SUMMARY:2:30 p.m. Green-Wood's Annual Memorial Day Concert
DESCRIPTION:This year Green-Wood celebrates 15 years of bringing Memorial Day music to visitors from all over the area. The concert features the ISO Symphonic Band\, founded in 1995 to sponsor talented students throughout New York City and led by ISO’s inimitable founder and conductor Brian P. Worsdale. Each year we feature the works of Green-Wood’s permanent residents Fred Ebb\, Louis Moreau Gottschalk\, Leonard Bernstein\, and many others. \nBring a blanket and enjoy this early summer performance. Food and refreshments will be on sale all day. Directly after the concert\, enjoy a special trolley tour with Green-Wood Historian Jeff Richman. Click here for more information on the tour\, and reserve your spot now – that tour fills up quickly! \nThe concert is a free event\, but please register your group using the Ticket Information box below so that we can gauge response. We encourage you to consider making an optional donation with your reservation\, to ensure our ability to continue to offer these events free of charge. \n\nPlease note that a free reservation for the Memorial Day concert does not ensure a spot on the trolley tour. SUMMARY:4 p.m. The Spoon River Project
DESCRIPTION:“In the center of Brooklyn’s vast Green-Wood cemetery\, actors are bringing characters to life in the moonlight.” – WNYC \nPhoto by F. SUMMARY:Let's Do Right By Jim!
DESCRIPTION:The Creighton Monument\, as it appeared in the 19th century.\nGreen-Wood Cemetery and SABR-NYC Invite You on a One-Time Only Private TourTo See Early Baseball Graves and Rare Baseball Items from Green-Wood’s ArchivesTo Help Raise Money to Restore the Creighton Monument\nHis death at 21 shocked the baseball world. He never signed a contract. He is not a member of the baseball Hall of Fame. But in the early 1860s Jim Creighton revolutionized the game of baseball. He threw the first fastball\, making the pitcher a weapon and transforming the game itself from a hitting contest into today’s sublime battle for control of the strike zone. His baseball-themed grave monument was\, from its earliest days– and is – a place of pilgrimage for ballplayers and lovers of the game. \nToday\, Jim needs us. Over the years\, the marble pedestal and “lemon peel” baseball that once crowned Creighton’s grave have disappeared. Green-Wood Cemetery has established a fund to recarve this missing piece and restore this monument to its original state. To date\, enough money has been raised that we are optimistic that with a little help from SABR-NYC and friends\, we can reach our goal of completing the work – and inviting donors back for the unveiling — in 2014. \n \nA sketch of the Creighton monument restoration. The original top of the Creighton Monument.\nAt Jim Creighton’s grave for the commemoration of the 150th anniversary of his death in 2012.\n \nOn October 18\, 2013\, exactly a century and a year after Jim Creighton’s death\, Green-Wood will offer a unique tour for SABR members and their friends. Green-Wood historian Jeff Richman and author Tom Gilbert will lead a tour of the graves of Creighton\, Henry Chadwick\, James Whyte Davis\, Charles Ebbets and other early baseball heroes. They will give graveside talks on topics such as the Mystery of Jim Creighton’s Demise\, Baseball’s Baffling Paternity Case\, and What Happened at Charles Ebbets’ Funeral That May Have Doomed the Brooklyn Dodgers. Guests will also be treated to a rare look into Green-Wood’s archives\, including a great Brookyn Dodger letterhead\, with a note signed by Charles Ebbets\, and a note signed by President Theodore Roosevelt\, who dubbed Henry Chadwick “The Father of Baseball\,” as well as other signatures of early baseball greats. \nThe tour is limited to 60 participants (Warning: this event is expected to sell out quickly). Guests will ride in comfort in Green-Wood’s trolley. The tour will take place at 5:00 p.m. on Friday\, October 18th\, 2013. Along with a bit of baseball time travel\, guests will enjoy stunning fall foliage\, breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline\, and the sunset over New York Harbor. Afterwards\, please join us for – what else? — beer and hotdogs (the inventor of the hot dog is at Green-Wood!) in Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel. \nTickets to the tour are $125\, of which all but $25 is tax-deductible. Additional contributions are gratefully accepted. Please use the following box to donate to theJim Creighton Monument Restoration Fund and to reserve your place for the tour:

SUMMARY:1 p.m. The Fearless Mrs. Goodwin – The First Female Detective in America Talk and Tour
DESCRIPTION: \n \nIt was the crime of the young century: a brutal bank heist committed in broad daylight on the streets of Manhattan. The police couldn’t solve the case—until they turned\, reluctantly\, to a woman. And so begins the amazing story of Isabella Goodwin – the NYPD’s (and the country’s!) first female detective. \nJoin author Elizabeth Mitchell as she tells the fascinating tale of Green-Wood resident Isabella Goodwin\, a remarkable woman who broke gender barriers in one of the toughest arenas in the city. After hearing all about Ms. Goodwin and her feats\, we’ll head out to Green-Wood on the trolley to visit her resting place\, plus those of other women worthy of celebration. \n \nThis event has two parts with limited seating\, the free talk in the Green-Wood Chapel and the (now sold out) guided trolley tour. Talk tickets are still available below. \n \n(Inclement Weather Policy) \n \n \n \n \n\nNot a Member?\nGet a free ticket with a membership at left and purchase additional Member Discount Tickets if desired.
