As home to over 7,000 trees, Green-Wood’s collection of maples, oaks, beeches, and gingkoes is one of the best in New York City. But how can you possibly tell them apart? Arborist Bill Logan leads an intensive five hour workshop that begins with a close study of an array of twigs and leaves, and learning how to classify those using dichotomous keys.

Afterward, tour Green-Wood’s extensive grounds to practice ways of recognizing and distinguishing tree features. You’ll learn helpful tools in identification and easy-to-remember mnemonic aids. This workshop is an enjoyable way to spend a spring afternoon, and you’ll pick up factoids to impress friends on your next outdoor adventure! You are encouraged to bring lunch.

$45 for members of Green-Wood and BHS / $50 for nonmembers.

This program takes place in our Historic Chapel, a short walk from our Gothic Arches at the main entrance. Click here for our inclement weather policy.
