SUMMARY:Let's Do Right By Jim!
DESCRIPTION:The Creighton Monument\, as it appeared in the 19th century.\nGreen-Wood Cemetery and SABR-NYC Invite You on a One-Time Only Private TourTo See Early Baseball Graves and Rare Baseball Items from Green-Wood’s ArchivesTo Help Raise Money to Restore the Creighton Monument\nHis death at 21 shocked the baseball world. He never signed a contract. He is not a member of the baseball Hall of Fame. But in the early 1860s Jim Creighton revolutionized the game of baseball. He threw the first fastball\, making the pitcher a weapon and transforming the game itself from a hitting contest into today’s sublime battle for control of the strike zone. His baseball-themed grave monument was\, from its earliest days– and is – a place of pilgrimage for ballplayers and lovers of the game. \nToday\, Jim needs us. Over the years\, the marble pedestal and “lemon peel” baseball that once crowned Creighton’s grave have disappeared. Green-Wood Cemetery has established a fund to recarve this missing piece and restore this monument to its original state. To date\, enough money has been raised that we are optimistic that with a little help from SABR-NYC and friends\, we can reach our goal of completing the work – and inviting donors back for the unveiling — in 2014. \n \nA sketch of the Creighton monument restoration. The original top of the Creighton Monument.\nAt Jim Creighton’s grave for the commemoration of the 150th anniversary of his death in 2012.\n \nOn October 18\, 2013\, exactly a century and a year after Jim Creighton’s death\, Green-Wood will offer a unique tour for SABR members and their friends. Green-Wood historian Jeff Richman and author Tom Gilbert will lead a tour of the graves of Creighton\, Henry Chadwick\, James Whyte Davis\, Charles Ebbets and other early baseball heroes. They will give graveside talks on topics such as the Mystery of Jim Creighton’s Demise\, Baseball’s Baffling Paternity Case\, and What Happened at Charles Ebbets’ Funeral That May Have Doomed the Brooklyn Dodgers. Guests will also be treated to a rare look into Green-Wood’s archives\, including a great Brookyn Dodger letterhead\, with a note signed by Charles Ebbets\, and a note signed by President Theodore Roosevelt\, who dubbed Henry Chadwick “The Father of Baseball\,” as well as other signatures of early baseball greats. \nThe tour is limited to 60 participants (Warning: this event is expected to sell out quickly). Guests will ride in comfort in Green-Wood’s trolley. The tour will take place at 5:00 p.m. on Friday\, October 18th\, 2013. Along with a bit of baseball time travel\, guests will enjoy stunning fall foliage\, breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline\, and the sunset over New York Harbor. Afterwards\, please join us for – what else? — beer and hotdogs (the inventor of the hot dog is at Green-Wood!) in Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel. \nTickets to the tour are $125\, of which all but $25 is tax-deductible. Additional contributions are gratefully accepted. Please use the following box to donate to theJim Creighton Monument Restoration Fund and to reserve your place for the tour:

SUMMARY:1 p.m. Restoring Glory to Creighton
DESCRIPTION:James Creighton was baseball’s first megastar. Revolutionizing the pitcher’s role and changing the game forever\, his shocking death at the age of 21 made him baseball’s first martyr. Buried at Green-Wood in 1862\, Creighton’s grave quickly took its place in the pantheon of baseball meccas – his obelisk\, topped with an iconic lemon-peel baseball (in marble)\, became a place of pilgrimage. However\, that charming marble baseball disappeared long ago. Now\, thanks to the work of Green-Wood historian Jeff Richman\, baseball historian Tom Gilbert and an impressive lineup of loyal baseball fans\, the marble top is back. Join us on our trolley as we drive out to Jim Creighton’s final resting place–with a guided tour by Richman and Gilbert of baseball sites along the way–for a celebration of this 19th-century phenom and the rededication of his monument. \nThis is a free event\, but please register your group using the Eventbrite box below so that we can gauge response. We encourage you to consider making an optional donation with your reservation\, to ensure our ability to continue to offer these events free of charge. \nGreen-Wood trolley tours are fully accessible and ADA compliant. SUMMARY:1 p.m. Designing Green-Wood: New York’s First Rural Greenspace
