SUMMARY:Gardens of Stone: Book Talk and Panel
DESCRIPTION:Credit: Art Presson\nNew York City is famous for many things – hot dogs\, the Empire State Building\, pigeons. And add to that list cemeteries. Author and funeral director Alexandra Kathryn Mosca leads us on an armchair tour of cemeteries both large and small (and we are talking really small) throughout the five boroughs. Her new book\, Gardens of Stone\, explores how memorials and monuments help to tell the tale of New York City\, from its humble beginnings to its emergence as a world capital. She will be joined by John Rousmaniere\, who has compiled an illustrated history of Evergreens Cemetery (which straddles Brooklyn and Queens)\, titled Green Oasis in Brooklyn\, and Richard L. Simpson\, who recently published a book on Staten Island’s Moravian Cemetery. \nFree to attend\, RSVP recommended. Please register using the Eventbrite box below. \nThis program takes place in our Modern Chapel just to the right after passing through the Gothic Arches at the main entrance. All events will take place rain or shine. Click here for our inclement weather policy. \nMobile users: Please tap here for free registration.

SUMMARY:Death Café
DESCRIPTION: \n \n \nThe Death Café is a simple concept. It was inspired by the centuries-old European salon (or café) where people gathered informally to discuss philosophical\, political or scientific ideas. In 2011\, British entrepreneur Jon Underwood brought the concept to discussions of the most universal topic of all: death. Underwood’s intention was to provide an opportunity to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” Today\, there are over 1\,500 death cafes in 26 countries around the world. \n \nBeginning in January 2017\, Green-Wood is proud to host monthly gatherings of the Death Café here in our beautiful\, modern chapel. Amy Cunningham\, death educator and creator of the Brooklyn-based blog TheInspiredFuneral.com\, invites participants to share their thoughts and feelings on death. It’s an opportunity for safe and open exchanges\, without an agenda. Coffee and light snacks are provided. \n \n“A place for people to discuss our inevitable fate” – Gothamist \n \nFree to attend\, RSVP recommended. Please register using the Eventbrite box below. \n \nThis program takes place in our Modern Chapel just to the right after passing through the Gothic Arches at the main entrance. All events will take place rain or shine. Click here for our inclement weather policy. \n \nMobile users: Please tap here for free registration.\n

SUMMARY:Pouring Green-Wood
DESCRIPTION: \nWhen Joy Doumis and Jeremy Hammond approached Green-Wood in fall 2015 to ask if they could harvest the apples here\, of course we had to know why. To make hard cider of course! Spread across 478 acres\, our urban orchard has over 150 Malus (aka apple) trees! Using giant tarps to gather apples varieties that include Baldwin\, Granny Smith\, various crab apples\, and a yet-to-be-identified apple variety\, they set about turning their harvest into a delicious fermentation of homemade hard cider. In keeping with the sustainable farming movement and a love for all things Green-Wood\, join Joy and Jeremy for the story of how they produced over 100 bottles of hard cider (which they call Proper Cider) in their own back yard literally. Naturally\, a tasting of the final product is included. \n \n$25 for members of Green-Wood and BHS / $30 for nonmembers. \n \nThis program takes place in our Modern Chapel just to the right after passing through the Gothic Arches at the main entrance. SUMMARY:(Sold Out) The Victorian Cult of Mourning
DESCRIPTION:This event is sold out. Make sure you never miss out on tickets again! Green-Wood members get access to tickets weeks before the general public. Join today. \nBecome an Expert in the Fascinating Arts\, Crafts\, and Culture of Victorian Mourning \n \nNo one knew how to grieve like the Victorians. The elaborate and often downright weird rituals of the era – inspired by Queen Victoria who publicly mourned her husband’s death for forty years – provide a fascinating look at a culture for whom death was ever present. In the United States\, losses from the Civil War eclipsed 600\,000 deaths\, or two percent of the entire population. Death was everywhere. Mourning was an art form. Widows dressed in black from head to toe for an entire year. Household mirrors were covered and clocks were stopped when a death occurred. Women created and wore intricate jewelry made from the hair of the deceased. And rural cemeteries were established across America. Green-Wood is one such example\, which by the 1860’s drew over 500\,000 visitors a year who came to see the cemetery’s collection of ornate monuments and mausoleums. \nJoin us for an afternoon symposium devoted to exploring the arts and culture of Victorian mourning with illustrated talks and show-and-tell presentations of period artifacts. Speakers will include Dr. Stanley Burns\, M.D.\, founder of the Burns Archive of photographic history and professor of medicine and psychiatry at NYU Langone Medical Center\, Green-Wood Historian Jeff Richman\, Evan Michelson\, co-owner of Obscura Antiques & Oddities and host of the Science Channel’s Oddities\, funeral director Amy Cunningham\, Jessica Glasscock\, Research Associate for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s “Death Becomes Her” Exhibition\, and more! \nThis symposium is organized in partnership with Joanna Ebenstein\, co-founder of the former Museum of Morbid Anatomy and Laetitia Barbier\, former librarian of the Museum. \n \nSCHEDULE \n12:00-12:30: Introductions by Harry Weil\, Manager of Programs at Green-Wood Cemetery and Joanna Ebenstein and Laetitia Barbier of the recently shuttered Morbid Anatomy Museum \n12:30-1:10: An Illustrated History of Green-Wood Cemetery with Jeff Richman\, Historian of Green-Wood Cemetery \n1:10-2:00: Victorian Hair Jewelry and Artifact Art Show and Tell with Evan Michelson of Obscura Antiques and TV’s Oddities and master jeweler and hair artist Karen Bachmann \nLunch Break \n3:00-3:30: Mourning at the Museum: An overview of the recent exhibition Death Becomes Her\, focusing on the evolution of mourning attire from 1815 to 1915\, with Jessica Glasscock\, Research Associate at The Costume Institute at The Metropolitan Museum of Art \n3:30-4:30: Dr. Stanley B. Burns\, Founder of The Burns Archive and author of “Sleeping Beauty\,” in conversation with Joanna Ebenstein\, founder of Morbid Anatomy \n4:30-5:00: Dramatic readings of 19th century condolence letters overseen by Funeral Director Amy Cunningham \n5:00-7:00 Thematic music and refreshments provided by Friese Undine \n \n$20 for members of Green-Wood and BHS / $25 for nonmembers \nClick here for our inclement weather policy.

