SUMMARY:Grieving & Weaving: Maternal Moments

Gatto and artist Mary Pat Klein as they bring together creativity and contemplation with an evening of knitting and crocheting. \n\n\n\nFor the May meeting of Grieving & Weaving\, we’re focusing on the maternal figures that have impacted us. Registration required. \n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn-Person Event(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\nAll skill levels are welcome\, from beginners to experts! Feel free to bring your own yarn\, needles\, and hooks; some materials will be available on a first-come\, first-served basis. \n\n\n\nMary Pat Klein is a highly skilled and renowned yarn craftsperson. Her knit creations have graced television screens\, print ads\, and Broadway stages. Her works have been featured on The Today Show and Guiding Light\, as well as Broadway productions including Frozen\, A View From a Bridge\, Present Laughter\, and the stage adaptation of Mrs. Doubtfire\, for which she crafted the iconic blue sweater. Collaborating closely with Tony Award-winning costume designers\, Mary Pat has custom crafted blankets\, sweaters\, hats\, throw pillows\, and an array of unique items. \n\n\n\nFree. SUMMARY:Exit Strategy: Community Days
DESCRIPTION:Green-Wood’s artist in residence Adam Tendler invites you to contribute to his upcoming installation Exit Strategy (opening June 2024). Exit Strategy is a site specific installation in Green-Wood’s Fort Hamilton Gatehouse that interrogates the complex relationship between grief and personal identity\, creating an immersive environment that meditates on how we attach ourselves to memories and physical objects\, and the possibilities for letting them go. The installation will incorporate content contributed by members of the Green-Wood community\, like you.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: Free. \n\n\n\n\n\nIn-Person Event(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\nThere are few ways to participate: \n\n\n\n\nAt the Cemetery: Visit the artist’s studio in the Fort Hamilton Gatehouse on March 30th\, April 27th\, or May 11th between 11:00 am–3:00 pm where you may: (1) write a reflection about someone you have lost or where you are in your  life (think  journal entry) and/or (2) contribute a memento belonging to a departed loved one (We recommend an article of clothing).* \n\n\n\nFrom Anywhere: Send a recording or voice memo of yourself sharing about people you have lost and/or your current emotional state to the email address exitstrategy@green-wood.com.* \n\n\n\n\nThese community days are presented as part of Green-Wood’s Death Education programming\, through which we aim to grow closer to death\, dying\, grief\, and loss in healthy and community-driven ways. As music is our universal language\, death is one of the great universal truths; we will come together to sit with both of them as we process our individual grief and participate in honoring our collective grief.  \n\n\n\n* All submitted materials will be incorporated into the artist’s work either visually or sonically\, and the final piece will open to the public in June. All submissions will be kept anonymous\, are final\, and cannot be returned. Materials will be destroyed or removed\, along with the artist’s work\, in a public ceremony that culminates the exhibit.  \n\n\n\nThe Fort Hamilton Gatehouse is located just inside Green-Wood’s Fort Hamilton Parkway Entrance (Fort Hamilton Parkway and Micieli Place). It is an approximately 10 minute walk from the Fort Hamilton F and G Train Station.

SUMMARY:Mortality & Me: Green-Wood’s Book Club
DESCRIPTION:It’s often difficult to engage in conversations about death: Will I say the wrong thing? Am I going to offend someone? Who wants to talk about that morbid stuff anyway? Green-Wood’s book club\, Mortality & Me\, will help make death an easier subject to talk about through compelling books that tackle this topic head on. \n\n\n\nFor this book club session\, we will be discussing Alua Arthur’s Briefly Perfectly Human: Making an Authentic Life by Getting Real About the End\, a deeply transformative memoir that reframes how we think about death. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: Free. Registration required. \n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn-Person Event(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\nA lawyer-turned-death-doula\, Arthur has shared her philosophy throughout the spheres of education\, film\, media—and now literature—that thinking about your own death can lead to a more fulfilling and authentic life. Her book is a powerful testament to getting in touch with something deeper by embracing the fact of our own mortality.  \n\n\n\nYou do not have to have read the book in its entirety to enjoy the event. A portion will be sent to attendees in PDF form\, via email in advance. This section will be the basis of our discussion. \n\n\n\nMortality & Me’s moderator\, Josie Wells\, is the creator and facilitator of Footnotes & Indexes Book Club whose mission is to connect people to literature that feeds their curiosity and articulates their lived experiences as a form of community activism. She holds degrees in African American Studies and English from Rutgers University and is an award-winning journalist. \n\n\n\nFree. Registration required.
