive spinster – a delicate wallflower\, too sensitive for this world. This film explores her passionate\, vivacious side that was covered up for years – most notably Emily’s lifelong romantic relationship with another woman (Susan Ziegler). After Emily died\, a rivalry emerged when her brother’s mistress (Amy Seimetz) along with editor T.W. Higginson (Brett Gelman) published a book of Emily’s poems. Irreverent and surreal\, Wild Nights was one of “The 50 Most Anticipated American Independent Films of 2018” (Filmmaker Magazine); you will never look at Dickinson the same way again. \n7:45 PM: Doors Open\n8:30 PM: Live Music\n9:00 PM: Film Begins\n10:30 PM: Q&A\n11:00 PM: After-Party Sponsored by Corona Extra\, Ketel One Family Made Vodka and Fever-Tree \nClick here to purchase tickets.

SUMMARY:The Doorway to Joe: The Art of Joe Coleman
DESCRIPTION:A Conversation with the Artist \n \n“If P.T. Barnum had hired Breughel or Bosch to paint sideshow banners they might have resembled the art of Joe Coleman.” – The New York Times \n \n“Terrible things happen in Joe Coleman’s paintings. Flesh rots. Sores weep. The flames of hell burn brightly. Perversion runs rampant. Things fall apart: Bodies. Cities. The whole social order. Yet there’s beauty here\, too: The colors dazzle\, the detail astounds. And a stalwart symmetry surrounds his aberrant images\, a symmetry born of both faith and fear” – Nancy Shulins\, Associated Press \n \nRenowned iconoclast and painter Joe Coleman sits down for a conversation with Harold Schechter\, professor of American literature and popular culture at CUNY’s Queens College. The reception will include an exclusive sneak peak of the upcoming feature documentary about Coleman. \n \nThis program is presented in partnership with Morbid Anatomy and takes place in Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel\, just a short distance inside the main entrance at 5th Avenue and 25th Street. \n \n$15 for members of Green-Wood and BHS / $20 for non-members. \n \nClick here for our inclement weather policy. \n \nMobile users: Please tap here to buy tickets.\n \n\nNot a Member?\nClick here for all of our membership levels and information. \nAlready a Member?\nClick the “Enter promotional code here (members\, use your ID#)” link in the bottom right corner of the ticket box and enter your ID number to apply your ticket discount. SUMMARY:Street Tree Care
DESCRIPTION: \n \nJoin your fellow environmentalists as we remove litter and weeds from the tree beds\, cultivate the soil\, and provide water and mulch for street trees in Sunset Park.

SUMMARY:After the Funeral: Memorializing Loved Ones
DESCRIPTION:Credit: Sybil Sage\n \n \nAfter the funeral is over\, how do we begin memorializing the precious memories of a loved one? While traditional acts – such as published obituaries\, grave markers\, scrap books\, and stories at the dinner table – are important and relevant\, there are new and exciting ways emerging on how to preserve a person’s life\, wisdom\, and cherished values. \n \nJoin death educator Amy Cunningham for a discussion about capturing the true legacy of a loved one. Over the past several years\, she has worked with hundreds of families to ensure that the rituals around memorializing feel true and right for each family. Learn about creating unique keepsakes\, whether it is the form of textiles\, artwork\, charitable donations\, or readings. She will also explore how digital platforms can provide an ideal space for sharing stories and memories that are easily accessible. Discover what might feel right for your family. \n \nFree to attend\, RSVP recommended. SUMMARY:Tree Stewardship
DESCRIPTION: \nTrees New York’s Tree Stewardship Training is designed to train and mobilize New Yorkers so that they can play an active role in supporting the health of our urban forest. Trees New York’s Environmental Educators teach lessons on the value of a healthy urban forest and the importance of volunteer efforts. Following each lesson\, volunteers steward street trees. Trees New York’s Environmental Educators work alongside volunteers to guide their stewardship efforts and answer questions. \nTrees New York works with both youth and adult volunteers and works throughout the five boroughs of New York City. Our target neighborhoods for 2018 include: Greenpoint\, Western Queens and Northern Manhattan. \nVolunteer stewardship activities include: \nTree bed clean up and soil cultivation – In addition to being unsightly\, compacted soil and litter block the movement of oxygen\, water and nutrients to tree roots. Volunteers remove litter and weeds from tree beds and loosen up the surface soil with hand cultivators\nWatering Trees – New York City street trees live in permanent drought conditions. All trees\, especially newly planted trees\, need thorough and deep watering during the spring and summer. Volunteers water trees using buckets and hoses. \nMulching – Mulch conserves water\, moderates soil temperatures\, improves soil structure and mitigates damage from dogs\, people\, de-icing salts and cleaning agents. Volunteers mulch trees with mulch or woodchips. \nTree Bed Gardening – Flowers beautify the streetscape\, add enriching organic matter to the soil and help deter people from walking on tree beds. In the spring\, volunteers plant annual flowers such as impatiens\, coleus and begonias and in the fall\, we plant bulbs such as muscari\, crocus and daffodil. \n*** \nGive Trees a Chance: Environmental Justice in South Brooklyn \nGreen-Wood’s own neighborhood\, Sunset Park\, is one of the fastest growing and most diverse neighborhoods in all of New York City. Visit TreesNY’s website\, www.treesny.org\, for more information and to reserve your space. \nFunding for this project is provided by the NYS Environmental Protection Fund as administered by the Environmental Justice Community Impact Grant Program of the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation.
