SUMMARY:Common Shade: Marking Our Graves
DESCRIPTION:Credit: Steven Acres\n \nA quick stroll through Green-Wood makes evident the myriad styles in which people memorialize friends\, family\, or themselves. And just like any other visual art\, popularity of styles shift and change with the cultural at large. Join Eva Bowerman\, Chair of the New York Chapter of the Association for Gravestone Studies\, for a look at American monuments and memorialization through the years. Why were certain styles more popular than others\, and what outside forces influenced prevailing memorialization customs? Eva’s background in art history informs her view of the shifting popularity of styles and customs regarding tombstones and monuments. She’ll examine the American monument landscape at large\, and touch on specific examples you can find in Green-Wood. After the presentation\, a discussion will follow with Eva and Common Shade moderator Evan Michelson. \n \nMorbid Anatomy Museum and Green-Wood present Common Shade – a dialogue existing on the borderlands between the living and the dead. Hosted in Green-Wood’s intimate Historic Chapel\, Common Shade will cultivate a social space for death – a place to examine death’s prevalence in our lives\, and its shifting place in history\, art\, culture\, and society. Drawing from Green-Wood’s bucolic setting and using history as our anchor\, each night’s presentations will include dialogue and interviews with guests. Together with artists\, practitioners\, scholars\, and peers\, Common Shade discussions will explore our humble acknowledgments of and engagements with death. \n \n$25 for non-members / $20 for members of Green-Wood\, BHS and the Morbid Anatomy Museum. Cash bar (free for Green-Wood Key Holders) available at each event. \n \nClick here for our inclement weather policy. \n \nMobile users: Please tap here to buy tickets.\n \n\nNot a Member?\nClick here for all of our membership levels and information. \nAlready a Member?\nClick the “Enter promotional code here (members\, use your ID#)” link in the bottom right corner of the ticket box and enter your ID number to apply your ticket discount. SUMMARY:(Sold Out) Love Immemorial
DESCRIPTION:Credit: Nancy Rosin\n \nThis event is sold out. Make sure you never miss out on tickets again! Green-Wood members get access to tickets weeks before the general public. Join today. \nJoin Nancy Rosin\, President of the National Valentine Collectors Association\, for this time-traveling presentation on valentines and other items that serve as expressions of love. In today’s world\, valentines are generally relegated to children’s classrooms\, but in the Victorian era (and before) there was a real need to give and receive tokens of love. Life was often shorter\, distances longer\, and sometimes friends\, family\, and lovers said goodbye without knowing if they’d ever communicate again. Objects of affection – be they romantic cards\, hand-carved coins\, locks of hair\, or more – were touchstones for those left behind. Those traditions continued in death and mourning\, and in many ways influenced the way we celebrate our modern Valentine’s Day. \nIn Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel\, Rosin will discuss the history of this time-honored tradition\, and display many pieces from her impressive collection of historic items. After the talk\, a trolley tour through Green-Wood (including toasty beverages!) will feature expressions of love rendered in stone\, on the monuments and memorials of many permanent residents. \n$20 for members of Green-Wood and BHS / $25 for non-members. Seating is limited\, and reservations are recommended. \nGreen-Wood trolley tours are fully accessible and ADA compliant. \nClick here for our inclement weather policy.

SUMMARY:Honoring "Too Late" Davis: An Unveiling and Trolley Tour
DESCRIPTION: \nJames Whyte Davis\, an early baseball pioneer who served as the president of the Knickerbocker Base Ball Club of New York City from 1858 to 1860\, had a plan to get himself the Green-Wood monument he felt his legacy deserved. In 1892\, long after he had played his last game\, Davis announced a request: that every current player and official of the National League give 10 cents to pay for a home plate-shaped monument. It would be a true group effort by the world of baseball to memorialize one of its heroes. Davis would be dressed in his old Knickerbocker uniform\, and wrapped in the team’s original flag. He even wrote a glowing epitaph that would grace this crowdfunded monument. \nBut by the 1890s\, the sport had moved on without Davis; most players didn’t even know who he was. So this baseball trailblazer was buried in his uniform and team flag\, but no monument marked his grave. That all changes on May 14th\, thanks to the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) and Major League Baseball. At 10:00am\, we’ll unveil a new monument built to Davis’ specifications – including that epitaph he wrote in which he references his old nickname “Too Late\,” apparently earned because he was often tardy to his own games. Celebrate Davis recognition at the free unveiling\, then join Green-Wood Historian Jeff Richman and baseball expert\, historian\, and author Tom Gilbert for a trolley tour of early baseball pioneers at Green-Wood – many of whom knew and played with the man of the hour. \nThis event has two parts\, with separate tickets for each part: \n\nThe free unveiling of the monument.\nA guided trolley tour immediately following the talk\, $15 for members of Green-Wood and BHS / $20 for nonmembers.\n\n \nGreen-Wood trolley tours are fully accessible and ADA compliant. In order to accommodate a wheelchair or other mobility device on the trolley\, advance arrangements must be made. Please call (718) 210-3080\, ext. 1. Please note that portions of the tour take place outside the trolley and may require exiting the vehicle on multiple occasions. SUMMARY:(Sold Out) Common Shade: Death\, Dying\, and Buddhist Insights
DESCRIPTION:Credit: Steven Acres\nThis event is sold out. Make sure you never miss out on tickets again! Green-Wood members get access to tickets weeks before the general public. Join today. \n \nAlthough it may sound counterintuitive\, taking time to contemplate death often works to reduce anxiety and suffering and increase happiness. Meditation and Buddhist practice have always advocated for the daily reflection on death: its inevitability and unpredictability. Confronting death helps us to overcome our fear and to develop an acceptance of death as a natural part of life. It serves to remind us of the preciousness of our time\, and helps lessen the surprise and anguish when loved ones pass away. Discuss the how’s and why’s behind the practice with Bhante Suddhāso\, a Western Buddhist monk and co-founder of Buddhist Insights\, an organization connecting laypeople to monastics in both secular and non-secular spaces. He’ll lead a guided meditation in Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel before answering questions from Common Shade host Evan Michelson and you. \n \n$20 for members of Green-Wood\, Morbid Anatomy Museum and BHS/$25 for non-members. Drinks will be available for purchase during the event (free for Key Holder members with proof of membership). \n \nGreen-Wood trolley tours are fully accessible and ADA compliant. Historic Green-Wood structures\, like the Historic Chapel\, may not be fully accessible for some individuals. Please call (718) 210-3080\, ext. 1 for more information. \n \nClick here for our inclement weather policy.
