D.M. Bennett: The Truth Seeker

Join Roderick Bradford, author of D.M. Bennett: The Truth Seeker (2006) and a video of the same title, for a premiere showing of his one-hour tribute to Bennett (who is interred at Green-Wood Cemetery). DeRobigne Mortimer Bennett was a remarkable historical figure. A Shaker herbalist, then a leading freethinker of 19th-century America, Bennett steadfastly took on the forces of narrow-mindedness. In his weekly Truth Seeker, Bennett boldly advocated birth control and women’s rights while opposing dogmatic religion. Ultimately, Bennett went to prison rather than remain silent.

This event is free (suggested donation $5). Reservations are recommended. Reserve your ticket online today or call 718.768.7300.

After the book signing, join Jeff Richman, Green-Wood Cemetery historian, for a trolley tour featuring Bennett’s elaborate monument (to “The Defender of Liberty and Its Martyr”), paid for by his followers, and Green-Wood’s other most fascinating inscribed monuments: a gravestone with a Victorian poem to a pug dog (“Only a dog, do you say, sir critic . . .”), a gravestone attacking “intoxicating liquour and tobacco,” and much more.

The trolley tour is $20 / $10 for Historic Fund members
. Reservations are recommended. Space is limited. To make reservations for the trolley tour, click here>
