SUMMARY:11 a.m. No Longer Forgotten: Honoring Officers from the Mexican-American War
DESCRIPTION: \n \nOn July 13\, 1848\, military men\, political leaders and citizens gathered at Green-Wood for the interment of six officers who served in the New York Infantry during the Mexican-American War. Five of them had died in the war; the sixth\, who had been sent to Mexico by New York City’s Common Council to retrieve the bodies of the others\, died of disease on his way back. A large lot was devoted to their burial and a suitable monument to their sacrifice was to be placed at its center. But that never happened and their graves were never marked. Now\, 164 years later\, each of them will finally have a memorial. DESCRIPTION: \n \nMore than 150 years before Americans adorned their homes with mass-produced prints from Pottery Barn or Home Depot\, the business team of Nathaniel Currier and James Merritt Ives created an industry of art for ordinary people. \nThe firm of Currier & Ives proclaimed itself to be the “Grand Central Depot for Cheap and Popular Prints” and singlehandedly democratized art in America. Over the span of their careers\, Currier and Ives produced more than seven thousand prints that sold in the millions of copies. At one time\, 95 percent of all lithographs in circulation in the United States were from the firm of Currier & Ives. Nathaniel Currier and James Merritt Ives are both interred at Green-Wood. \nJoin Robert K. Newman\, a third-generation owner of the Old Print Shop on Lexington Avenue in Manhattan and expert on Currier & Ives\, for an in-depth look at this legendary team. Messinger\, associate curator of Modern and contemporary art\, will lead a tour of the landmark exhibition\, “George Bellows.” Bellows\, interred at Green-Wood\, was one of the leading realist painters of the early 20th century and this exhibition is the first comprehensive showing of his work in a half century. At noon\, relax in the Petrie Café\, overlooking Central Park\, with lunch. Then it’s off to the American Wing with Green-Wood Historian Jeff Richman\, for a tour of artwork by other Green-Wood luminaries: stained glass windows by Louis Comfort Tiffany and John La Farge; silver\, jewelry and presentation vases by Tiffany & Co.; paintings by Asher B. Durand\, William Merritt Chase\, and Eastman Johnson; sculpture by Thomas Crawford\, and much\, much more. DESCRIPTION: \n \n \nGreen-Wood is the final resting place of Irish immigrant and lawyer William Sampson and Judge DeWitt Clinton – the two major players in an 1813 court case that was the first-ever test of religious freedom in America. In partnership with NYU’s Glucksman Ireland House and the New York Irish History Roundtable\, Green-Wood will honor this event and its major players on its 200th anniversary. \nAt the site of DeWitt Clinton and his stunning bronze statue\, you’ll see award-winning playwright and NYU graduate student Steve DiUbaldo’s dramatic interpretation of this landmark event – adapted from William Sampson’s published account of the case. Judge DeWitt Clinton will preside as the outdoor performance reveals Sampson’s artful argument for American freedom of religion. After the reading\, both Clinton and William Sampson will be honored as NYU’s Ireland House visits each grave for a wreath-laying ceremony.  \n$15 for nonmembers. SUMMARY:1 p.m. Life and Death Along Sportsmen’s Row: Brooklyn’s Eighth Avenue and Green-Wood
DESCRIPTION: \n \nIn the 1890s\, a swath of Eighth Avenue was grandly deemed Sportsmen’s Row for the many residents in horseracing as owners\, trainers\, and jockeys. Meanwhile\, they lived among men of prominence and success in politics\, business\, law\, and the arts. Lucas Rubin has explored their intertwined lives in his 2012 book\, Brooklyn’s Sportsmen’s Row: Politics\, Society\, and the Sporting Life on Northern Eighth Avenue. And in fact\, much of Rubin’s research was done in Green-Wood’s fruitful archives.  \nNow\, Rubin offers something of a final chapter\, a “where are they now?” of these early Brooklyn residents. Just as their lives came together in fascinating ways\, death brought many together again – right here in Green-Wood.  \nThis talk will take a closer look at some of the book’s more peripheral characters – and some of Eighth Avenue’s most renowned denizens.