SUMMARY:(Sold Out) A Night of Victorian Tragedies
DESCRIPTION:This event is sold out. Make sure you never miss out on tickets again! Green-Wood members get access to tickets weeks before the general public. Join today. \nThe Victorians knew a thing or two about tragedy. They seemed to almost revel in tales of disaster and heartbreak. And a Victorian-era cemetery\, like Green-Wood\, has no dearth of these sad\, sad stories. Greg Young\, co-host of the award-winning NYC history podcast\, The Bowery Boys\, emcees a night of storytelling\, where you and your fellow audience members will vote on the most tragic of Victorian tales. \nHe will be joined by a team of seasoned storytellers who will try to convince you that their own heartbreaking tale of a Green-Wood permanent resident is worthy of the title. Will it be the victims of a shipwreck just 300 yards from port or the beautiful Charlotte Canda thrown from her horse-drawn carriage on the night of her 17th birthday? A bit Victorian-era trivia is also on deck\, along with some great Green-Wood prizes for the most knowledgeable (or lucky). Be sure to bring tissues. Fainting couches not provided. \n$20 for members of Green-Wood and BHS / $25 for nonmembers \nAll events will take place rain or shine. Click here for our inclement weather policy.

SUMMARY:Death and Dharma
DESCRIPTION:What can we learn from Buddhist teachings about our own lives on earth? How might we understand the impermanence of life within the expanding universe? In what ways might death inform our relationships with strangers\, loved ones\, and our own selves? These questions are the inspiration for a new series of lectures and meditations presented by the Brooklyn Zen Center (BZC) and Green-Wood that explore the complexities of death\, dying\, and the hereafter. \nLed by teachers from the BZC\, each session will begin with an insightful discussion that highlights Buddhist teachings on life and death. Afterward\, just around sunset\, attendees will gather for meditation within the cemetery’s tranquil and historic landscape. Whether you’re a practicing Buddhist or just someone looking to gain a little peace of mind\, each session will offer thoughtful opportunities for reflection in the company of fellow seekers. \nIf you are unable to sit on the ground\, you are strongly encouraged to bring a folding chair or cushion. Every effort will be made to choose a meditation site that is accessible for those with mobility issues. \nTicket prices are on a sliding scale basis to allow participants to pay according to individual means. Please note: Tickets are not available on Green-Wood’s website. To purchase tickets and for more information on cost\, visit Brooklyn Zen Center’s website.

