SUMMARY:Pencil Passion
DESCRIPTION: \nRing in the new school year with a look at the hidden history inside your pencil case. Those age-old writing tools may seem humdrum\, but in the early years of pencil production in America\, the tiny tools were the focus of fierce competition. American companies\, including several in New York\, vied for customers through new ideas\, designs\, and advertisements. In Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel\, we’ll explore the history\, development\, and simple appeal of the pencil with Caroline Weaver\, lifelong pencil enthusiast and owner of the new Lower East Side shop CW Pencils. Caroline will discuss the crowded pencil market of the 19th and early 20th century\, including the innovations of successful pencil man Eberhard Faber\, buried at Green-Wood in 1879. Beautiful and varied examples of pencils from Caroline’s personal collection will be on display\, along with historic advertisements and other objects. After the talk\, the Green-Wood trolley will bring you to Faber’s monument to pay your respect to the pencil king – and do a grave rubbing using some of his storied graphite\, too. \n \nThis event has two parts\, with separate tickets for each part: \n\nThe free talk in the historic Green-Wood chapel.\nA guided trolley tour immediately following the talk. Tickets are $15 for members of the Green-Wood Historic Fund and BHS and $20 for non-members.\n\nPlease include both free talk tickets and trolley tour tickets in your order if you would like to attend both parts of the event. SUMMARY:Playing First: Early Baseball Lives at Green-Wood
DESCRIPTION: \nJoin Thomas W. Gilbert\, baseball historian and author\, to celebrate his newly published book Playing First: Early Baseball Lives at Brooklyn’s Green-Wood Cemetery. Gilbert is an expert in baseball’s 19th-century New York City and Brooklyn origins\, and Green-Wood’s history there is unmatched – an astounding number of early baseball innovators and players are interred at the cemetery. Playing First is the culmination of Gilbert’s extensive research into the little known professional\, political\, and military lives of these baseball pioneers. In Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel\, Gilbert will reveal many fascinating stories included in his newly published book\, including the truth about what actually killed famed baseball martyr James Creighton\, and how a feud between baseball and cricket in early America changed Creighton’s legacy forever. After the talk\, Gilbert will sign books before leading a trolley tour of baseball pioneers with Green-Wood Historian Jeff Richman. \n \nThis event has two parts\, with separate tickets for each part: \n\nThe free talk in the historic Green-Wood chapel.\nA guided trolley tour immediately following the talk. SUMMARY:Media Movers & Shakers\, Then & Now
DESCRIPTION: \nExplore the frenzied world of New York City news and media. This panel\, featuring Untapped Cities founder Michelle Young\, journalist and urban planner Julia Vitullo-Martin\, and Brokelyn News Editor David Colon\, will trace the early boom days of New York City newspapers to the current upheaval in media. In the 19th century\, the pioneers of news and publishing loomed large in New York society\, and they made their impact on the landscape\, too\, by building massive and imposing headquarters downtown. Many of these early players are now buried together at Green-Wood\, including Horace Greeley\, founder of the New York Tribune; James Harper\, founder of Harper & Brothers; and Henry Raymond\, founder of the New York Times. But the media world doesn’t stand still for long\, and our panelists will detail the seismic shifts the industry has endured in the 20th and 21st centuries. Media has moved from downtown flagships\, to uptown rented space\, to bloggers working from their living rooms. Where will it go next? Young\, Vitullo-Martin\, and Colon will take a stab at answering that question. Following the talk\, a trolley tour will visit the monuments of the great newspaper men of the 19th century. \n \nThis event has two parts\, with separate tickets for each part: \n\nThe free talk in Green-Wood’s modern chapel (directly to the right of the gothic arches at the 25th Street and 5th Avenue).\nA guided trolley tour immediately following the talk. Tickets are $15 for members of the Green-Wood Historic Fund and BHS and $20 for non-members.\n\nPlease include both free talk tickets and trolley tour tickets in your order if you would like to attend both parts of the event. SUMMARY:What Was The Gilded Age? (And Are We Living in A Second One?)
