SUMMARY:Making an Exit: From the Magnificent to the Macabre
DESCRIPTION: \n \nAuthor and journalist Sarah Murray never gave much thought to what might happen to her remains – until her father died. While he’d always insisted his “organic matter” would have no significance\, he surprised the family by leaving detailed arrangements for the disposal of his ashes. His last request prompted Sarah to explore how – across centuries and cultures – humans have built memorials to their lives. Sarah will share stories\, photos\, and insights from her book Making an Exit: From the Magnificent to the Macabre – How We Dignify the Dead\, which documents her journeys across the world on a very personal quest: seeking inspiration for her own eventual send-off. \n \n “A fascinating travelogue\, but also a personal meditation on loss and fate. Ms. Murray excels in the role of intrepid tour guide.” – The Economist \n \n$10 for members of Green-Wood and BHS / $15 for non-members \n \nClick here for more Morbid Anatomy at Green-Wood events. \n \nClick here for our inclement weather policy. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nMobile users: Please tap here to buy tickets.\n \n\nNot a Member?\nClick here for all of our membership levels and information. \nAlready a Member?\nClick the “Enter promotional code here (members\, use your ID#)” link in the bottom right corner of the ticket box and enter your ID number to apply your ticket discount. SUMMARY:Birding in Peace
DESCRIPTION: \n \n \n \n \nBefore our gates open to the general public\, birding expert Rob Jett leads these peaceful Sunday morning walking tours to discover the birds that make Green-Wood their home – at least temporarily. By September\, offspring of these nesting birds will be on their own. Returning warblers will be in their less flamboyant fall plumage. Large numbers of blackbirds\, flycatchers\, sparrows\, vireos\, and swallows will also be passing through. By October\, waterfowl are returning\, and we’ll look for raptors heading south. November will bring back our overwintering feathered denizens from the north. \n \n$10 for members of Green-Wood and BHS / $15 for non-members \n \nFor this program you will check in at the Gothic Arches\, right at the main entrance. \n \nClick here for our inclement weather policy. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nMobile users: Please tap here to buy tickets.\n \n\nNot a Member?\nClick here for all of our membership levels and information. \nAlready a Member?\nClick the “Enter promotional code here (members\, use your ID#)” link in the bottom right corner of the ticket box and enter your ID number to apply your ticket discount. SUMMARY:Preserving Identity
DESCRIPTION:Credit: Sean Sime\nWhen a Grave is the Only Thing That Remains \n \nThis trolley tour will focus on the monuments of immigrants and underrepresented groups\, for whom written records\, newspaper clippings\, and obituaries are often nonexistent. And for whom\, the gravestone and cemetery records – an oft overlooked resource – are the only way to preserve their legacy. While all New Yorkers play in important role in the lives of their families and their communities\, some – especially in the nineteenth century – leave very few traces for posterity. \n \nThe “Freedom Lots\,” the graves of 1\,300 African Americans\, will be included in this tour\, as will many of the other single graves in Green-Wood’s public lots. The cemetery’s lot books and burial files will also be featured. \n \n$15 for members of Green-Wood and BHS / $20 for non-members \n \nThis program is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. \n \nGreen-Wood trolley tours are fully accessible and ADA compliant. SUMMARY:Death Café
DESCRIPTION:The Death Café is inspired by the centuries-old European salon (or café)\, an informal gathering to discuss philosophical\, political or scientific ideas. In 2011\, British entrepreneur Jon Underwood brought this concept to discussions of the most universal topic of all: death. Underwood’s intention was to provide an opportunity to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” Today\, there are over 4\,400 Death Cafes in 26 countries around the world. \nGreen-Wood is proud to host monthly gatherings of the Death Café here in our beautiful\, modern chapel. Amy Cunningham\, death educator and creator of the Brooklyn-based blog TheInspiredFuneral.com\, invites participants to share their thoughts and feelings on death. It’s an opportunity for safe and open exchanges\, without an agenda. Tea and light snacks are provided. \n“A place for people to discuss our inevitable fate.” – Gothamist \n“It’s a reversal for American culture\, which for a long time has shied away from these conversations.” – Village Voice \n“[E]ncouraging people to talk about death more freely and naturally.” – Haaretz \nFree to attend\, RSVP recommended. Please register using the Eventbrite box below. \nThis program takes place in our Modern Chapel just to the right after passing through the Gothic Arches at the main entrance.
All events will take place rain or shine. Click here for our inclement weather policy. \n \nMobile users: Please tap here for free registration.\n
