SUMMARY:1 p.m. Private Screening of Basquiat Film: The Radiant Child
DESCRIPTION:The Radiant Child movie poster\nSaturday\, November 5\, 2011\nQ&A WITH BASQUIAT FRIENDS WHO APPEAR IN FILM\, WINE & CHEESE RECEPTION\, AND A VISIT TO HIS GRAVE. \nSundance Film Festival: Grand Jury Prize nomination\nThe New York Times: Critics’ Pick \n“Davis focuses on fascinating specifics. Biographical minutiae which influenced his early work and articulate assessments from friends\, former girlfriends\, art historians\, and gallerists illuminate the life and work of the man who took\, in the words of Yale professor Robert Farris Thompson\, “all the street energies and translated them into high art.” – Melissa Anderson\, The Village Voice \n“Places Basquiat’s art in a cultural context with an enthusiasm and zest that make the many pictures shown come blazingly alive. His bitter contemplations of black history\, in particular\, have an epic\, historical dimension\, while also reflecting his own insecurity about being treated as an exotic\, token black star in a predominantly white art world.”\n– Stephen Holden\, The New York Times \nCentered on a rare interview that director and friend Tamra Davis shot with Jean-Michel Basquiat over 20 years ago\, this new documentary chronicles the meteoric rise and fall of the young artist. In the crime-ridden NYC of the late 1970s\, he covered the city with the graffiti tag “SAMO.” Twenty-five years old at the height of his career\, Basquiat painted canvases that sell today for more than a  million dollars. The film features interviews with Julian Schnabel\, Larry Gagosian\, Fab 5 Freddy\, Jeffrey Deitch and many more. Click play below to watch a trailer: \n \nFilm screening is followed by wine and cheese; Q&A with Suzanne Mallouk\, artist\, psychiatrist and Basquiat’s former girlfriend\, and Michael Harmon\, co-founder of Basquiat’s 1980s industrial noise band\, “Gray”; and a visit to Basquiat’s grave. \n$25 per person for Green-Wood Historic Fund members and $35 for non-members.