DESCRIPTION: \nHistorian\, author\, and professor Edward T. O’Donnell speaks about his new book on the influential reformer Henry George and the tumultuous period in America known as the Gilded Age (1870-1900). As financial fortunes were soaring ever-higher for a small portion of society\, Henry George emerged in the 1880s as a prominent reformer warning against the threats of increasing wealth disparity\, inequality\, and corporate influence in politics. He played a key role in popularizing some of the foundational ideas of progressivism that shaped U.S. social and economic policy in the 20th century. Today\, George’s philosophy is more relevant than ever as America confronts similar questions about poverty\, inequality\, and corporate power in what some have called a Second Gilded Age. After O’Donnell’s enlightening discussion\, take a trolley ride through Green-Wood to visit the monuments of Henry George and other influential reformers. Seating is limited for both the talk and the trolley tour\, and reservations are recommended. \n \nGreen-Wood trolley tours are fully accessible and ADA compliant. \n \nClick here for our inclement weather policy. \n \nMobile users: Please tap here to buy tickets.\n \n\nNot a Member?\nClick here for all of our membership levels and information. \nAlready a Member?\nClick the “Enter promotional code here (members\, use your ID#)” link in the bottom right corner of the ticket box and enter your ID number to apply your ticket discount. SUMMARY:Common Shade: Marking Our Graves
DESCRIPTION:Credit: Steven Acres\n \nA quick stroll through Green-Wood makes evident the myriad styles in which people memorialize friends\, family\, or themselves. And just like any other visual art\, popularity of styles shift and change with the cultural at large. Join Eva Bowerman\, Chair of the New York Chapter of the Association for Gravestone Studies\, for a look at American monuments and memorialization through the years. Why were certain styles more popular than others\, and what outside forces influenced prevailing memorialization customs? Eva’s background in art history informs her view of the shifting popularity of styles and customs regarding tombstones and monuments. She’ll examine the American monument landscape at large\, and touch on specific examples you can find in Green-Wood. After the presentation\, a discussion will follow with Eva and Common Shade moderator Evan Michelson. \n \nMorbid Anatomy Museum and Green-Wood present Common Shade – a dialogue existing on the borderlands between the living and the dead. SUMMARY:(Sold Out) Love Immemorial
DESCRIPTION:Credit: Nancy Rosin\n \nThis event is sold out. Make sure you never miss out on tickets again! Green-Wood members get access to tickets weeks before the general public. Join today. \nJoin Nancy Rosin\, President of the National Valentine Collectors Association\, for this time-traveling presentation on valentines and other items that serve as expressions of love. In today’s world\, valentines are generally relegated to children’s classrooms\, but in the Victorian era (and before) there was a real need to give and receive tokens of love. Life was often shorter\, distances longer\, and sometimes friends\, family\, and lovers said goodbye without knowing if they’d ever communicate again. Objects of affection – be they romantic cards\, hand-carved coins\, locks of hair\, or more – were touchstones for those left behind. Those traditions continued in death and mourning\, and in many ways influenced the way we celebrate our modern Valentine’s Day. \nIn Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel\, Rosin will discuss the history of this time-honored tradition\, and display many pieces from her impressive collection of historic items. After the talk\, a trolley tour through Green-Wood (including toasty beverages!) will feature expressions of love rendered in stone\, on the monuments and memorials of many permanent residents. \n$20 for members of Green-Wood and BHS / $25 for non-members. Seating is limited\, and reservations are recommended. \nGreen-Wood trolley tours are fully accessible and ADA compliant. \nClick here for our inclement weather policy.

SUMMARY:Washington’s Immortals
DESCRIPTION: \nIn August 1776\, the American Revolution was on the verge of a disastrous end. General Washington found his troops outmanned and outmaneuvered at the Battle of Brooklyn\, fought on land now part of Green-Wood. SUMMARY:Common Shade: A Discussion with Anna Sale of WNYC's Death\, Sex\, and Money
DESCRIPTION:Credit: Steven Acres\n \nOn her podcast Death\, Sex & Money\, Anna Sale talks with writers\, actors\, adventurers – and everyday people – about some intensely personal topics. She gets her guests to open up about things that we tend to worry about often but openly discuss much less frequently – including death. For this year’s first installment of Common Shade\, we’ll welcome Anna to Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel and get her to do the talking. Hosted in Green-Wood’s intimate Historic Chapel\, Common Shade will cultivate a social space for death – a place to examine death’s prevalence in our lives\, and its shifting place in history\, art\, culture\, and society. Drawing from Green-Wood’s bucolic setting and using history as our anchor\, each night’s presentations will include dialogue and interviews with guests. Together with artists\, practitioners\, scholars\, and peers\, Common Shade discussions will explore our humble acknowledgments of and engagements with death. \n \n$20 for members of Green-Wood\, Morbid Anatomy Museum and BHS/$25 for non-members.
