SUMMARY:Finding Peace\, One Piece at a Time: Managing Possessions
DESCRIPTION:Credit: Sheila Sund via Flickr\n\n\n\n\n\nOur personal possessions tell the stories of our lives. Each item nods to who we are and how we might be remembered. They may recall an event from childhood\, a well-earned accomplishment\, a treasured relationship\, generations that came before us. \n\n\n\nWhen we’re faced with downsizing our own personal belongings or sorting through a loved one’s possessions\, we’re confronted with a challenge. How do we decide what to keep\, what to share\, and what to donate? How can we “break up” a lifetime of valued belongings? It’s an overwhelming process\, but it can also be very rewarding. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: Free. Registration required. \n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVirtual EventA Zoom link will be in your confirmation email upon registration.\n\n\n\n\n\nRachel Kodanaz\, author of Finding Peace\, One Piece at a Time\, leads this workshop on how to manage your and your loved ones’ personal possessions. As a leading voice on the subject of sorting\, thinning\, and repurposing belongings\, she will engage in the how\, why\, and proven techniques of what to save\, what to share with others\, and what is best to get rid of. You will learn new approaches to organizing possessions\, develop skills to overcome perceived obstacles\, and build a timeline aligned to specific end goals. \n\n\n\nFree. Registration required. Please consider a donation to the Green-Wood Historic Fund so that we can continue to offer free and low-cost programs throughout the year. A Zoom link will be in your confirmation email upon registration.

SUMMARY:Show & Tale: Love Letters\, Lockets\, & Valentines
DESCRIPTION:Credit: Sheila Sund via Flickr\n\n\n\n\n\nAt this Valentine’s Day themed Show & Tale\, we’re focusing on the items\, people\, and stories that remind us of that crazy-little-thing-called-love. We’ll also share some epic love stories from our own Green-Wood permanent residents\, like William Niblo\, who spent every day at his wife’s mausoleum following her death.  \n\n\n\nNo\, this is not the “show and tell” of your grammar school days. Show & Tale is more like Antiques Roadshow but with storytelling\, or a Death Cafe turned Pinterest board. Everyone is welcome to join in—just bring an object of your choosing and share your story about loss. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: Free. Registration required. \n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVirtual EventA Zoom link will be in your confirmation email upon registration.\n\n\n\n\n\nNo judges\, no prizes\, no pressure. And no need to practice! Just want to come and listen? Awesome\, observers are always welcome. Some inspiration for what to bring: love letters your grandpa sent grandma during the war\, a gift from your first relationship that holds fond memories\, a locket with your favorite picture inside\, or any photos\, letters\, books\, or other items you associate with love. \n\n\n\nShow & Tale is facilitated by Martie McNabb\, a personal historian/visual artist who tells stories with people’s photos\, documents\, and other memorabilia. She’s the founder of Memories Out of the Box ® LLC & Thingtide Show & Tale ® LLC. She’s an interactive story-sharer who helps people create connections by holding space for them to share the stories of the things that matter.  \n\n\n\nFree. Registration required. Her talks on wildlife demand have been widely presented\, including at the Turtle Survival Alliance Symposium\, Jane Goodall Institute Nepal\, and Explorer’s Club\, among others. SUMMARY:Death Cafe
DESCRIPTION:The Death Cafe is a simple concept. Bring strangers together to discuss one of the great universal truths: death. With thousands of chapters in over 25 countries around the world\, Death Cafes are informal gatherings that aim to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” There is no set agenda\, but small group conversations might include thoughts on burial and cremation versus water cremation and natural organic reduction\, what music you want played at your funeral\, the way death is depicted in literature and film\, or a personal experience you had dealing with grief. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: Free. Registration required. \n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn-Person Event(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\nTaking place in the Cemetery’s Modern Chapel\, Gabrielle Gatto\, Green-Wood’s coordinator of public programs and a death doula who holds a certificate in thanatology\, invites you to share their thoughts\, anxieties\, hopes\, and questions about death. It’s an opportunity for safe and open exchanges—along with tea and pastries!  \n\n\n\nIn remembrance of the 22nd anniversary of 9/11\, we will reserve space in this meeting to reflect on the particular branch of grief that finds its roots in tragedy. Green-Wood is the final resting place of many victims of 9/11; we will honor them with a reflection at the beginning of the program. \n\n\n\nFree. Registration required. Please consider a donation to the Green-Wood Historic Fund so that we can continue to offer free and low-cost programs throughout the year. \n\n\n\nBEFORE RESERVING YOUR SPOT\, PLEASE NOTE:\n\n\n\n\nAttendees must follow ALL instructions and guidance from Cemetery staff and ambassadors.\n\n\n\nTickets: There is no need to print tickets. Attendees will be checked in by name.\n\n\n\nWhere to go: Contactless check-in will take place at the Modern Chapel near the Main Entrance at Fifth Avenue and 25th Street (500 25th Street).

SUMMARY:The Joy of Funerals—20 Years Later: A Book Talk and Signing With Alix Strauss
DESCRIPTION:Described by the Los Angeles Times as “part ‘Six Feet Under\,’ part ‘Sex and the City\,’” The Joy Of Funerals by Alix Strauss has become a cult classic since its publication in 2003. Now\, twenty years later\, on the occasion of the novel’s rerelease\, Strauss joins us at Green-Wood for a reading\, discussion\, Q&A\, and book signing.  Books will be available for purchase. \n\n\n\nThe Joy of Funerals is a collection of stories that explores the lives of nine young women\, each willing to take drastic measures to fill the voids created by longing and loneliness. The stories are anchored around the character of Nina\, a lonely\, single thirty-something woman who attends funerals in the hope of connecting with others. \n\n\n\nWritten with raw wit\, mordant humor\, and a uniquely penetrating voice\, Strauss turns the spotlight on the unattractive subjects of loss\, grief\, and loneliness. The Joy of Funerals is a smart\, vivid and arresting look into the inner world of those left behind\, and those still holding on. \n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: Free\, registration required \n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn-Person Event(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\nAlix Strauss is a trend\, culture\, and lifestyle journalist; an award-winning\, four-time published author; and a speaker.
