She’ll share the various restorative techniques she uses and how she manages to achieve a natural appearance\, despite a variety of ways a person may die\, including “traumatic deaths.” We’ll take a look at up-close examples of Amanda’s work and afterwards\, we’ll have an engaging Q & A session—so bring your curiosity and questions! \n\n\n\nAmanda Marie Eilis King\, CFSP\, is a licensed embalmer and funeral director with extensive training in postmortem reconstructive work. Hernández will share about the role of grief in her creative practice and guide participants to create a work of their own. The evening begins with Brianna discussing ways that art can be an engaging tool for understanding and coming to terms with the inevitable. After\, participants will reflect on their own experience with loss by creating memorial artworks through guided prompts\, and support from Hernández. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: Free. Not artistically inclined or you just don’t consider yourself creative? Don’t worry! This workshop is about the process\, not the final product. Supplies (paint and canvas) will be provided\, but you are encouraged to bring your own sketchbooks\, clay\, etc. \n\n\n\nBrianna L. Hernández is a Chicana artist\, curator\, educator\, and death doula guided by socially engaged practices. In developing as an artist Hernández credits her late mother\, Sylvia D. Hernández\, as her most significant mentor. In the studio\, Hernández focuses on end-of-life care\, grieving processes\, and mourning rituals based on lived experience\, cultural research\, and collaborations with peers. As a curator\, she works with artists to make socially-charged topics publicly accessible in order to create opportunities for education and empathy. Hernández proudly serves as Director of Curation and Board Secretary of Ma’s House & BIPOC Art Studio on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation\, and as Assistant Curator at the Parrish Art Museum. \n\n\n\nFree. DESCRIPTION:NAMING THE LOST Memorials (NTLM) is a small team of artists\, activists\, and folklorists that has been curating memorial sites in New York City to name and remember victims of the COVID-19 pandemic since May 2020. \n\n\n\nFrom May 3–May 29\, 2023\, in partnership with City Lore and with a grant from the Mellon Foundation\, NTLM presents THE MANY LOSSES FROM COVID-19\, a community public art memorial. Created with help from twenty New York City community partners\, the memorial will be on view along the fence at Green-Wood’s Main Entrance at 25th Street and Fifth Avenue in Brooklyn. Before the ceremony begins there will be opportunities to write poems and make name plates to add to the memorial. The ceremony will bring together the NTLM team\, community partners and the public for a dedication and activation of the memorial that will include a procession from the Main Entrance Arch to the Chapel; drummers representing the five city boroughs; a libation; folk singers from Jewish\, African\, African American and Garifuna traditions; and a participatory ritual of remembrance and naming the losses New Yorkers have suffered over the past three years. We welcome all to join us in commemorating those who have fallen to COVID-19 and remember them together. \n\n\n\nThe ceremony will also be livestreamed on City Lore’s Facebook page\, 7pm-8:30pm. But how can we respond—physically\, emotionally\, or even artistically? \n\n\n\nFor photographer Julianne Nash\, it’s through her camera that she expresses her grief over this loss\, trauma\, and environmental collapse. Her work focuses on the excruciatingly slow pace of climate collapse through a geological time scale (what is often called Ennuipocalypse or Slowpocalypse). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: Free.
