SUMMARY:(Sold Out) Common Shade: Death\, Dying\, and Buddhist Insights
DESCRIPTION:Credit: Steven Acres\nThis event is sold out. Make sure you never miss out on tickets again! Green-Wood members get access to tickets weeks before the general public. Join today. \n \nAlthough it may sound counterintuitive\, taking time to contemplate death often works to reduce anxiety and suffering and increase happiness. Meditation and Buddhist practice have always advocated for the daily reflection on death: its inevitability and unpredictability. Confronting death helps us to overcome our fear and to develop an acceptance of death as a natural part of life. It serves to remind us of the preciousness of our time\, and helps lessen the surprise and anguish when loved ones pass away. Discuss the how’s and why’s behind the practice with Bhante Suddhāso\, a Western Buddhist monk and co-founder of Buddhist Insights\, an organization connecting laypeople to monastics in both secular and non-secular spaces. He’ll lead a guided meditation in Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel before answering questions from Common Shade host Evan Michelson and you. \n \nMorbid Anatomy Museum and Green-Wood present Common Shade – a dialogue existing on the borderlands between the living and the dead. Hosted in Green-Wood’s intimate Historic Chapel\, Common Shade will cultivate a social space for death – a place to examine death’s prevalence in our lives\, and its shifting place in history\, art\, culture\, and society. Drawing from Green-Wood’s bucolic setting and using history as our anchor\, each night’s presentations will include dialogue and interviews with guests. Together with artists\, practitioners\, scholars\, and peers\, Common Shade discussions will explore our humble acknowledgments of and engagements with death. \n \n$20 for members of Green-Wood\, Morbid Anatomy Museum and BHS/$25 for non-members. Drinks will be available for purchase during the event (free for Key Holder members with proof of membership). \n \nGreen-Wood trolley tours are fully accessible and ADA compliant. Historic Green-Wood structures\, like the Historic Chapel\, may not be fully accessible for some individuals. Please call (718) 210-3080\, ext. 1 for more information. \n \nClick here for our inclement weather policy.

DESCRIPTION:Courtesy of PBDW Architects. Photographer Jonathan Wallen.\nThis event is sold out. Make sure you never miss out on tickets again! Green-Wood members get access to tickets weeks before the general public. Join today. \nWhat is cremation? How long have we been doing it\, and how does it work? Is it the right choice for you or your family? Amy Cunningham leads this tour of cremation’s history and its impact on the present and future of funerals. In Green-Wood’s Modern Chapel\, you’ll learn about the earliest known cremation in Australia 32 thousand years ago\, the pagan cremations in ancient Rome\, and how Judaism’s consistent objection to cremation led to 1\,500 years of Christian burial. Mark Twain\, Walt Whitman\, Madame Helena Blavatsky\, Jessica Mitford\, Ann Landers and Reverend Billy Graham will all make appearances in this engaging\, sometimes jolly talk. You’ll also learn how to choose an end-of-life mode of disposition that expresses your own beliefs and values. Space is very limited; reservations required. \nAll events will take place rain or shine. Click here for our inclement weather policy.

SUMMARY:(Sold Out) A Night at Niblo’s Garden
DESCRIPTION: \nThis event is sold out. Make sure you never miss out on tickets again! Green-Wood members get access to tickets weeks before the general public. Join today. \nThis popular event is back for 2016 and better than ever! Imagine an outdoor pleasure dome\, strung with lights\, adorned with fountains and featuring the top musicians\, dancers and entertainers of the time. That was the scene at Niblo’s Garden – the premier entertainment house of the 19th century. Niblo himself had a habit of turning his Green-Wood mausoleum – built years before his death – into a pleasure garden of its own\, with friends\, picnics\, and entertainment. Rumor has it he even stocked the nearby Crescent Water with goldfish. \nNow we’re transforming Niblo’s final resting place into a Victorian extravaganza of performing arts\, with help from Bindlestiff Family Cirkus\, a vaudeville and arts powerhouse since 1995. Your night will begin with a picnic (bring your own) around the beautiful pond Crescent Water\, and will unfold into an evening of showmanship in front of Niblo’s grand mausoleum. As always\, author and Niblo expert Ben Feldman will hold court as Niblo himself. Bring a blanket\, snacks\, and drinks\, and prepare to be dazzled by 19th-century games\, fire eaters\, contortionists\, and much more – all lit by candles and a starry sky. \n$32 for members of Green-Wood and BHS/$37 for non-members. \nAll events will take place rain or shine. Click here for our inclement weather policy.