DESCRIPTION: \n \nGreen-Wood owes much of its splendor to the genius of its original designer – landscape architect David Bates Douglass. The twists and turns of Green-Wood’s 40 miles of pathways purposefully create visual surprises around each bend. In 1838\, Douglass eschewed the long vistas of unobstructed open space\, in favor of rolling hills and meandering\, serpentine walkways. \nJoin Superintendent of Grounds\, Art Presson\, in Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel for a talk on David Bates Douglass’s intent and original design. Then board the trolley for a tour of what’s changed\, what’s stayed the same\, and how the Green-Wood landscape has evolved over 175 years. \nThis event has two parts\, with separate tickets for each part: \n1. The free talk in the historic Green-Wood chapel. \n2. A guided trolley tour immediately following the talk. Tickets are $15 for members of the Green-Wood Historic Fund and $20 for nonmembers. This portion of the event is sold out. \nPlease include both free talk tickets and trolley tour tickets in your order if you would like to attend both parts of the event. Seating is limited for both the talk and the trolley tour\, and reservations are recommended. \nFunding generously provided by the New York State Council on the Arts. SUMMARY:2 p.m. Honoring Fearless Flo
DESCRIPTION:credit: Thanhouser Company Film Preservation\, Inc.\nWe celebrate the life and career of Florence LaBadie\, a young silent film sensation in the early 20th-century. Appearing in over 180 films over the course of her short life\, LaBadie was a stunningly beautiful actress who enjoyed tremendous fame in her day. A tragic car accident in 1917 cut her life short at the age of 29\, and she was buried at Green-Wood shortly thereafter. Mysteriously\, neither a gravestone nor a monument was ever placed at her burial site and her resting place has remained unmarked for nearly a century. SUMMARY:5 p.m. A Centennial Performance of Isadora Duncan’s Grande Marche
DESCRIPTION:Credit: Catherine Gallant\n \nAfter becoming one of the most innovative and exciting figures of 20th-century dance\, Isadora Duncan endured the tragic accidental deaths of her two young children. The experience filled her subsequent choreographic works with mournful yearning\, spiritual redemption and powerful images of rebirth. Now we present those dances amidst the serene landscape of Green-Wood. \nDancer and choreographer Catherine Gallant has\, for over thirty years\, choreographed her own dances and worked to preserve and enliven the dances of Isadora Duncan. She and her company\, Catherine Gallant/DANCE\, will perform Duncan’s “Grande Marche” (1914) set to the music of Schubert\, plus other late-period Duncan dances born of her sorrow. The company will then turn to works of hope and rebirth\, set to a Nocturne and Polonaise of Chopin\, followed by Duncan’s dances of exuberance and light to celebrate the rising of the sun. \n$25 for members of Green-Wood / $30 for nonmembers. \nClick here for our inclement weather policy. \n \n \n \n \n \n\nNot a Member?\nClick here for all of our membership levels and information. \nAlready a Member?\nClick the “Enter promotional code here (members\, use your ID#)” link in the bottom right corner of the ticket box and enter your ID number to apply your ticket discount. SUMMARY:7:30 p.m. Our Town
DESCRIPTION:Green-Wood presents\nOUR TOWN\nThornton Wilder’s 1938 classic\, directed by James Presson. \nEnjoy a classic piece of American theater amidst the timeless beauty of Green-Wood Cemetery. Our Town tells the story of Emily Webb and George Gibbs of Grover’s Corners\, New Hampshire\, a small New England town at the turn of the twentieth century. But the lessons of Grover’s Corners stretch far beyond the sleepy town\, as the play explores the universal human experiences of life\, love\, marriage\, death and dying. And while the play stays true to universal themes of Wilder’s world-renowned work\, Green-Wood’s Our Town is distinctly Brooklyn – the cast is diverse\, the music is modern\, and the vibe is decidedly urban. \nAs the sun sets on Green-Wood’s stunningly unique landscape\, you will be immersed in a fresh new take on this American classic\, helmed by innovative director James Presson. Presson is a graduate of the theatre programs at Fordham University and Moscow Art Theatre and he serves as the co-Artistic Director of Less Than Rent Theatre\, a position he has held since its founding in 2001. He is also the recipient of the 2013/2014 Dramatists Guild Fellowship for the book of his musical\, Outlaws. \nOur Town stars Cory Asinofsky\, Mayaa Boateng\, Amanda Brooklyn\, Ben Diserens\, Zoe Farmingdale\, Patrick Fleury\, Joe Flynn\, Yadin Goldman\, Rachel B. Joyce\, Kumiko Konishi\, Roland Lane\, Ashley Lanyon\, and Jacob Presson. \nOriginal music and arrangements by Brendan Fox. Scenic Design by Daniel Geggatt. Costume Design by Sara Donovan.