SUMMARY:A Night of Blues\, Folk and Rock in Support of Green-Wood
DESCRIPTION:Join us on the night the Green-Wood Chapel becomes a House of Blues! We are enormously proud and excited to present an evening of folk\, blues\, and rock music with the powerhouse duo of singer-guitarists Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams. Three time Grammy Award-winning Larry Campbell – best known for his eight years with Bob Dylan – has played with Elvis Costello\, Willie Nelson\, and Levon Helm’s Midnight Rambles\, to name just a few. And Teresa\, who met Larry when she was playing at the Bottom Line in the ‘80s\, has sung with giants like Mavis Staples and Emmylou Harris. That’s why this performance by “the first couple of Americana” (Mojo Magazine) at Green-Wood\, a National Historic Landmark\, is a perfect marriage. \nOpening for Larry and Teresa will be the renowned guitarist Danny Kalb\, one of Dylan’s earliest inspirations and founding member of the legendary Blues Project. \nThis special performance is a tribute to Green-Wood permanent resident singer-songwriter Greg Trooper (1956-2017). \nIf you’ve never experienced music in Green-Wood’s historic chapel\, you are in for a huge treat. For one of the most memorable experiences of the year\, join us for this very special evening. Ticket sales support the tours\, programs\, school programs\, archives\, horticulture projects\, and conservation work at Green-Wood. \n\nMobile users: Please tap here to buy tickets.

SUMMARY:Striking Likenesses
DESCRIPTION: \n \n \nWhen Green-Wood Cemetery opened in the early 19th century\, the art of posthumous portraiture was immensely popular. As a form of commemoration\, these portraits of recently deceased loved ones were prized for the precious bond they created between the land of the living and the realm of the dead. This walking tour explores the stone and bronze images commissioned to immortalize the dearly departed\, many of which were created by leading artists of the day\, including sculptors Daniel Chester French\, John Quincy Ward\, and Charles Calverley\, among others. \n \nAllison Meier\, a staff writer for Hyperallergic\, who specializes in the visual culture of overlooked history\, will unravel how the Victorian age’s obsession with images of the dead was also found in painted portraits and postmortem daguerreotypes. \n \n$20 for members of Green-Wood and BHS / $25 for nonmembers \n \nAll events will take place rain or shine. The afternoon kicks off with a trolley tour of the cemetery’s “permanent residents” with whiskey connections\, including the one and only casualty of the Brooklyn Whiskey Wars of the late 1860s and early 1870s. Afterward\, the trolley will head to Kings County Distillery in the Brooklyn Navy Yard where visitors will see first-hand how whiskey is made and enjoy a tasting of four delectable varieties. \n \nThis tour is based upon the newly published book “Dead Distillers: A History of the Upstarts and Outlaws who Made American Spirits” by Colin Spoelman\, co-founder and Master Distiller at Kings County Distillery. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the distillery. \n \nYou must be 21 or older to participate in this tour; I.D. required. \n \n$35 for members of Green-Wood and BHS / $40 for non-members \n \nGreen-Wood trolley tours are fully accessible and ADA compliant. In order to accommodate a wheelchair or other mobility device on the trolley\, advance arrangements must be made. Please call (718) 210-3080\, ext. 1. Please note that portions of the tour take place outside the trolley and may require exiting the vehicle on multiple occasions.

SUMMARY:(Sold Out) A Night at Niblo’s Garden
DESCRIPTION:Credit: Maike Schulz\nThis event is sold out. Make sure you never miss out on tickets again! Green-Wood members get access to tickets weeks before the general public. Join today. \nThis popular event is back for 2017 and better than ever! Niblo’s Garden was once one of New York City’s largest and most elaborate theaters (at Prince and Broadway in SoHo) replete with sparkling lanterns\, fountains\, a festive open-air restaurant and bar\, and featuring the top musicians\, dancers\, and entertainers of the time. Owner and impresario\, William Niblo\, an eccentric himself\, was known to invite friends to the site of his elaborate mausoleum at Green-Wood\, built for his dearly departed wife\, turning the lakeside burial plot into a pleasure garden of its own. He was said to have visited the mausoleum on a daily basis\, bringing friends\, picnicking and even stocking the nearby pond with goldfish. \nEnjoy a Victorian extravaganza of performing arts put on by our good friends at Bindlestiff Family Cirkus\, a vaudeville and arts powerhouse since 1995. Your night will begin with a picnic (bring your own) around the beautiful pond Crescent Water and will unfold into an evening of showmanship in front of Niblo’s grand mausoleum. As always\, author and Niblo expert Ben Feldman will hold court as Niblo himself. Bring a blanket\, snacks\, and drinks\, and prepare to be dazzled by 19th-century games\, fire eaters\, contortionists\, and much more – all lit by candles and a starry sky. \n$35 for members of Green-Wood and BHS / $40 for non-members. \nClick here for our inclement weather policy. \n
