Schedule of Tours 2008

All tours meet at the Landmark Gothic Archway inside the 5th Avenue & 25th Street Entrance unless otherwise noted.

All Historic Fund tours listed in Bold are led by Jeff Richman, Green-Wood Cemetery's Historian. These tours are $10 per person ($5 for Historic Fund members), unless otherwise indicated, and will last approximately 2 1/2 hours. Some walking up and down hills is involved. Tours will be cancelled in the event of inclement weather. Contact Jeff Richman at 631-549-4891 if in doubt.

  1:00 PM - Book signing: Brooklyn's Green-Wood Cemetery: New York's Buried Treasure, second edition, by Jeffrey I. Richman. The author, Green-Wood's own historian, will discuss what has changed on the grounds since 1998, when the first edition of this book came out. The book signing will be followed by a trolley tour, featuring the dramatic changes that have occurred at Green-Wood in the last ten years. The book signing in the Historic Chapel is free; the trolley tour is $20 per person; $10 for Historic Fund members.

  THE BATTLE OF BROOKLYN ANNUAL COMMEMORATION CEREMONIES. In memory of the brave patriots who fought for our country’s independence in this first battle after the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

  10:00 AM - The Battle of Brooklyn-232 Years Later-A Trolley Tour - Join Barnet Schecter, author of the widely-praised The Battle for New York: The City at the Heart of the American Revolution, and Green-Wood Cemetery Historian Jeff Richman, for a trolley tour of the Revolutionary War battlefield within the cemetery. The Battle of Brooklyn was the first and largest battle of the American Revolution, with General George Washington commanding the fledgling American army. The tour will include several patriot defensive positions, Battle Hill (formerly known as Mount Washington), the Delaware monument, and gravesites of Revolutionary War soldiers (including one who took part in the Boston Tea Party).   10:00 AM - FREE EVENT - Tribute to George Washington’s Irish Generals, The Bold Fenian Men/The Civil War, Irish Korean War Memorial, Matilda Tone, John Gallagher & Charles Higgins.
  12:30 PM - FREE EVENT - Revolutionary War Re-Enactors will relive a portion of the Battle of Brooklyn in Green-Wood’s Meadow and the surrounding area near Green- Wood’s main entrance.
  1:30 PM - FREE EVENT – The Green-Wood Historic Fund and United States Merchant Marine Academy sponsor the Annual Battle of Brooklyn Parade. Meet at the main gate for a parade to Battle Hill led by George M. Cohan’s own, The Regimental Band of the United States Merchant Marine Academy.
  2:00 PM - FREE EVENT – Battle of Brooklyn Commemorative Ceremony honoring the Patriots who fought the first battle of our new nation on this sacred ground 232 years ago.
   
September 7, 2008, Sunday
  1:00 PM - A Celebration of Leonard Bernstein's Birth - In honor of the 90th anniversary of Leonard Bernstein's birth, Nina Bernstein, one of his daughters, will present "Leonard Bernstein, Reaching for the Note," a movie of his life. A question and answer session will follow. This event is open to Green-Wood Historic Fund members only. It is free, but by reservation only. October 3, 2008, Friday Evening
  The first ever gala fundraiser for The Green-Wood Historic Fund, featuring the cast of "Angels and Accordions" Historic Chapel and grounds. Details to follow.
   
October 4, 2008, Saturday (rain date is Sunday, October 5)
  Angels and Accordions (a featured event of openhousenewyork) This site-specific performance of dance and music across historic Green-Wood Cemetery's picturesque acres of rolling green hills features its unparalleled collection of sculpture and monuments. This unique event, choreographed by Martha Bowers of Dance Theatre Etcetera, features original music composed by Guy Klucevsek and Bob Goldberg (played live by a band of accordionists), singing, and a visual installation designed by photographer Alex Heilner inside the Catacombs.   1:00 PM - Halloween at Green-Wood, Part 1 - A Walk - Celebrate the holiday with tales of murder, mayhem, spirits, and ghosts. This is a very, very popular tour, so arrive early. This special tour is $20; $10 for Historic Fund members. No reservations necessary.

  1:00 PM - Sculpture at Green-Wood Cemetery-A Trolley Tour - Join Dr. Karen Lemmey, formerly of The Metropolitan Museum and The Smithsonian Institution, and Jeff Richman, Green-Wood Cemetery Historian, for a new look at Green-Wood's great sculpture collection. Please call 718 768-7300 for reservations; space on the trolley is limited. The cost of the trolley ride is $20 per person; $10 for Historic Fund members.
   
December 7, 2008, Sunday
  1:00 PM - George Catlin's Painting of De Witt Clinton-A Talk - Join Dr. Joan Trocolli, senior scholar at the Denver Art Museum and one of the world's leading experts on Catlin, for a talk about her research on this very interesting painting in the Green-Wood Historic Fund's collection. A walk to Catlin's grave will follow the talk. Free admission: please call 718 768-7300 for reservations.

Photography of landscape and architectural designs for personal use is permitted. In an effort to protect the privacy of our lot owners, the use of movie cameras, video and live models is prohibited. Persons desiring to take photographs intended for publication or commercial use should send a written request to The Green-Wood Cemetery, 500 - 25th Street, Brooklyn, NY 11232.
