Cremation

A simple, clean and dignified process, cremation is more economical, space-efficient and environmentally friendly in comparison with traditional burial or entombment. Cremation has also become a very popular method of memorializing a loved one. The Cremation Association of America has reported an increase in cremations, up from 21 percent of deaths in 1996 to 33.5 percent in 2006. Cremation, the process of reducing human remains to bone fragments by heat and evaporation in preparation for memorialization, is accepted by many religions.

The Green-Wood Crematory Chapel and Columbarium is a full-service state-of-the-art facility, serving members of all faiths. Its columbariums offer a variety of contemporary and traditional niche styles for permanent retention of cremated bodies. Tranquility Garden columbarium, Green-Wood’s most recent addition for cremation memorialization, offers a full variety of indoor and outdoor niches in a dramatic, modern work of architecture surrounding a tranquil pond in which swim graceful koi and amidst serene planted landscapes of bamboo and flowering cherry trees.

Niches are also available in Green-Wood’s Hillside community mausoleums, including the fourth and final phase of the project, which is nestled in the slope of a hillside and houses two five-story blue waterfalls cascading from pyramidal skylights to create a stunningly unique memorial site. An urn garden and lawn niches are available for those who prefer ground burial for cremated bodies.
